For Acoustic Guitars, reverb is possibly the most common effect but when using a guitar pedal it can be tricky to get a natural sounding reverb that doesn't sound overwhelming and drown out your playing.
In this video I talk about using Reverb with Acoustic Guitar and the methods that I use to get a natural sounding reverb.
For this Demo I'm using the Strymon BlueSky Reverberator.

Great demo. Are used to own this pedal, which I bought primarily for use with my acoustic guitar. Wonderful sounding reverb, kind a wish I had it back. I’m using an Immerse reverb these days. I’m looking to re-buy the Strymon, that’s how good it was!

Hi, thanks for the comment. I haven't used the Immerse reverb but I do love the BlueSky. I thought about getting the BigSky but I only use a 3 or 4 settings at the most so the BlueSky is perfect.

Really useful demo, mate! I’d never understand the true potential with the blueSky AND the acoustic guitar😱 Made me pick up my 20+ year old nylon guitar (with an Fishman mic), just go to town with my blueSky❤️‍🔥 Also, this guy deserves way more subs for the tones he gives us!

Hi Andreas, thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed the video. Ah cool, which Fishman mic do you have? Is it an internal mic? The Blue sky is great, I might do some comparison videos with some other reverb pedals to see how they compare to the BlueSky. Cheers! 👍
@Elfwingson
@Elfwingson 2 года назад
@@FabianHollandGuitar Hi, I really don’t know what Fishman mic that is; my dad put it in way back then but it is a piezo one and he said like ”well, this is one top of the line mic for ya”. I used that guitar a LOT on tours up here in Sweden when I played in our cover band. Anyways, a comparison vid would be pretty cool. Maybe a shootout with some stereo I/O reverb pedals perhaps?🤔 Anyhoo, your vid inspired me to get that old guitar from its case, tune it up and run it through my current pedalboard and I revised some of the old cover songs a long with some new ambient tunes Good times! Cheers!
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
@@Elfwingson happy to inspire! 🙂 Ah ok it's a Piezo yeah I use K&K contact pickups inside the guitar where the bridge is which acts a lot like a Piezo. It's interesting you mentioned stereo, I've experimented in the past with a stereo setup but with my Lap Steel not acoustic. It is a lot more hassle and gear to carry to gigs having a stereo setup but it can sound amazing.

I have owned this pedal for years and play acoustic through it. In front of it I use their Delay, just a touch "thickens" the sound in a "less is more" approach. I use a Grace designs Felix 2 before all this and my effects are inserts. The Felix 2 is great because I have a mic and a piezo sent out as separate signals via a tip/ring/sleeve cable. The Felix gives me separate controls for the two pickups and then I blend the outputs to my liking for the venue. Works well for me.

I use the same reverb pedal live in conjunction with a Grace Design “Alix” preamp and the K&K pickup. It’s really hard to beat that for a live acoustic sound. If you get the two-channel version of the Grace preamp, you can also plug in your KM-184 and mix it together with the pickup sound. You have total control over the eq for each channel. It’s just rather expensive at that point. I just run the guitar mic into the P.A. and let the front of house engineer mix it. It’s amazing how close our setups are. I also love your guitar, by the way.
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar Год назад
Ah yes, you use the K&K as well, it's great! I used to use a Sunrise sound hole pickup for a while which I really liked but It's big chunky thing in the middle of your guitar, not very discrete. Still... I've been thinking of exploring sound hole pickups again. Oh those Grace Design Preamps look great! So it's basically a high end preamp with a parametric EQ onboard? Yeah with the KM-184 I usually use a seperate mic preamp into a parametric EQ and then into a Lexicon Reverb unit all in a little rack unit on stage. It's a little bulky but it works for me.
@alpetteway1387
@alpetteway1387 Год назад
@@FabianHollandGuitar Yes the Grace has everything you need. I like the Alix because it also has 9 volt out so that I can plug in my Reverb pedal and tuner into it and only have a large AC cable to plug in at each gig. I used the Tonebone for a few years and this one is just the next step up.

