Using sodium percarbonate to remove pond muck!

This is a bit of a follow up on a video I made recently on how I used hydrogen peroxide on my pond to treat algae. In this video I use sodium percarbonate - Which produces hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate when it reacts with algae or mulm/ detritus.
Here's a link to the other video showing how hydrogen peroxide was used to kill algae- • This happened when I a...
Here's a n amazon link to sodium percarbonate (amzn.to/3U5x5gC)
Here's a link to the koi forum I mentioned in the video if you want to learn about other peoples experiences using this product- www.koiphen.co...
The dosage rates I used for this experiment were 1 teaspoon per 200L (200L = approx 50Gal). Its important that there is something for the sodium percarbonate to react with. If it doesn't break down quickly its toxic and dangerous. If there is algae or mulm/muck/ detritus it has something to react with and quickly breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate. The hydrogen peroxide then quickly breaks down into oxygen and water.

I'm really digging this method. I Sprayed down a small concrete water fountain I have the other day. It really cleaned it up a lot. Thanks as always Kev, Make a great week !

Thank you for this mate. Im just starting to get my fish pond up and running and it's already got lots of algae and muck and i don't even have fish in there yet. I'm learning lots from your videos, keep up to good work mate. From South Africa.

Will try this treatment come spring here in mid Atlantic US. I have a small pond (est. 700-800 gal)using bog filtration per your vids. Never has been cleaned other than skimming. Thanks!

I've done this treatment before on my koi pond. It's handy to use when you want to do a "soft reset" on the filter by removing algae (did it to kill string algae).

if I'm understanding correctly, this method will kill off string algae as well as lift the mulm? in which case, this method would make more sense because you said it was cheaper. You mentioned standing there for half an hour to collect the mulm that floats up, but what happens with the string algae? I assume that doesn't just dislodge from the rocks and start floating around to be netted out within half an hour right? And for string algae in a stream, is it enough just to treat the pond and leave the pumps on, or must I sprinkle this powder directly onto the string algae in the stream?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 7 месяцев назад
For string algae you want to apply it directly. The sodium percarbonate reacts with organics to create hydrogen peroxide. Point being it needs to react to create the hydrogen peroxide. If it doesn’t react with anything it is still sodium percarbonate which isn’t ideal.

@@Ozponds Well you dont have a cloudy water problem... but about a half cup of baking soda per 500 gallons of water... and the baking soda some how makes all the muck sink to the bottom and clears up water.

The bicarbonate releases CO2 into solution and doesn't nucleate at the micro level like H2O2 does. So there is no added buoyancy to make the algae/crud float. There will be a pH spike, but this will be quickly negated as the other plants assimilate the excess CO2 and a lot of it will dissipate via the surface agitation. Not being an oxidising agent, it will not raise the ORP rapidly into positive readings. The rise in CO2 should not affect filter bacteria due to rapid dissipation, so long as the aeration and flow are maintained. I haven't tried this in my pond, but I imagine that the sunken algae would prove to be more difficult to remove than the floating stuff. A pond vacuum may be needed.

Hi Kev. Little bit offtopic, but wanted to ask you about placing wetland or bog filter close to house, windows and summer terrace. Are there any cons like smell or something like that? I am plannng to upgrade my parents pond with wetland filter. They have around 100 m3 of water in it. So it will not be small, but mostly around 10 m3. Thank you for your answer.
@Ozponds

I’ve never noticed a smell. As long as it’s easy to access for cleaning I don’t see a problem.

I have a question. I have had a pond for 20 years. Well my husband left hose going and it overfilled. Thank goodness I caught it added chemicals and fish are fine BUT now all the dirt and stuff is in the pond. I’m pumping it down I no I have a lot of leaves and stuff at the bottom question- could I add sodium percarbonate when it’s low to get the stuff out of there or will it hurt fish and do I need pump going? Please help I’m soooo “P-ED” at my husband right now
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 3 месяца назад
I’m not sure that it will lift up un-decomposed muck and leaves. I’d net out whatever I could and maybe try just a light dusting of the sp. In small doses it seems quite safe.

I've heard that the algae collects due to a deficiency of Oxygen in the water. If the pond is aerated properly it prevents the algae.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 7 месяцев назад
Maybe, depends on the algae. There are thousands of documented types of algae all built to thrive or succumb in different environments.
