Using Nested Parameters for Manufacturer Families 

A good way of having consistent data associated with certain families is to add a nested family with the desired shared parameters into the host manufacturer family you may have downloaded. Then the shared parameters need to be added to the project as well. If the parameters are to be across the entire category regardless of the family, you can certainly skip this step and just add shared parameters to the project as project parameters. This workflow is for specific manufacturer families.
