Adding snap weights to your fishing arsenal will allow you to present your baits to fish that are down in deep water and/or hugging the bottom. I frequently use them when targeting deep fish with lots of success, so I put together this video as an introduction to using snap weights as well as a couple tricks I use in different situations in order to help YOU catch more fish.

You catch some nice fish and are one tough dude to be out in some of that weather in a Kayak. Keep up the good work. I enjoyed your video. Going to try that drop weight technique.

Great video. Nice hacks. I use the precision app, but they list 10#mono for snap weights. Any idea how many feet you generally gain by switching to 10/4 braid? (such as 10# fireline)?

I generally use 10# mono for my snap weight setups and use braid for my trutrip diver setups. I’ve heard that the snap weights can slip on braid so I try to avoid it unless I’m loaning a set of trolling rods.

Awesome video! How does this affect when you get a strike, or have to set the hook? Also, my understanding is that when you are reelint in and get to snap weight, you just quickly unclip it from the line and keep reeling? My thoughts are a 1oz- 1.5oz weight 25' up the line from the lure is going to really change how the fight is, and even potentially risk creating some slack in the line when the fish changes direction.

I honestly cant tell its there when fighting the fish unless its 4oz+ just be sure to give yourself enough line to quickly get the snap weight off without creating slack in the line.

Matt Leben keeps telling me to calibrate my trolling combos line counters. I haven't yet. Is it absolutely necessary for kayak trolling?? I have 2 Ugly Stick 7.5' combos with R & L side planer boards. 2 lines out is good enough for me, I don't want to have too much going on at once.

Absolutely. The reason we use line counters is to be accurate at getting the presentation where you want it. If it's not calibrated you'll think you're at one number but you'll be off, sometimes by a lot and won't spend much time in the strike zone

Hey Chuck question here, what kind of line/lb test do you run on your line counters for trolling? Nice video, very easy to understand method. So essentially you can eliminate the need to buy deep divers if you wanted too and just use weights!! no need to buy same colors in both shallow/deep diver

@ChuckEarls 3 года назад
Thanks Mark! Shallow divers and deep divers produce a different action so I always carry and use both. But at times I'll use a snap weight to get my shallow baits deep as with my deep divers. My trolling rods are spooled up with 10lb xt mono

Learn new stuff daily. I thought same lure shallow/deep had same action but different depths

does it matter if u use braid with the wights?
@ChuckEarls

Sometimes the snap weights struggle to hold position on braid. You could wrap it one time around the clip but it would be tougher to get off. Personally I prefer Mono when running snap weights and braid when running TruTrips or dipseys
