This is a video that explains how I have used some silicone molds to make lace embellishments I can use on cards and other home decor crafts.

@@handcraftedbyhelen1963 I'm having difficulty finding the Golden Molding paste. All I see is Fiber paste which usually has strings in it, so I don't think that will work.
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 2 года назад
I dont think that would work. Try finding a paste plaster filler at a hardware store, but it cant be silicone based and it has to be a flexible one otherwise it will crack when you try takungbut outbox the mold. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for this video! This opens a whole new world for me, alhamdulillah! I have been longing to use die cuts. But a manual die cutting machine is not available in my country. I can get one from abroad. BUT what I don't like is that I can't use my own designs because I have to buy ready-made die cuts. An electronic die cutting machine can enable me to do that but I feel apprehensive. Since they are not readily available in my country, I don't think it will be easy to get it repaired if something happens. Since what is important for me is using my own cut-out designs and they don't have to be on paper, silicone molds are good for me. First I have to design something on my PC and then go to a shop that will laser cut my design on thin metal or some other sturdy material. Then I have to make a silicone mold of my laser-cut design. Once my mold is ready I can use your techniques to reproduce my design when I want it and as much as I want it, in shaa Allah! That means, I will be able to use your technique to make cut-out designs of my own drawing, hand-lettering etc! Once again, thank you. Your video is not long at all, it has just the right amount of detailed info. Keep it up!

Helen, this video has been so helpful. I have some silicone molds from Martha Stewart but nothing like these gorgeous lacy ones. Can't wait to get some. I am curious and I have to ask... have you used the beautiful lace you mentioned as your favorite? Would 3 of those loops fit in the long side of a 5x7 card? I think it would make a stunning wedding card.

Please don’t apologise for the length, I learnt so much from watching . I just bought a small container of acrylic stucco,that’s what they call it in Greece. And some silicon mounds and lace strips have just come so your video is perfect timing. I want to use the designs on tin cans as planters on my veranda this summer. I’ve saved large feta tins as well as smaller olive oil tins and I can’t wait to use my mould designs on them. What kind of adhesive would you suggest I use? I have E-6000 or perhaps wood glue? Thank you for taking the time to show us how it’s done. Be well.
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 3 года назад
Thank you so much, these molds would be perfect for your tins, my husband uses them on terracotta pots for our de k, so very similar, and they look great, he paints them and puts a darker colour on the old and then wipes it off so that colour stays in nooks and crannies, to show up the moldings, they look great. The skys the limit with what you can use them for

just wanted to ask if you have to haze when you are just using the caulk or also when using modelling and texture pastes as well. beautiful job, i have ordered myself lots of moulds from aliexpress.
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 4 года назад
Jake, I de haze modeling pastes as well as caulking,as I am a bit messy and it tidied them up. If you are tidy you might not need to, and I found it was easier to do it whi,e it is in the mold instead of after. My husband doesnt dehaze at all, he tidied everything with a craft knife afterwards. Have fun, it's very addictive. Unfortunately everything is taking ages from Aliexpress at the moment with the pandemic.

This is just genius. Have a question I saw other video and they put corn starch before adding the paste and than on top of design have you tried this if so do you see any difference
@handcraftedbyhelen1963

Norine I haven't tried it with cornstarch, for the caulking I used I didn't need to, so not sure if it would make any difference, as I am not sure why they used it 🌹🌷🌹

Have used air dry clay which us not flexible, but how do the part silicone ones glue on??
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 6 лет назад
Hi Candace. Yes I have used airdry clay, and they are great for some things but not the really fine lacy ones, you just can't get it to stay in the tiny areas of these finer ones. Also the problem with airdry clay is they shrink quite a bit as they dry out, and you can loose some of the detail. To glue the filler ones on (its not silicone, that doesn't work in silicone molds) I use an adhesive spray or use my fine nozzle glue bottle and put the tiniest smear of glue on the back in some strategic areas.

Thank for this lovely informative video. I read that silicon sticks to silicon and you have mentioned that. You used windows and doors frame sealent, isn't this silicon, with you it didn't stick, maybe I am confused, sorry. Did you try 100% silicon with molds? Thank you in advance for your help and advice. Best wishes
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 3 года назад
Tank you for your comment. No it isn't silicone, you are right silicone will stick in the mold. It is a caulking you have to use. A type of plaster compound, our main brand is Selleys but not sure what you will have in your country. Try a hardware store and ask for caulking that's not silicone.

Do you do the dehazing while the paste is still wet or wait until it's dry. Thanks
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 7 лет назад
Thank you Tammy, you do it once it's dry otherwise you end up wiping out all the filler or paste you have put in, as they are quite shallow. Wait until they are totally dry.

I have to tell you about an easy way to clean up your mold to get the film off of the lace/doily before you remove it from the mold. CLEAR PACKING TAPE works perfect for removing that film AFTER it is completely dry. Cut a strip of tape, press down on mold and lift up. Do this to get in all spaces. I use a firm pressing and have yet to lift the piece out of the mold. After you are finished, remove the piece. You can instantly clean the mold up by doing the same process. I get all my pieces done so much more quickly. Give it a go.

Yes it is, otherwise if it is still wet, you end up wiping too much away.

Do you have to wait 24 hours for the caulk to dry and take out of the fondant mold?
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 7 лет назад
Hi Cathey, it really depends on the caulk you are using, the one I was using has a bit of shrinkage, so I usually have to do a second skim over and then wait for that to dry, so it is usually about that long to totally dry. Must try a little corner and see if it is going to come out ok, otherwise leave it a little longer. If it is dry enough to remove, then go ahead, if it isn't dry enough it will either tear, or fall apart. Just trial and error I'm afraid. I tend to do it , if in the mornings, then go off to work, or if it's in the evening, then I leave it until the next morning.
@craftsNstuffBamma
@craftsNstuffBamma 7 лет назад
Thank you. I did end up waiting 24 hours just in case. They turned out beautifully except one that was super detailed. I can use bits of it, but the smaller ones come out awesome. Thank you.

Are you cleaning the moulds after they are dry or while they are drying???
@handcraftedbyhelen1963
@handcraftedbyhelen1963 3 года назад
Hi, I am cleaning it once it has dried out, doesn't have to be completely, but you need the top surface to be dry, because if you do the rubbing/cleaning, you will just wipe out the caulking if it is still wet.

Yvonne, it's just another way of making embellishments, and if you would rather stick to dies then do so, I just love trying new things and thought I would show what I had discovered in case others wanted to have a go. You are right, it's just one more thing to have to buy stuff for. I also do vintage and shabby chic home decor products and thought it would be useful for that too
