Technically, Sonic's max speed is actually way higher in Unleashed, Colors, Gens, Forces, and Frontiers, as Sonic's speed can actually be multiplied monumentally by simply doing the Quickstep. He moves to the left or right in near an instant WITHOUT losing any forward momentum, meaning that in that moment, he's moving diagonally at a SUBSTANTIALLY higher speed all together. Likely exceeding the speed of sound
@@FunFun-zq6pj there's a sonic boom effect every time he uses the boost, and if in theory every time he runs even in the classics it's just that for gameplay reasons he's slowed down a lot
Bro has the math skills to be an engineer but instead he's calculating Sonic's speed in every game And honestly this is the best form of entertainment for me so thank you
Small addition to your stairs explanation. Texturing is one way of doing it, another way is to use 2 seperate meshes. One for the stairs which has no collisions and the other being the slope mesh that is invisible and has the collisions. Both these methods are still used in modern game dev, we can use stuff like IKs to hide the fact that we are using slopes.
Fun fact: Sonic once stated that he only gets faster and stronger every second, which we can see here. Though it changes a lot, we can see his modern, older version is far faster than his younger version in most instances. That being said, we can assume that the more games that are released, Sonic will only speed up more and more, so maybe he actually will be faster than the speed of sound one day
He's already faster than time in lore. The only reason he's so slow here is for gameplay reasons. While using math to calculate speed is fun, if anybody tries to use it to calculate CANON speed it's just wrong
Funny that Sonic is protrayed to be incredibly fast but 225mph is the best speed, but consdering this is Sonic, the levels are probably from his perspective, so he would be going so much faster, and time just feels slower to him when he's running that fast (mainly in the boost games at least)
You weren't kidding about this video being light on math! You trimmed a lot of the fat with your explanations and I really enjoyed how the final result of that turned out c:
The game where Sonic is the 13th fastest? Sonic Forces: Speed Battle Sonic is actually around the 90th fastest (one of the slowest) characters in the game.
On a side note, I wonder how fast is Lilac from the _Freedom Planet_ series? According to the official GalaxyTrail server, her height in _Freedom Planet 2_ is estimated to be around 142 cm tall, and it's unknown if that height is also applicable to her appearance in _Freedom Planet 1._
You made a mistake by leaving out the Demakes because actually they are all completely different to the main games. In fact the only one that follows the same Structure as the main game is lost world 3ds, which is better than the main game anyways. both 2DS colours and 3DS generations are like the Sonic Rush Games. (However generations is just arbitrary splitting the move set between two characters.) The sonic unleashed Demake might look similar but it is a completely separate game, it doesn't even have the same mechanics and controls. TLDR : They are in no way similar to the main games. (Except for lost world) Hey! Still it's a great video! And to be honest I can't blame you for skipping out Java phone Unleashed. The Demakes would make a pretty good sequel later on, right?
Oh for sure! In all honesty it came down to the fact that I had done most of the games, then realized later that I had forgot to do the demakes of the games. I plan on doing a follow up to this video so I would def add in the rest of the games if I can
13:16 Another great location to test top speed in Shadow is GUN Fortress. Run along either the left or right walls far away from enemies and obstacles. It's through the first garage about 10 seconds into the level. You reach top speed very fast and will maintain it for about 5-6 whole seconds. ( Which is an absurdly long amount of time in Shadow, given how platform heavy it is. Makes speedrunning GUN fortress hella fun. )
When you did Unleashed did you take into account the first stretch of Chun Nan and the Egg Beetle fight? In those two instances the speed is higher than anywhere else in the game and the devs claimed that it was allegedly over 300mph to scale. Could have just been marketing though, idk 🤷
I did not, I should’ve looked into it more! I watched some gameplay and also just had sonic boost forward with max speed and assumed it was the fastest 🤷♂️
@@llennoxyt well it was a great video and I think it's good to get a measure of how he travels for the majority of the game moreso than just a couple odd moments anyway but I thought you might find that neat! If you ever do a video showing how fast all of the vehicles go in Shadow the Hedgehog that would be pretty funny, they are mostly probably like 15mph 😅 Once again, awesome vid!
