Using the BERNINA Q-Matic - Step by Step Edge to Edge Quilting

#edgetoedge #allover #pantograph
I'm quilting a digital design on my BERNINA Q24 with Q-matic. It IS still edge to edge (or all-over), so very much the type of quilting you'd use for your “couch quilts”.
Computerized work is brand new to me this year, but as I've gotten more comfortable with it, I want to pass on what I'm learning - that's what the Live & Unscripted show is all about after all - sharing knowledge.
Mr Producer has got us all set up so that I can show you a view of my computer screen as I work, along with a very visible red bull's-eye on every button I touch. Suuuuuper easy to see.
I'll be working on the pictured scrappy quilt, and there will still be an emphasis on
- loading
- squaring
- thread choice for a multi-color project
In addition, we'll talk about digital-specific topics
- determining safe zone
- sizing the design to fit the quilt
- advancing and matching up with previous stitching
- and the all-important WHAT TO DO IF YOUR THREAD BREAKS IN THE MIDDLE😂

You are the best! After a long time of the penny not dropping - it finally dropped by watching your tutorial I can now smoothly do my edge to edge quilting on my Q24. You are a wonderful instructor and put all of the steps together beautifully and simply. Thank you so much for the time you have spent teaching the likes of myself - so very much appreciated.

WOW! I’ve had two other brands of long arms and have switched to the Bernina Q20 with QMatic Software. I just completed 3 1/2 hours of training on the new machine and took lots of notes. I loaded the quilt and tried to make sense of my notes and only got so far before I called my dealer twice in one day (bless them - only did one row each time). THEN I watched your video. Logical, reassuring and fun to watch! I can do this, I can do this…. I’ll be recommending your videos to my friends. Thank you so much Susan!

Thank you, Susan. Best tutorial I've seen on RU-vid for Bernina Qmatic. I would love to see more of these. I have Q20 on classic frame with qmatic but have really struggled with it. I have watched this one twice and have already been able to complete two quilts with e2e

I think that your line might be from a jump stitch from stitching multiple rows. When I have multiple rows stitching at the same time I selecting reverse sew for second line so I don’t have to stop and start for each row. I too am learning the Q-matic but I am loving it. 🥰 Looking forward to learning more from you.
@StitchedBySusan

It is a jump stitch, yes. Hopefully by next time I’ll have figured out how not to stitch it😁

Love seeing the Q-matic piece... I've learned lots of little tips! QQ :-) When you're putting the Bernina's side clamp onto the Red-E-Edge clamp, are you using the front Bernina Clamp or the back one? Just curious! Thanks for sharing!
@StitchedBySusan

Usually the back, but not always.

Hi. I’m new to your channel and seeing this on replay. So helpful! Definitely going to try the red snapper system. Also I like that you don’t over-sew on the edges. That’s useful too as my machine is always bumping my side clamps and knocking them off. One quick question - have you ever considered basting the entire quilt before starting? I’ve had mixed success and just wanted to know what your experience is.
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 7 месяцев назад
I have, yes. For general quilting I find it takes more time without giving any better results. Even when I'm doing quilts that "need" it, I tend to baste ahead a row or two, but not all the way to the bottom - does that make sense? It seems like the quilt, when fully basted and rolled up, stretches a smidge, and then I struggle to keep the top from having excess near the bottom. My opinion 😉

Hi Susan - great video, as always. QQ - I have the 72S foot - but where did you purchase the snap on cup with the slit? I am having trouble finding it. Thanks again!
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan Месяц назад
From BERNINA. I believe I ordered it with my machine, but I just Google it now and found it under “cup clip” at various dealers. A side note, feet #74 and 43 work similarly with the cup shape, so if you have one of those, give them a try👍🏻

When importing designs you can create a tag and each design can have multiple tags. I have tags for my downloads and then add tags if it is E2E, border, sashing etc. Hope the helps.
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 8 месяцев назад
Do you tag with designer names then? I’d love to figure this out so I can give credit when I’m showing someone’s design.
@dbanning733
@dbanning733 7 месяцев назад
@@StitchedBySusan You can create the tag and name it whatever you want and each design can have multiple tags. Eg I have one design tagged with Amanda Muphry, My Downloads and sashing.

When starting to stitch each row, how do you program the qmatic to stitch alternate rows to keep the quilt from shifting?
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 5 месяцев назад
First off, I count on the loading/basting/side clamps to keep things from shifting. But I DO alternate directions in stitching out the rows - you can do that with the “reverse sew” button. It flips the start and stop points.
@tammysews
@tammysews 5 месяцев назад
Did you baste the quilt on first? Can you address how to do that now that I newly have Qmatic.
@StitchedBySusan

I basted the top and part of the sides initially, and then continued further down the sides with each pass. I talk through the entire process in the video.
