Using the Canon EOS 40D in 2022
Last week ‪@ChrisBaitson‬ and I headed up to Forge Valley at the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors for a spot of Bird Photography and a little Macro Photography thrown in for good measure.
I bought a used Canon EOS 40D for a little under £70 and paired it with a couple of decent lenses to see what I could get with this 15 year old camera in 2022!

brought this awesome canon EOS 40D 10.1MP digital SLR semi-professional camera 📷 in mint immaculate condition. in official box. been well looked after cared for by it's previous owner someone's dad who used it for taking photo's of orchids. came with 3 batteries + battery covers. battery charger. 2 compact flash cards.USB data cable. new official canon shoulder strap. and official carrying bag + inergrated rain cover. and all accessories plus added extras. very affordable in 2024. built like a tank. this is wot you call a camera. 📸

The 40D was the camera i learned photographic techniques on and has a special place in my heart. Replaced the kit lens with a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and it was a great everyday setup. I'd buy another 40D in a heartbeat.

Yeah a lot of these older DSLRs are well worth revisiting at this point. I think since mirrorless became so popular many people overlook them and their fantastic lens selection. Thanks for watching mate 🖖

I love my 40d, it's my second. Love the heavy solid build. Waterproof and strong magnesium body feel indestructable. Makes more modern cameras feel like they came out of a Christmas cracker!

Yeah there’s no way I’d trust my Sony A7s in the same way I trusted my Nikon d800 in terms of durability. That too was tank-like build quality and I put it through hell over about half a million shutter flaps and it never let me down.

Canon 50D with Canon camera grip i stil have it, bought it in 2011 brand new for portrait studio shot in University for graduating High School students and has produced great images using Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens and Visatek studio lights. For video using Magic Lantern and smart phone for audio and sync it in post productions is way very easy.

I bought my 40D in January 2008. I am still using it (actually it's the only body that I own). Recently I bought Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro and what a pair I have got! No plan to upgrade till the time Getty declines to accept my images from my old workhorse.

I'm using 40D since I bought one, that is since 2009. For me it's not oldie, its just a camera I use. Anyone who considers buying one this days should know, that it makes great photos in descent light 10 MP sensor is really good enought. But in low light, going under 400 ISO, 40D will create visible noise. If high ISO is a must I would consider something "newer" like 7D (mk2). 40D also makes only still photos - no video, that option is available in model 50D.

I just bought a 40D (for $40!) to give to a family member as a Christmas gift, but when I got it and went to test it I kind of fell in love with it myself. I’ve been shooting exclusively on a 5D classic for a year now (after leaving a full RF kit because it didn’t have any of the soul or character I’d from to love with my 5Dii and 5Diii) and the 40D retains tons of the same charm as the 5D as far as the build quality and colors, but it has slightly snappier auto focus, adds live view and auto ISO, and it has a better burst rate. I’ve been loving the dedicated picture style button, as well. I’m totally buying one for myself asap.

I was never really a canon guy since I spent my first 10 years in the game with Nikon, but I genuinely can’t think of a Canon dslr that I’ve used that I didn’t like in some way, even the big clunky 1D mark iii was a lot of fun. Thanks for watching 🖖

Thanks for enjoyable and informative vid. Love taking nature pics and searched vids for best used options for beginners and this Canon was mentioned. There were links to outlets that offer used gear and there's a 40D at about $100. Really nice knowing I could explore and learn about different lenses and techniques without investing a ton on new stuff, and still get awesome images. So yeah, I wouldn't feel too guilty spending about $300 for this body and 2 or 3 used lenses to see how it goes, and glad someone took the time to showcase such an old and cheap budget option.

My Canon 40d working well from 2009. I'm thinking to buy something more modern with twist screen and better ISO range, but ... I so like the 40d's features and results, that I only thinking, and no more. Glad to see that not only me like this model up to day 😊

Buy a dslr! I went from 40d to m50 and it was not pleasant, I’d suggest the 80d, it feels great in the hands but has a better iso and the fully articulating screen

I used a 40D for years, did wedding jobs with it, and all sorts. I only got a 7D because of its bigger 100% viewfinder. Still using the 7D now (thinking of getting a 7D mk2 simply for the better low light performance, having said that the 7D mk1 does the job with a good fast lens on it) also use a compact Lumix LX100 for when i want to travel light and fast.

Todo es muy subjetivo. Como bien dice David, es el lente quien hace la diferencia. Por otra parte el valor tan grande que tienen ciertas cámaras es por su desempeño en condiciones difíciles de luz. Si tenemos condiciones controladas de Luz podemos sacar muy buenas imágenes con esta y casi cualquier cámara, pero si somos muy exigentes y hemos trabajado con por ejemplo una cámara Hasselblad de 100 megapíxeles con ópticas de primer nivel, cualquier nikon canon o sony nos pueden parecer un juguete

I got recently a 50D for Backup camera, so far is a pretty solid tank of camera, very robust in my hand. A really nice camera to have but I need to get more Lens for it, the 40D is very similar in specs except the 5 MP of difference against the 50D, but both cameras can hold on pretty well in 2022 and beyond with proper optics 👌 Thanks for give it a chance to this legendary 40D in those times with mirrorless cams everywhere 👍

I bought one to learn photography after watching Duade’s video on bargain gear. It has a great feel and easy to manipulate controls. If you can fill the frame and keep the iso reasonable the pictures look pretty good.

