RU-vid does not allow me to put links in comments. But, I just tried again and a search of New York Tax in the Ancestry Wiki does bring up a link to the correct page - it's under "Page Title Matches" and you have to click on it but it's there.

Crista ... THANK YOU! Your one tiny little tip today about looking around the records to see who the neighbors might be just found my great, great paternal grandparents. I had hit a brick wall with my great grandmother, never even thinking about checking the neighborhood of my great grandfather. As soon as you mentioned that in this session, I paused it, went to the 1880 census of my great grandfather and THERE SHE WAS!! I cannot thank you enough for this tip. I shall start watching more often!

There are some records for New York residents included in the federal IRS tax assessment lists. You can also find an article about New York tax records by hovering over Learning Center on Ancestry and clicking on Family History Wiki. Then do a search for New York Tax.

The link for the New York Tax Records appears to be moved. Could you point me in the right direction; specifically for 1920's and 1930's. Thank you

This was a very helpful presentation! I immediately searched for my ancestors who owned businesses, and found some great stuff! Baltimore had a piano tax... who knew? Fabulous presentation, as always!

Thanks. I found it under "Page Title Matches". It sounds like the NYC Archives at 31 Chambers St. has some tax records. I have been going there many times to get vital records. On my next trip, I will investigate their NYC tax records.

I tried searching the Ancestry Wiki for "New York tax". The result was: "There is no page titled "new york tax". You can create this page." As for the federal IRS tax assessment list, there are New York records. But, the database description says: "New York, 1862-1866" That does not help when my people did not arrive until 1900.

There are some videos to help African Americans with their family history. Is is extremely sad and frustrating that those roadblocks do show up a lot, tho. And so, fairly recent. 😥
