Sometimes there's a need to go Old School and that's what Fred is doing for a quarter panel repair on Sarah - n - Tuned 1974 Toyota Celica rest-o-mod. The panel had some severe dent damage that was repaired badly and was in need of the lost art of lead working for the initial step in correcting the previous repair. In this video Fred explains the steps and tools involved.

I watched my Dad repair his Austin Healey Sprite fender with lead in 1960 when I was 8 years old. By the time I got to high school everyone was using Bondo. I have always been fascinated by lead work, but I haven’t seen anyone use this technique in years. Thank you for bringing back memories of watching my Dad. The old guys knew how to repair things to last.

I am not advocating not to wear the protective clothing but less we never forget that Bill "the Leadslinger" Hines spent 70 years doing lead body work and his protection was just a large cigar and he lived until he was 94. Bill was a true master and his work was signed with a lead pocket for a pop up antenna. Anyone doing lead in 2023 is holding on to a legacy and keeping art alive. Well done.

@@mondop5270 what the hell are you talking about? I clearly said "I am not advocating not to wear PPE" Jesus Christ the keyboard warriors in any comment section. Since you brought up smoking, remember they cannot say smoking causes cancer, they can only say "in lab tests it shows..." Or something similar because just for the very reason you pointed out, some people smoked their entire lives and had no issues, my mother-in-law included, she smoked 3-5 packs a day and just turned 84. Maybe pick a better example next time, try asbestos

Very cool to see again. My Grandfather was a body man from the end of WWII until somewhere around 59 or so. He rebuilt Studebakers and several other brands at their shop. I remember one day my mom actually lost control of our 1963 Ford Falcon and put it into a guardrail and drug it a ways. I got to watch Grandpa weld in a couple big metal triangles and form them and then lead it in to where when he got done, you couldn't even see it after paint. A real artist. ;)

@@151Logan there are different options but if your really trying to restore something, the less filler, the better. I think that much body filler would have eventually cracked or shadowed. Just my opinion.

And yeah - Sarah's amazing - I hope she takes the Celica to the track to see what it can do - maybe put some track tires on it for the runs and save her daily drivers.

And lead is nice because IT WON'T RUST! 😁 I worked for a battery company & we had lead sticks for melting on a damage battery posts. (Surprised I'm still alive) we used NO protection.😮 U did a nice job on Sarah's car! 👍 Also sub'd!

It's not a dying art with people like you sharing it, the man that taught me can remember showing 12 or so how that he thinks got it, I managed to teach 3 before being disabled, and the man that taught my teacher, he was building lead sleds in the 50's. GREAT results for what Sarah wanted/needed out of that corner. Making that corner in new steel would be a pain time wise.

Lead wipe is such a difficult art. I tried to do it on my 1970's Holden HZ 1 ton Ute cab roof seam years ago and just kept melting it all off. I gave up after getting a boot full of hot lead and just bronze welded it with the Oxy. That buckled the roof, so I installed a sunroof 🤣

Ive worked with lead in solder form, and a lot of the principals are the same, but others are the complete opposite, like we mix in tin to make the solder have very little eutectic state(gelatinous) to maximize solder quality, and you dont mix in tin, because you need that gelatinous state to transfer material. We use lead in very small amounts compared to what you use, and we still have to be careful with it. It accumulates in your body, and wont ever go away.
