This is an in-depth overview (is that an oxymoron?) of how a Behringer X-Touch works in X32 control mode. In this video, the X-Touch is connected to an X32 Rack console.
I can't begin to tell you how helpful this video is! I really wish that Behringer would offer this much depth on the itouch. Thank you for taking the time to make and up load this!
Outstanding video. Very informative and straight to the point. Some of the buttons that you weren't sure of functional for X32 control would at least be used for DAW control. Thank you for a great video!
You’re welcome! Yeah, I made the video because I couldn’t find most of this information anywhere. If you download the driver for the X-Touch, there is a PDF of the button layout. That’s how I got started in figuring the rest out.
THANK YOU so much for this extremely informative video! We have this exact setup and I didn't have a clue on how to control the Mute Groups (or anything else for that matter). You saved me. God Bless you!
Great video! Thank you for making something so helpful. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, the “cycle” button changes your input routing from Record to Play. It’s the function of the the 6th encoder on the home tab of the routing menu. Great for virtual soundcheck!
Thank you so much for this in depth video. Looking to set up a small church with x32 rack but also looking for a good way of controlling from the front of house and this looks like the answer. Great job.
I'm about to make this purchase for my Livestream Audio Techs... I had this thought when I discovered but was waiting on someone to make a video demo. I'm lovin all this detail! Our mix is coming in to our x32 rack via Dante in a separate room.
This was a great video. It's much appreciated. You went in-depth and you explained well. Functions like jog wheel are for DAW control. You're using the x touch like a console, and consoles don't have directional buttons and nudge controls as they don't manipulate clips or scenes. Please do an update video on using the x touch with the x32 Rack. Thank you!
Hi Keith, thanks for checking it out. Yes, you're correct about the jog wheel. This video is on using the X-Touch with the X32 Rack. What new information would you want in an updated video? Thanks
Maybe using the Dante expansion, taking the X32 Rack mix for recording into A DAW. That's what I'm imagining how I want to use this set up. It's actually an inexpensive way to record with multiple quality mic pres, monitoring, live performance or studio over Ethernet.
Thanks! I think it depends on how you plan to use it. Studio? Stage? In the studio, the most obvious difference in the control surface is that the X32 Producer as the advantage of controlling 16 channels at once (vs 8/9), while the X-Touch has the advantage of color-coded scribble strips. If you're using it on the stage, you can run your ins/outs directly to the mixer, which stays by the stage, and control it from mix position without having to run a conventional snake, as long as the X-Touch and X32 are on the same network via CAT5 or WiFi.
The Rack is difficult to get around- newbie may find themselves frustrated. Rack + X-Touch in studio maybe but you'll find a steep learning curve (that may be better used recording/crafting your music). Newbie + Rack + live gig = deep sadness and regret. I'm 3 yr. X32 (full size) user. Bought the Rack for live- even downloaded my presets into the rack. It's still very frustrating at times.
Yes, it's described in the video. Scroll through the fader banks to find DCA faders (2:30) and hit the dynamics/assign button and go to page 3 to assign channels to DCAs (11:50).
Great Video, We have a rack mount console and we've been using tablets to do the mixing. My question is, when you connect the xtouch remotely does it transfer the settings from the rack?
Hi Richard, Yes. The X-Touch doesn't have any settings on its own (if you're thinking about how X32-Edit software works, the X-Touch does not have the ability to have its own "offline settings" like that). It has constant 2-way communication with the mixer, so any settings that you see or make on the X-Touch are actually settings on the mixer itself. As soon as you connect it, it shows the actual settings on the mixer.
Great video! I have a question: Does the X32 rack´s display follow what you do on the X-Touch? Like when you select the EQ for a channel, does the display on the X32rack switch to that EQ page and visualize what you are dialing in?
Thanks for this breakdown. Just bought an X32 rack and am looking for some hardware to integrate into it as I'm getting tired of the iPad app. One quick question: Does your X32 rack have a slight electronic hum to it when powered on? Mine does and I'm wondering if that's an issue. Thanks.
Amazing video. just wanted to know how can you connect a separate laptop for zoom or teams via dante network and being controlled by the xtouch?? thanks in advance
Hey Taylor, thanks! I don't know of a way to link channels via the X-Touch, unfortunately. I always keep a tablet handy at the gig for things like this.
Thanks for the review. I recently purchased the X-Touch to work in conjunction with the XR 18 mixer for live performance. I couldn't figure out how to take the signal from the X-Touch via USB or any other method to send it to Live Strimming. Those videoclips are supposed to answer this question - did not give an answer. I would be grateful for help.
Andrew - What version Firmware are you running on your x32 Rack? I have noticed that with ver. 3.09 the Automix, Play folder(USB) and Route Play first off only work in XCTL Mode and do not work at all with XCTL/MC or XCTL/HUI Mode mode. Even more is that the AutoMix is on the opposite end X=Click and Y= Solo. I am working from the full size X32, are you seeing the same thing?
