Using play sand in your aquarium will work but there are much better options. The main reason people stay away from this type of sand is because the granulars are a little too small and they compact too much. The goal with aquarium sand or substrate in general is to have a tiny air gap in between the granulars to allow plant roots to move in between them.

You could probably get away with using clay sand in your fish tank but plants are not going to thrive in it. The best cheap alternative sands to use in a fish tank is blasting sand and pool filter sand. You will pay on average around US$10 for a 50 pound bag of it. That’s 50% less than what you would pay for normal aquarium sand.
Play sand does not contain any silicates and that’s what makes it heavier than other sands. If you don’t plan on keeping Aquarium Plants this type of Sand will probably work but it’s not the best are most ideal option.