@@llennoxytno way you put his Mach speed part slower then Mach speed in 06 he in those moments would be 767 mph Sonic in generation make sonic booms when he boost putting him faster then sound In unleashed there is a speed meter this has a speed for the light speed dash and sonic was clocked moving 4 times faster then the light speed dash Now in lore sonic has irrelevant speed in generation he restarted time with just his speed Forces he has a infinite speed feat because he ran out of a infinite sized void
Sonic in Unleashes running at 225 Mph makes him faster than or about equal to some other known speedsters. There's 3 I can think of off the top of my head. 1. Dash (The Incredibles). Quick enough to run on water, but given his low weight and height of only 4 feet, that means 2 things. 1. He's a midget. 2. He would only need to run between 90 and 100 Mph to do it. 2. Turbo the Snail. Races against IndyCars and in his qualifying lap, he reaches 226 Mph, which, yes, is slightly faster, but keep in mind that Sonic is confirmed to be able to run at light speed, so you can't say Turbo is faster. 3. Lightning McQueen. His speed is very debatable. Pixar says that in Cars 1 and 2, he can reach 200 Mph, while in Cars 3, it's 198 Mph. Some argue he can reach 220 Mph in Cars 2 because he beats Francesco Bernoulli, who is also said to reach 220 Mph. Others have gone and calculated McQueen’s speed, and results vary. In Cars 1, someone calculated his speed to be 212.545 Mph, which makes sense. Jackson Storm breaks the lap speed record in Cars 3, reaching "an unprecedented 213 Mph." I calculated his speed in Cars 2 on the rainbow bridge, which is one massive straight, and I got 246.06 Mph. My explanation has been restrictor plates. Irl, restirctor plates slow NASCAR cars down by about 31 Mph. Their unrestricted top speed is 228 Mph, and when watching the 2014 Daytona 500, they wouldn't ever surpass 197 Mph, which is a 31 Mph difference. In Cars 3, Jackson Storm is shown to reach 214 Mph, but when a load of statistics come up on screen explaining Storm's records, one of them says, "Wind tunnel speed: 245 Mph" and 245 - 214 = 31. Now, tale McQueen’s original 212.545 + 31 = 243.545 Mph in Cars 2, but he got a couple of minor upgrades, so that increases to 246.06 Mph. In Cars 3, it is 198 Mph, but after his wreck, he is rebuilt and back to his rookie speed. To confirm this, I calculated his speed at Thomasville. He has one last race before departing to Florida. Thomasville Speedway is 0.625 miles long, and McQueen travels half thag distance in 5.31 seconds, which equals a speed of 0.0588512241 miles per second. Converting that to miles per hour gets you 211.86440676 Mph. None of this matters because, as I said, Sonic can reach beyond light speed, so he is the fastest fictional character ever.
I loved this video and this is my 2hd time watching and I have to confirm. I do want a part 2 with super, hyper, and any other forms like whisps elementel shields and stuff like that and maybe even rolling and drop dash speeds
The fact that sonic is going at less than 300 mph in the games makes me extremely curious on what a game would look like at sonics true speed (like at the speed of sound)
Classic sonic has been going well over the speed of sound. Cd sonic is moving faster than light to time-travel LOL. Modern sonic is around hundreds of thousands of times faster than light in cannon.
0:41 Didn't expect you to include these anyway, but no, they don't "follow a very similar structure of the standard definition or high-definition of their respective games." Luckily, Colors on DS and Generations on 3DS are closer to the Rush games than their console counterparts, so you already have those covered.

0:16 how fast he runs? Well well over light speed. Many statements abilities moving faster than his move called light speed dash.
Sonic fans when they realize that this video is measuring the ingame showing and not sonic's canon speed:

@marcxworld5708 i know that however in unleashed not only does he move at like 200 mph there are glitches to go even faster and the max he can go is about 9000 spd I can't member how much it was and the light speed dash being 390 spd so in that game technically it's about 9 times faster than light.