Great video, thanks! How customisable is the fader layout and assignments? E.g. could we set it up to have someone control only selective mixes busses and e.g. sends from all channels to those busses? This would include no access to the main level from the x-touch. The scenario is a volunteer at a church who has to run a separate mix to a live stream, but does not need access to all other main channels. If not via the control x32 option, then I wonder if something like this might be possible with a over midi-type setup?
Hi Pieter, unfortunately not. As far as I know, the X32 and X-Touch channel/bus/fader layout are static. You’d probably need to teach the volunteer how to make sure they were controlling the desired bus mixes. There is probably a way to do what you’re asking with advanced MIDI control, but the X-Touch isn’t programmable, so it probably wouldn’t work. I believe Behringer provides the MIDI implementation specs for the X32. You could look at that to work out a custom control situation.
Hi, really useful video. I have the same setup with the X32 rack onstage and my X-Touch at FOH. I also have a PC running X32-Edit at FOH. Is there way to make the rack follow channel selects etc and therefore the x32-edit software in front of me will follow the channel selected on the X-Touch.
Thanks for the video mate. Do you know if you can have the Tap for the delay somehow. This was the main reason for me buying it and can’t work out how to get it going.
Great video, thank you! Have you figured out how to get the scribble strips to display the channel label instead of the bus configuration (Pre, PostEQ, etc) when in fader flip mode?
@@mhzministries This is unfortunate. Just got a X-Touch and X-32 Rack and when I found this great video, I was surprised that the scribble strip would change display without a way to give you channel label.
Sure, I use console marking tape from GoodBuyGuys.com. I'm pretty sure that's 1/2" tape. www.goodbuyguys.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=22_52_83
Thanks! For tap tempo, you go to one of your effect engines that is set to delay (16:18 in the video), then use the "record enable" button right under the "time" parameter to tap tempo. For phantom power, go to the "track" layer (in the video, my tape label says "GAIN"). While pressing and holding the encoder for the channel you want to toggle 48V for, press the record enable button just below. You'll see a "P" appear next to the gain value on the scribble strip.
Not in X-Ctl mode, but I haven't tried using the newer "Ctrl" or CtrlRel" modes, which allow for custom MIDI commands. You may be able to use "XctlCtl" mode, which allows you to flip between XCtl and Ctl modes with a single button press. That's the extent of my knowledge on it :)
Hi and thanks for the vid. I’m a newbie with an XTouch looking to control a MR18. I’m wondering how I can recall or assign buttons to Buses. Like what you have at 4:20. and where you have used tape to name the buttons. Thanks
@@andrewhenderson8782 thanks for your response. It is in Xctl in the first little screen to the left. I’ve just noticed some other options of xctl/…. Should it be 1 of them
@@andrewhenderson8782 everything is working fine. Except i just want to choose Bus from pressing 1 button then a bus gets called and sliders move to the preset position. Like a single button press to recall bus 1. (that changes could be made to on the fly)
@@utilisemedia The only two things I did before making this video are (1) put the X-Touch in Xctl mode, and (2) make sure the X-Touch and the mixer are on the same network and can "talk to" each other. Everything else you see in the video is just the default settings. When you press the button that is labeled "Bus 1" on my X-Touch (which is actually the "MIDI Tracks" button on yours, if you don't have yours relabeled), you should automatically enter "sends on fader" mode for Mix Bus 1.
Last question I swear, which rack case is that? I've been looking at a 6RU so I can store the X touch in there as well. Is it small enough to carry on a plane?
I think it’s this one: gatorcases.com/products/racks-portable/tour-wood-flight-racks/g-tour-shallow-rack-cases/6u-shallow-road-rack-case-g-tour-efx6/ You’ll have to check the dimensions on the site against the airline requirements. I’ve never tried to fly with it.
@@getlostinsound thanks man! I was looking at the rolling version of that! But for anyone interested, I believe it is too deep to carry on a plane. I just flew with an 11" deep, 22 x 23" L x W and it BARELY fit. So, I think I'm going with 3RU roller bag just for the X32 + laptop/controller backpack combo made by gator.
It was a hard decision whether to buy the x32 rack with the xtouch or the X32 compact. I went for the compact and think I made the right choice except the xtouch has the advantage of being the better DAW contreoller since the X32 compact has only limited control, the full version is way better and the wing is best but you pay a price for the extended features.
This video is just for "X-Control" mode. I believe there is a "custom" mode, but have not looked into that. I'm sure the information is in the manual or the documentation that comes with the latest firmware.
Hi, yes it is. I don't have any experience using it with the XR18, but there are other videos and manuals available for how to control the XR18 with the X-Touch. Thanks for watching this.
