Latex Lace is Magical!
Once you get the hang of casting this stuff, you'll be smitten.
Fondant molds, (typically used in cake decorating) are a fabulous addition to your Mixed Media arsenal. The Latex Lace castings you'll create from them are flexible, sturdy, and versatile.
Once you've invested in the molds, all it takes is a quick trip to the hardware store (and your pantry) to obtain everything you need to crank out yards of the stuff!
And once you have all of that lacey goodness at your disposal, the uses are limitless...
Can you add it to furniture surfaces? Heck, yeah. Dress up that curbside find with swathes of delicious lace!
Will it 'stay stuck'? Um, YES. I'm gluing it to everything in sight, and it stays where you put it!
I hope you'll give this a try if you haven't already - there are so many possibilities...

My first thought was to use these molds to add a bit of frill to furniture refinishing projects. Then I thought of the many hat boxes I recovered with wallpaper that could sport some these molds. I know how to crochet doilies and would never put all that work into a hand crocheted piece and then glue it on something. I found a mold for peony flowers, but it looks really shallow when compared to what yours are. I will hope that one works and can actually be used for this technique. Now about scrapbooking, the sky is the limit, as well as other projects that need a bit of embellishing. I see you've used these molds for other projects as well. I am saving this project for when we leave to spend the winter in Arizona. I will do all my moulding then. Right now I'm thinking of some beautiful little craft floor length shelves I can cover with these lace molds. Thanks for all the ideas I've got going through my head.
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Wow! I love the idea of using Latex Lace with craft shelving, Laurie! And yep, lot's of folks embellish furniture with it, too! All of your ideas are awesome. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have a wonderful time, my friend. xox
@Laurieb2851
@Laurieb2851 6 лет назад
The shelves are about 8 inches deep and the carpenter cut hearts - two on the top, two on each side - top and bottom. I had stenciled apple blossoms on the sides between the hearts. I still love it, but it definitely needs repainting again. I'm going to love the lace down both sides. I have used them for cat figurines and a few books. Hubby started using them for his little junk he puts in his pockets and brings home. Any flat surface will do. I tried putting a decorative shelf in the bathroom, and same thing there. The shelf looks cute with cat figurines and a few other decorative things, but now it has hubby's eye drops sharing the space as well. He had a fit when I asked him to consider another spot for his eye drops. So, they remain on the shelf, lol!

I’ve now lost count how many times I’ve watched some of your mold casting videos. Sigh. This one alone I’ve watched maybe 6 or 7 times. But I’m glad I watched one more time, I’d forgotten that you said to let the latex remain in the mold overnight. I’m working on six different projects right now, including two watercolor paintings. But the one I’m enjoying the most are several mixed media things that were inspired by you!! One is an altered book cover, which I’m going to use lace that is cast in a silicone mold. I know that the IOD molds are investments in the future but sheesh, I want them ALL and they are so pricey. Baby steps, Annie. Baby steps. LOL 💜🖤🧡😻🎨🖌✌️

Annie! I love the happy, busy energy in this message! Sounds like you are on a Creative Tear - and that is fabulous news. I've had the best luck with Latex Lace when I leave it to cure overnight - so I try to just discipline myself to do that. The altered book cover and watercolor paintings sound wonderful, girl! So glad to know you are just diving in and creating! xoxo

I was watching Black Magic crafts trying to do something similar and the comments section got a bit wild about needing more caulk lol. I came back to you because I was fairly sure you had done it successfully, he did too but the mold he used was too deep but got a good cobblestone effect using a roller with caulk spread on a rubber backing.

I just tried my very first caulking lace and boy do I wish I had seen this video beforehand. It's still drying but I'm sure it's a throw away! No other video spoke of using corn starch so I just smeared the stuff into a very thin border strip. I found it very difficult to get it in and keep it in - I was using a plastic clay tool that kept pushing the caulking out instead of in - it was hard plastic and your tool looks like it makes perfect sense for this project! Anyway, I just subscribed so you will surely be hearing from soon - like, lots and lots of questions!! Thank you for posting this great instructional video.