0:42 "since they already follow very similar structure to the standard definition or high definition version of their respective games" now i get why you might dismiss the 'demakes' like that, but while i could see that argument working for lost world 3ds or unwiished it's a disservice to gens 3ds (modern stages are 2D) and especially colors ds (quite literally a third rush game) the rest of this is cool!
I don't think the height difference should have been factored in, official bios and height charts state both versions of Sonic as being the same height. The gap only exists to hide the proportional difference between the two styles and to help differentiate them, but it's otherwise non-diegetic. This would also solve Sonic Pocket Adventure where it's pretty obvious that they changed to the Adventure designs last minute. They forgot to change Eggman's outfit in the Egg-Mobile and Tails's eyes in his sprites for piloting the Tornado. I'm also confused about the demake exclusions. I get excluding Lost World because of how similar the 3DS version was to the Wii U version, but Unleashed SD was very unique with how it handled Sonic's movement and Colors DS was a Rush game that I'm pretty sure deviated a lot more from Colors than Pocket Adventure did from Sonic 2
Honestly I just didn’t want to do them because if already spent hours on everything else. Also since the demakes share a story I figured it doesn’t make “sense” for sonic to be running slower during the events of the game just because I measured a different version of a game
Those charts are 30 years old. They have been objectively retconned by now because we have SEEN, WITH COMPARISON, how tall Sonic used to be versus how tall he is now. It isn't just an art style. It hasn't been for 13 years. Classic Sonic is younger Sonic. Period
For the people who think this is his actual speed, no, he's just the speed of the gameplay. Sonic has time traveled with his speed in Sonic CD, traveled across a infinite amount of space to his universe in minutes in the storybook games, restored time and space with his speed in Sonic generations, outran multiple black holes in Sonic Shuffle. His speed is nerfed during gameplay because his lore-accurate speed would break the game.
@konoheisenbergda This video isn't even about Sonic's canonical speed. Like I said, his Canon speed would break the game. Not even the mods that increase the speed of the gameplay is 1% of his speed 😭
@@konoheisenbergda Saying Sonic is subsonic fodder based off of the gameplay is like saying the characters in Sparking zero are subsonic fodder because we know many DBS characters are FTL+ but like I said, canon speeds would break the game. If this isn't a good example, I don't know what is.
I’d personally put Classic Sonic at around 2’4. The reason why is because Tails (Modern Tails) is noticeably taller than Classic Sonic in-game and is 2’7 himself, with Classic Tails being about 1’10, and Classic Sonic being 2’9 wouldn’t make sense as he would be a bit taller than Modern Tails. Great video tho, I will say that Sonic getting exponentially faster does fit in lore where he passively gets faster and stronger as he ages, with his base speed being the speed of sound and his fastest speed being way beyond light speed (he’s even mentioned light speed being easy for him in one game) so most games just have him run at a playable speed rather than have him blitz through stages like in “Sonic stages at Sonic’s real speed” videos lmao. One more thing. I think you should include more footage from games because at times it could be confusing as to how fast Sonic is in a certain game when you don’t show it lol. That being said, a video idea I have is “how high Tails flies/how fast he runs”, going along with the theme of how “x” a Sonic character is.
Honestly it's good you kept this to the games because Archie Sonic literally blows all these out of the water adn really doesn't make this kind of question fun. Edit for 11:36, Minor correction on stairs. There actually are modeled stairs, the collision model is a slope. There are games that use flat textured stairs to save space but you showed two examples where it isn't a texture, it is a physical model of stairs with a slope collision model. Great work though!
You're stupid That's the speed the game can show not his canon speed by that definition Archie is the slowest bc it is a bunch of still images Also the video doesn't account Speedruning in which is the maximum speed the game is beaten at The fastest is the advance games
Buddy, this isn't game sonic's actual speed.