Great video! I was thinking about getting an xtouch and an xr18 to mix the live sound for my worship band. I need something portable like the xtouch, would this be good for running live music?
Yep, that’s a great setup. I’ve used it several times. As you’ll probably read elsewhere, don’t rely on the built-in WiFi of the XR18. I prefer a wireless router that is hardwired to both the XR18 and the X-Touch, and just use the WiFi capability for mobile devices.
@@getlostinsound so for now my set up would be everything up on stage with me… no sound guy. So I guess I wouldnt have to use a modem at all , I would just wire directly from the xtouch to xr18 right? Also would it be hard to mix just from the xtouch with no laptop or iPad?
You can certainly wire directly, but keep in mind that there are certain functions/can’t you can’t get to with the X-Touch (I mention a few at the end of this video). You’ll have to decide whether that will work for your scenario. Personally, I like at least having the option of connecting another device, even if I don’t plan to use it often.
Yes, no problem at all. I’ve used the X-Touch with the mixer, hard-wired computer, and wireless tablet, all connected via Ethernet or WiFi to the same router.
Hi Søren. I'm not sure. I've had the X-Touch in my studio for the last few months and haven't been using it with the X32 Rack as much. Next time I connect it to the X32, I'll check this out.
@@getlostinsound thanx! I did see that. Maybe my Termanology is off. Let me explain, would I be able to take channel 16 from the bands X 32, and control it from my channel 1 on my X touch? Looking to have the X touch faders control random X 32 channels. Thanx!
@@tahrahandrews1829 Oh ok! No, unfortunately you can't rearrange channels. When in X-Ctl mode, the X-Touch mirrors the X32/M32 mixer's layout. If this is a dealbreaker, you may want to take a look into the mixing station app for mobile devices. I use it often when running sound from a tablet and I like it a lot better than the stock Behringer app. I have not used this feature, but apparently you can connect the X-Touch (in Mackie Control mode) directly to your mobile device (running the mixing station app), and the X-Touch will mirror whatever layout you have set up in the app.
@@getlostinsound Thank you so much for the info.. Such a bummer, i thought that was one of the easier things to do with digital mixers.. Oh well.. I’m going to have my sound man dig in just to make sure.. Great idea on the non Behringer app; I actually use one from a Fyre pad (the Amazon pad) I use an app where you can add only the channels you’d like to see (they call it a layer). I’m a drummer, so i want to get away from trying to manipulate any kind of pad while I’m performing. Plus i have a 20ch analog board behind me for drums, etc.. At least there are options. Thank yo again.
Hey Nathan, I can’t remember what firmware I was using when I made the video, but I believe I am currently running 3.08. No, the X-Touch doesn’t update your computer or tablet screen.
@@getlostinsound damn!!!! But i thought i saw a video of someone using it to update their X Edit or Mix screen. So at least that's something. And on the low, you should make cutouts of your tape overlays and sell that shit haha. I would buy one. But thanks for the labeling guide man.
How do i get the scriblestrips to be Collored ?, when i'm looking at my X32 Compact Desk or on my PC the channels all have the Correct Collor. But on My X-Touch all the scriblestrips on all channels DCA etc are the standard Blue. Somehow i cant get the Collor on the scriblestrips of the X-touch... Everythinmg else works. Please Help is apreciated.
I'm not sure. There aren't any options I've found to turn off the scribble strip colors. When I connect to an X32, I get multicolor scribble strip colors, but when I connect to a DAW (Studio One, Ableton, etc.) they're all the same color. You're connected directly to an X32 mixer, right? If you hold the channel 1 select button while booting up, you can see what the mode settings are. My "mode" is set to Xctl (X32 control) mode, and "Ifs" is set to network. If you're in a different mode (MC, HUI, etc) or if you're connected via MIDI cables, you may have different results.
Hey, I was just looking back at my notes and realized that I did have the "X-LIVE Layout" PDF document that's included with the X-Touch firmware download. It shows the button locations.
Okay I loaded M32. Do I have to plug it into the router via ethernet? It wont change colors in Mackie Mode. And how can I use the M32 in conjunction with my DAW?
Hey Anthony, I'm using an ethernet cable directly between the X-Touch and the X32 Rack. I had to make sure they had compatible static IP addresses for this to work. You could also connect both devices to a router or switch. If you're still having trouble getting them to communicate, I'd reach out to a friend who some computer networking experience. I'm using X32 control mode (NOT Mackie mode), which is specifically made for communicating with the X32 or M32 consoles. This is probably why you aren't getting color scribble strips. I'm not using a DAW (or even a computer) in this video. I'd check some other resources for info about using the M32 with your DAW.
