Just five hours at dusk of extra light makes all the difference between a dormant plant and one that's cranking out a leaf every three days.

I start my seedlings under a blurple from Costco (Innovo, I think) and an Ott full spectrum desk lamp. When they start to grow up a bit I move them to the Spiderfarmer 2000. Then start new seedlings under the cheaper lights again. Always good to have backup seedlings!

I use florescent shop lights too. I use two side by side with one cool and one warm bulb in each. I made a frame of strapping lumber attached to the ends of a 6' folding table. Its a hack job, but does the trick. I also have an LED grow light. They both perform well. The florescent light is a little gentler light which is easier to control.

Car head lamps are a cheap but very effective lights for growing plants and you can get them in 8000k you just need a good 12volt power supply of at least 4 amps.

Lumins and PAR are a deep rabbit hole to me lol but as far as intensity of light you want to aim for is 20 to 25 watts per sqft is what ive found. Thats just a ballpark to help determine how high from the plant top to start off . Hope this helps someone

6000k to 6500k works best for my house plants and I've even grown vegetables with white light and its worked better. I like to look at nature as a guide, the Sun is white and gives off a white light, it can appear yellow but that is just the earth atmosphere. In space the Sun is white around 6500K color temperature. If using household bulbs its best to twist of the defuser caps for better lighting.

When growing aquatic plants we used a cool and a warm fluorescent bulb to cover the spectrum better than a single bulb or an expensive grow light. You are correct about the light intensity from older bulbs as a coating starts to form on the inside chemical reaction and electricity. We changed the bulbs every six months or so since we had a large area lit by them we would take them from the "grow area" and replace ones that burned out.
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada 3 года назад
Oh interesting I didn’t realize it was the coating

I have smart LED bulbs the have adjustable KV from warm to cool. I even have one that can change red, blue, green and etc. Do you think these would be a good light source and do think it would be possible to get blossom predictions with them? I can use the app gor them to schedule chages in color brightness and duration. I also have a 4x4x60 grow tent and this is my first year growing so I am trying to figure out the cheapest and easiest way to a very least overwinter pepper plants but if possible I'd like them to continue producing.

Not about lights, but about heat mats. Zone 5a. Montréal. As of now I have 4 plants that sprouted out of 20. I planted valentines day. What should I do? Move the sprouted one off of heating mat and put it under lights. Or wait till they all sprouted.? They are various kinds of veggies/fruits, my tomatoes catnip and sugar baby sprouted are what sprouted.. thank you
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada 3 года назад
Leave them for now but if you start noticing leaning then switch them to light. If the light is moveable move the light over the heat pad the ungerminated seeds will be just fine.