@@datonebigguy I mean, sure but also more accurate Archie sonic is literally way more busted in speed feats. In some of the earlier outings he literally just ran outside of universes and uses interdimensional highways like it's nothing. That's Base form.
when will you do one of these with no restrictions (glitches/rolling allowed)? i'd love to see how unleashed m-speed compares to generations m-speed and so on
I predicted Unleashed would be fastest by a landslide, but the *way* I predicted it was wrong. idk if its some sort of Mandela effect but I could've sworn I've seen Unleashed footage with a Miles per Hour counter by the speed gauge, which would go super high to give you the feeling of you going super fast, also meaning it would be the only game that actually had a definitive measurement for your speed. I don't know where I remember seeing it, if I actually did at all, but I guess it didn't make my guess incorrect?
Ik sonic in advanced 3 looks like hes running rlly slow but sonic in advanced 3 is literally running so fast he has after images. He's literally running faster than light.
Math? I dont need math to know how fast he is, just see how fast he can reach a tree, for example, with a distance of a hundred miles, and set a time and then let google handle the rest. Bing bang boom, you know how fast he is.
friendly reminder this isn't "Fastest" but rather how fast sonic goes in one game. Some sonics actually go even faster like CD, but not ingame due to both engine and "Oh there's actual hostile threats around"
I do wonder what this would turn out to be if you used the light speed dash to calculate distance as a baseline for each game (where possible) rather than his height
@@llennoxyt Well speed = distance / time. If we used the light speed dash on a stretch of rings, e.g. 10 rings. We measure how much time it took, and then multiply that by the speed of light to give us the distance those 10 rings equate to.
@@kariminal2999 But Sonic doesn't actually move at the speed of light during a light speed dash, or else it would basically looks like he teleports from one end of the rings to the other
@@llennoxyt I'd argue he does and it's for gameplay reasons he doesn't. My logic of using something like that as a measurement would be it would be interesting to see how fast he's really going. Since obviously if they made a game which was accurate in terms of his size to how fast he's going at top speed the level would probably be over in less than a few seconds. (Given like we saw he doesn't go anywhere near the speed of sound in pixel measurements)
i wonder if he used the peel-out in cd and mania.. also bro didnt mention that this is only how fast the gameplay portrays him dont let the powerscalers find him😭
I'm glad to see that Sonic Heroes has the fastest Modern Sonic outside of the boost games, though what surprises me is how much faster he is in Heroes than in Shadow 05. I always thought that Shadow 05 had faster movement than Heroes, but it seems that I was proven wrong. Also it's no wonder why I feel that Lost World's gameplay is too slow for my taste, because it mathematically is.
When i heard that classic sonic from forces was the second fastest classic sonic, I thought this video was bs despite my own math skills being awful...like its really really bad for me but after watching the rest and understanding the movement of other games by playing them or observing them I'd say this was pretty accurate. As i said before my math us terrible but i'm wondering if you could've measured the acceleration of sonic going from 0 to his top speed or would that have been too hard
tbh you didn't have to manually measure like almost any of the modern 3d sonic games, the modding community for all of them have documented the exact speed values (in m/s for gen engine games (unleashed, generations, colors, etc.) and decimeters per frame for the adventure games + heros) (kinda a fun little factoid that heros uses a modifed version physics engine of the adventure games, and the player parameters are all the same!)
for ex. sonic in sonic adventure 1 has a soft speed cap for moving forward at 3 decimeters per frame, which then multiplying by .1 (to get meters) then multiplying by 60 (to get a full second) gets you 18 meters per second, or about 64.6 kph (40.26 mph). do keep in mind however that this speed is not a hard limit, and speed up shoes or other potential things can make you faster than this speed for an amount of time. the absolute cap for horizontal speed is 96 m/s (aka 18 decimeters per frame) or 345 kph (214.75 mph)
KM/h, or KMpH, not KPH lol xD - K stands for Kilo which is the mark for 1000x something (kilogram = 1000gram, kilometer = 1000meter) so K alone stands for Kilo which is not enogh since every measurement can be Kilo something
@@maoraharon21 frontier should be lower because I saw a video of Sonic having maximum rings and speed but he's still not that fast why wasn't generations on top or forces frontier should have been lower because it's the slowest boosting game