The Mackie protocol does not support color in you scribble strips. It does support Alphanumeric characters. You can *hard code* colors using a sysex dump. I have not found that to be practcal
You don't use it as a midi controller when connected to an X32. Make sure it is on the same network and use the special startup (press channel 1 select button while turning on) and set it for XCTRL, and the appropriate DHCP or static network settings. Then, do a "scan" (on encoder wheel 8) for it to find the X32.
Hello. Please tell me is it possible when working Behringer X Touch with Behringer xr 18 to tap tempo FX Stereo Delay blinking constantly on one of the buttons ? How to configure?
Hi Сергей, I don’t have much experience with the XR series mixers. I’ve only used the X Touch with the X32 and M32 series mixers (like in this video). For what it’s worth, I don’t believe I remember that being possible with the X32/M32 line.

How can i use the x-touch to control the x32 over MIDI, i can't seem to make it work, even though there is clearly an option called " X-TOUCH over MIDI " right above " X-TOUCH over Ethernet ".
Check out the X-Touch manual or the quick start guide that comes with the firmware. It tells you how to hold down one of the channel select buttons to put the X-Touch in X-Control mode and choose MIDI or Network for the connection.
@@SektoRAlee Hm... If you've checked the "X-Touch Over MIDI" box on the X32 and have chosen "Mode:Xctl" and "Ifc:MIDI" on the X-Touch, I'd think it would work. Unfortunately, I don't have MIDI cables lying around to test this with. I've always used an ethernet connection. Are you using 2 MIDI cables? X-Touch OUT to X32 IN and X32 OUT to X-Touch IN?
Hey Joel, there’s nothing to download! It’s all stock. I used the layout PDF that is included with the firmware download, and just used tape to make labels for the controls.
do you think its really worth it to get if you have xr18 and looking for buttons to control it . will i be able to get about 90% of all controls done using xtouch
I'm not aware of a way to do that. Holding "select" on channel 1 while powering on takes you to a menu that, as far as I know, offers every available option you can change or reset.
@@getlostinsound ... So in a X32 compact you can have 24faders (ch 1-16 and DCA; ie) and in a X/M32 you have 32 faders!!!!! I imagine It will work with the new x-touch compact Greate video. Thanks
Phantom control is very buried but you can do it. Press track to go to the gain layer. In there, press and hold the encoder for the channel you want and then press the rec button (just below the scribble strip) on the same channel. You'll get a "P" on the scribble strip to tell you phantom is on .
@@1001lew Thanks! I had forgotten I asked. lol Needed it one day, and figured it had to be there somewhere, but could not find it. Sure wish they's update this with some features people have been asking for. Just direct (or lat least easier) access, to various layers would be huge.
They'll reflect whatever color you have your channels set for on the console. You can change the scribble strips via the console, X-32/M-32 Edit (computer), or X-32/M-32 Mix (tablet). If yours are all set to black or white, you won't see any color.
I hope so, because this is what I want. I want to use the single Xtouch, with my Ipad, (which is always glitchy as hell), So I can select each channel, subgroup, and auxilary for monitors, and physically change it. The reason I use my Xair is because it sounds so damn good, sounds much better than any physical board, as long as it's paired to a good PA. (JBL). I'm going to try the single xtouch, hopefully it works the way I want it.
You need to go through the setup, how is it connected, and how does one go about connecting...it looks like a network cable, but i can't be sure...it is very key before i purchase one that it is in fact networked... Can you confirm
Yes, I have the X-Touch connected directly to the X32 Rack with a CAT5 network cable. I assigned both devices compatible static IP addresses. You could alternatively connect both devices to a router or switch if you want the X32 or M32 to be on a larger network and to be controlled by other wired and wireless devices (tablets, laptops, etc.). You may need to read up on the topic or consult someone with networking experience.
The devices I'm using are the Behringer X32 Rack, the Behringer X-Touch, and a CAT5 network cable. I'll bet you can find pricing online or at your local music store pretty easily.
Yeah, I decided not to focus on getting everything connected in this video, since Behringer already provides info on that. Plus, this video is already 20 minutes long! I used a CAT5 cable to connect the X-Touch directly to the X32 Rack. I set static compatible IP addresses on each device. Most folks would probably connect both devices to a wireless "router", which would automatically give each device an IP address. For more help, I'd consult Behringer's manual or forums, or a friend who is knowledgeable in computer networking.
Yeah, I don't have much of a setup for video production! I was just frustrated in not being able to find anything on the web with this information, so I decided to figure it out and make a video myself. It was late at night - maybe next time I'll bring someone along to hold the camera for me :)
I wish da made 1 fully midi assignable everybody wants that big hollywood mixer board but thats 4 recording live bands an orcs dis thing way over priced!
Okay enough now I need one. It looks like NASA spece shuttle controls. I bet I could use this thing to control NASAs old useless junk. They claim they went to the moon on a rocket controlled by a commodore 64, I say if they had this controller they would go to freaking Orions belt.