Good evening Fabian, congratulations on your activities and your skill, your brillant talent. Regarding my acoustic setup I would like to insert a reverb and I'm thinking of Strymon Bluesky or Cloudburst. I kindly ask you if you have ever tried the Strymon Coulburst reverb pedal effect: could you advise me? thank you
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 3 месяца назад
Hi, thanks so much. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😊 I’ve never actually tried the cloudburst myself so I can’t say what the difference is between that and the BlueSky, however the Cloudburst is more recent and looks like it has more features.
@ErwinLeader
@ErwinLeader 2 года назад
What other reasons would you day this is better than bigsky and or other reverb (boss etc)?
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
Hi Erwin, I'd say the BigSky has everything the BlueSky has and much more but it depends if you really need all those features? For me with each pedal I have I use maybe 2 or 3 of my favourite sounds and that's it. So having a smaller pedal makes more sense. But the BlueSky has something a lot of other reverb pedals don't and that's two controls for the High and Low EQ. For me this is very important because it gives me control when shaping just the reverb signal.

Very well explained .. Many thanks! Would this pedal work for a saxophone,, Always strugglin to get the right reverb for solos. Sometimes too much,other times not the right one either,,or not enough. Thanks Mario
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
Hi Mario, thanks for the question. I'm guessing you have some sort of pickup for the saxophone so it can plug into the pedal right? Yeah it can be tricky to get the right balance sometimes, what I find really useful with this is being able to EQ the reverb itself which makes it a lot easier to get that balance the way you want it.
@mariomalette4155
@mariomalette4155 2 года назад
Hi Fabian I apreaciate your comment and video. Yes well i use two microphones for saxes,on Senheiser 421 and just bought a Electrovoice RE20..i don t like clip on,,etc Used one guitard reverb in the past,but it changed a lot my sound,,which i did nt like at all. I want my sound to stay as natural as possible,but with a bit of reverb ,,so i don t sound dry. It s always a pain somewhere to get the aound that i need with a soundboard,or others trying to give me what i really want! Thanks again Mario
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
@@mariomalette4155 Hi Mario, no problem at all. Do you use both microphones at the same time? If so then I would use one with reverb and one without, that might have some interesting results. I use a pickup and a microphone (Neumann Km184) for my guitar on stage and I have the Strymon for the pickup and I have the microphone going through a Lexicon rack mounted reverb unit. I find giving the two signals different kind of reverbs works for me. But then a pickup and a mic have very different sounds so it's not the same as using two mics.
@mariomalette4155
@mariomalette4155 2 года назад
@@FabianHollandGuitar Fabian I use only one at a time. So i wonder if i just set up like i need it too that it should be find? Like i said,i want the most natural sound of my tenor and soprano,but with a bit of reverb ,so i dont sound dry,and also mostly i would like myself to take care of that ,not another person which is never right,most of the time. Maybe this will not work,but i am willing to try. Thanks. Take care.

How do you use it for strumming exactly?
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar Год назад
Hi, thanks for the question. I don't really do much strumming myself so it's hard for me to answer but If I was strumming I would just turn down the mix and decay a little. The more notes that are in there and the louder you play then the more overwhelming the reverb is so (depending on what kind of sound you're after of course) I would turn these parameters down until the reverb doesn't become an overwhelming mess but instead compliments the chords that you're playing. Hope that makes sense.

What the difference between Big sky and Blue sky?
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar Год назад
Hi, thanks for the question. I think the main difference is the big sky can do everything the blue sky can do and LOTS more but the blue sky can't do everything the big sky can do. And obviously theres a big difference in the price. I think there's videos on RU-vid explaining the difference between the two in detail. I dont own the big sky so my knowledge in that pedal is limited. Thanks, hope that helps.

Yeah sound engineers are more likely to use some rack until reverb like a Lexicon or something and an engineer can give you a nice sounding reverb but I've always found it better to come with your own reverb and effects, so you can get the exact sound you want.
