One of my favourite methods for making a melody sound a bit more interesting is to play around with chord progressions. Whenever I find myself using the same old familiar sequences, I'll play around and see if there is anything else that will work with my tune.
One of the masters of this technique is Neil Finn, from the band Crowded House. In this video I use two examples from him, as well as a much more modern song by Miley Cyrus, and also explain how I've put my money where my mouth is in my new song.
Songs I use as examples
Fall At your Feet (Written by Neil Finn)
Distant Sun (Written by Neil Finn)
Flowers (Written by Miley Cyrus, Gregory Aldae Hein, Michael Pollack)
Still Holding My Breath (Written by Phil Cooper)
