Using oil to defeat body armor

Another crazy idea that our viewers suggested - can you defeat body armor by applying oil to it?
Well apparently it's possible.
It's obvious from our testing that applying oil to body armor will severely degrade the capabilities of the ballistic material. In some cases the same bullet penetrated more than double the amount of layers than without oil.
We have also tried applying oil to a hollow point bullet and test it on normal ballistic vest but the results were not much different from a normal "un-oiled" bullet.
Any idea on what we should test next?

I wonder how effective a bullet made of bearing bronze is when it's saturated with oil. In theory it would offer the most effective way to contain the oil and upon impact, deformation of the bullet would bush the oil out potentially coating the aramid. It seems pointless though when you can just use a regular bullet with a steel core that is likely cheaper to produce and doesn't create additional fouling in the weapon from the oil coating the rifling.

Oiling bullets it's not the best idea. You will cause overpression and risk bulging the barrel. On a 9mm, you dont risk much, but with higher pressure rounds and smaller bore it could be devastating
@PolenarTactical
@PolenarTactical 4 месяца назад
I know exactly what you mean - for this same reason it's advisable to always clean you barrel dry before shooting. We only put a bit of oil inside the JHP cavity and were careful to not get oil in the barrel itself. But it's good that you wrote a warning because many people do not know about this
@bobhopman4648
@bobhopman4648 4 месяца назад
Please provide sources that a little oil is enough to cause the pressure to Blow a barrel out. Yes oil adds surface tension and weight, but it should not have enough to have that extreme of a result. We have such a variety of ammo available I find it difficult for a little oil to have more of an impact than a different weight projectile or a different amount of powder. I'm sure it has an effect, but can not believe it would cause a barrel to fail let alone blow out. You might have interesting results in a gas operation rifle though.

@bobhopman4648
@bobhopman4648 4 месяца назад
@@PolenarTactical how much is heavy and can you provide a source? I'm finding in my own research that most experts claim it impacts accuracy and cycling, but it would need to be an insane amount to cause actually damage. Also questioning if the spike is actually greater than what you would get from running say a +p or hardcast ammunition vs target? Not saying the physics aren't sound or your advice is wrong or bad, just highly doubting the likelihood of someone using enough oil to actually cause barrel damage after a single shot as the excess oil will be expelled after the first shot anyway. Would love to see someone purposely blow a barrel this way as a video.
@wildmanjeff42
@wildmanjeff42 4 месяца назад
hornady and lee reloading manuals...if you haven't read the manuals don't go modifying ammunition. Bullets are not supposed to be oiled..even small changes in pressure can be enough to damage barrels and even blow up guns if they are not strong enough for the load. This is why they recommend you load with the "starting load" and work up for the gun you are loading for@@bobhopman4648

Teflon wouldn't do much on conventional FMJ bullets because lead is to soft and it would deform anyway. But it might make a difference on a proper bullet...
@DefinitelyNotJ749
@DefinitelyNotJ749 4 месяца назад
They were made back in the 80's by a US company if I remember correctly. There's information online about it, but apparently the Teflon was good for reducing barrel wear and increasing penetration through wood and glass. However it also made the same bullets less effective at defeating Kevlar and Nylon body armour (surprisingly). I'd imagine it's down to PTFE not having a strong enough bond to the copper jacket, so energy is dumped into stripping the coating in the first Kevlar layer.

Your guess is correct - water soaked aramid fibers have reduced friction and loose some of the ballistic properties, the only difference is that just spraying water on the vest won't have the same result because most modern aramid fibers are hydrophobic

The Teflon coated bullets went crazy with over penetration and squirrely routes upon penetration. Varying the rate of twist to 1-13 like original tested M-16's also caused exit wounds of great Varity; i.e. hit the leg, come out your head, etc.