Hey Tina! Well, it sounds like an improvement - my only suggestion is to make certain that you are filling the mold cavities to the maximum - some of the aspects of these designs are so stinkin' tiny that no material known to man would be strong enough! A coat of sprayable PlastiDip might help with structural integrity - but will also obscure some of the detail. xoxo

Neat video. Well done. Two questions: 1) Any idea how to make the silicone molds themselves, perhaps from pieces of old lace or from low relief openwork patterns? 2) can this work be done with cast off latex paint? I hate buying newly manufactured mediums and materials when trash or discarded materials can be reverse engineered? (buying any new medium or material funds the creation of waste, while using trash materials and mediums reduces waste.) Thanks in advance.
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 лет назад
Hi Jack...in order to create your own silicone molds of existing lace samples, it will be necessary to prevent the silicone from binding to the textiles. Now, I haven't attempted this particular procedure, but I do have quite a bit of mold making experience, so my best suggestion would be to give this idea a try with a lace fragment that you can afford to lose, if it doesn't work out. Okay, here's how I would approach it: probably the easiest thing to do would be to soak the lace in an acrylic medium (even acrylic paint) - the goal is to 'plasticize' the fibers, so they are no longer able to absorb moisture. Dip the lace in the medium, then lay on a non-stick sheet to dry completely. The resulting lace should now be stiff and almost impervious to moisture. Then, prepare a mold box with your 'master' secured to the bottom, coat it with mold release, mix your pourable silicone and pour. Allow the mold to cure, remove the master, then cast your lace. I don't see why latex paint wouldn't work as a casting medium, but be prepared for longer curing times than the caulking.

Heather I tried to do it, I left it all night to dry but nothing, was wet. Is it possible that it depends on the fact that my house is very humid? How can I do? I think I'll have to wait this summer maybe with the heat I can succeed. I also wanted to ask you, but can I do it only with "alex fast dry" or can I use some other product? Because it comes to me from the USA but including shipping costs it costs me a lot. Thank you very much, you're always fantastic.
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 лет назад
Hello, my friend! Uh, oh...sounds like you are using a different brand of caulking - be aware that a silicone based caulk will cause a disaster: the silicone will bond to the mold, and it will be a horrible mess...( I know this is confusing because Alex Fast Dry has 'silicone' in the name - but it has only a very SMALL amount in comparison to the Latex, so it doesn't cause a problem) It's possible that the humidity is causing a delay in the curing - also, using molds that are deeper than 1/8 of an inch or 3.175 mm will take FOREVER to cure, no matter what brand of caulk you use. Some people have had success by placing the mold into the freezer overnight - that may help you. It's so frustrating that you have to pay such high shipping charges! I would ask around at the hardware / plumbing store for a caulk that is LATEX, preferably quick drying. Best of luck, darling! xoxo

@@Thicketworks I used "Alex fast dry", I spent a lot of shipping but I ordered three tubes. Hi Heather. So, I've tried your technique and that was an utter fail ;( Gonna cost me my mold too so double sad. I think I didn't use to correct product, though, so my bad. I want to try again but I want to be more sure I get the correct product (especially because I have to order again the mold, which is costy in monney and time). My mistake was, I think, to use "silicone" (for bathroom), because that's was what I had at home and I thought I knew what it was so I didn't bother to look up what "caulk" meant v.v; The silicone I used stuck to the mold despite the corn starch. Now, I'm in France so I can't just get the exact same product you use, I have to find the equivalent here. I found some "caulk" but it doesn't always specify whether there is silicone in it. Is it important I get some caulk + silicone or would it work if it's just "caulk"? (Other times the label on the shelf says "caulk with silicone" but on the product itself it's not clear if it's caulk, it just says silicone so I'm really not sure. I don't want to throw away a second mold :( ) Thank you for your help!
@Meanne77
@Meanne77 5 лет назад
Also, on the "caulk" product, it is said it's washable with white spirit before it dries but you seem to just use a sponge with water...?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 лет назад
Oh, no! That is so frustrating, Meanne77! And yes, it happened precisely because of the silicone that was used. It is CRUCIAL to find a caulking that is latex based. It doesn't need to include silicone at all, (although the Alex FastDry demonstrated here does). You may want to visit the painting section of your local hardware store and ask specifically for a LATEX product. And yes, latex caulk will clean up with water while it is still wet - no white spirit needed. This is one of the major differences between the two types of product. Hope this helps!

@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 6 лет назад
Uh, oh! Sounds totally frustrating, Evie. Since you've double checked that you are using DAP Alex Fast Dry White Acrylic Latex Caulk Plus Silicone - my only other thought would be that somehow you got a 'bad batch'. It should be the consistency of whipped cream cheese when you first dispense it, and it should be super sticky and gooey. If yours felt different than that, then I recommend picking up a new tube. Environmental factors play a role, too. If your environment has super low humidity - it may be that the caulk is curing too fast. Some folks say that curing the castings in the freezer has helped them to obtain better results. You might want to do a small test to see if that helps. Finally, please ditch the whole 'I feel stupid' thingie...it won't help, and it just isn't true, girl. We're rooting for you! Hang in there, and let us know how it turns out! xoxo

Mine did this at first; but I think I was in too much of a rush to de-mold and tried it after only a few hours. Like you, it tore and crumbled so I stopped.
