So glad I have a pair of these. It doesn't seem like there is any way to buy them anymore. I've never had a safety issue with mine. I read about a guy once that accidentally knocked his barbell off the jcups and it landed on his throat. I always try to toss a couple of plates on my barbell.
The problem with hooks is that if you are by yourself and lifting very heavy dumbbells when you get to the bottom and you cannot bring them back up onto the barbell you’ll have to drop them damaging the hooks
I have shoulder pain and thinking of selling my nice pro series 90lbs powerblocks since they don't work with these mad hooks😔...If I sell them I will get some adjustable dumbells that go up to 50lbs only for my hitt workouts. I probably get loadable handles to use them with my 25lbs olimpyc size plates and these spotter hooks. I tought about getting the ironmasters but don't like the fact that I have to bring them down to change weigjt as opposed as the loadable handles where u can live them on hook and load them from there.
If I remember correctly, these particular ones have been tested to hold 800 lbs (used together). Unfortunately, they're no longer made and I'm not sure what the capacity of the ones I have seen are variations of them and I'm not sure what their capacity is.
They unfortunately don't make this type anymore but there is another company making similar - themadspotter.com/ I haven't tested them myself yet but they look interesting.
I would actually agree that they are unnecessary in that you don't NEED to do presses, however they are extremely useful for getting heavy weight into position so you can focus on performing the actual exercise safely and from the best starting position!
I press 100 pound dumbells for 10 reps easy. I bought these hooks to try out. Instead of using my 100's like i normally do, i dropped down to 80 pounders just to try the hooks. Let me tell you, ill never use them again. IT was the most awkward movement ever trying to use these hooks and starting at that range of motion. Injury waiting to happen. I suppose they might work if you use them from birth
Definitely does take some practice. Good that you started lighter. I did notice that with the way the hooks wrap around - makes the grip a bit awkward and you have to rotate the dumbbells to unhook and rehook. Definitely not without issues.