Same for me. I started with a EOS 700d back in 2014 but was sometimes disappointed with the results. Started wit a SIGMA 18-250 and got a few keepers. Next I bought a f2.8 SIGMA 17-50mm and it changed the way I took photos. Then a few years with not picking up the camera at all. Last year I bought my first 70-200 f2.8 and I realized „oh, so that is what a sharp lens look like“. From that day on I invested in prime lenses and finally got my first FF sensor camera (EOS R6). I absolute understand the basics of photography now and picking up my old 700d grounds me every time. I got a bit into wildlife photography and saw some of Duade Patons videos. His passion and love for his 40d inspired to me to get my own one. I am so excited to pick it up when it arrives. 😊

I've bought the 10D - 50D shortly after release, and still using them. My 30D developed issues after such a long time (2006), so i use the 40D preferred. Still enough, 10 MP, 14-bit RAW, and with 2022+ processing options from current RAW converters, still up to the task. I have gear with 24 MP, fullframe, but i rarely use it. Huge filesize, processing takes much longer with my almost 10 year old quadcore xeon rig, i built into feb. 2013. (16GB since ever then). Still happy with the RAW output. I don't need to shoot 16-24+ MP for my kind of photography.

Yeah it's a shame a lot of these older gems are overlooked in favour of higher mpx. The image quality is awesome and I've had some of my favourite images with things like the 400D/rebel XTi. Thanks for watching mate 🖖

These cameras are, indeed, wonderful and a bargain. One of the nice things about them is that they are substantially heavier than the Nikon equivalent. Weight = stability and durability.

Yeah, the 40d is about 50% heavier than the Nikon d90 and it certainly is noticeable after using Sony mirrorless for the last couple of years. I love the Sony's for what they can do, but I'm fairly certain I could drop kick the 40d and then continue shooting whereas the Sony's would almost certainly explode lol Thanks for watching 🖖

Interesting. Not knowing anything about photography I bought one. It's been excellent, as I just use it for photographing still life products in a basic setup. Interesting here to see what might be possible if I used it more outside. I think I just have the bog standard lens. It does feel very strong the camera which I always like. My tripod is lousy, even any readers could recommend a cheapish decent on used I could search for that would be appreciated. The flower in the video is a crocus.

Thanks for watching. I use 2 different tripod that aren't premium one. One is a Zomei and the other is an Andoer one, both from Amazon. Personally I think the Zomei is of better build quality. There may be a link in the description to the Zomei one. Hope that helps 🖖

Hey , i just got into photography a week ago and i love it - Im just now at the point were i used my smartphone camera for it, but the problem i got with my phone is just that it just takes so many steps from it that makes fun and just ends up not as i want the photo to be, as i learned from many videos i now watched that the best camera doesnt make you an good photographer .but i feel like its just doesnt help me to get "good" at photographing since their are not really much things to adjust. Their are so many things that just makes an picture so wonderful. So i now purchased an Canon 40D with 18-55 is lens as bundle with tripod for 95 euro and cant wait until it arrives so i can start taking better pictures. I go now back learning now more things about ISO , motion blur depth of field , lighting and other things to get better . Thank you so much for that video and you definetly got an new subscriber. I buy my first 40D in 2007, latter I buy about four (4) second hand 40D's. I use the 40D's until 2015. I replace the 40Ds with the 7D. I do weddings, portrait and all king of social events. I love the 40D, is superb. I move fully to full frame in 2019. Definitely the 40D is one of the greatest cameras.

According to many sources on the internet and the seals around the CF card and battery doors it does indeed have weather sealing, but as with all cameras you need a weather sealed lens too or it's pointless

My first digital was the 40d.. the screen didn't work and I ended up getting the dreaded 'er1' error! I worked that camera hard, it went uo to a massive ISO1250!! It was a tough camera. Tough. Bulky, fun, I cut my teeth on this camera. Youre 100% right about the glass. I heard someone say 'you date your bodies but you marry your lenses ' Great video!

I have a 30d and 40d. I love them both. Both Canons were bought last year very cheaply due to a common fault where the front scroll wheel slips. Super easy fix with A cotton bud and meths to clean under the rubber scroll wheel. A few months ago I decided to modernise, wanted to do try Fuji, but ended up buying a Nikon D700, only slightly newer. Totally love the images out of the Nikon but it's so much heavier than the Canons. I love the build quality of these older cameras.

Always loved the colours from the 40D and I still have one but the forefinger dial only works hop and a catch so I dont use it as much as I should

One of the great things about these older cameras is that many of them now are abundant on the used market so if something goes wrong, it’s not terribly expensive to replace them. I also love the look of the 400d (basically a 40d in a rebel body) and 6D files. Thanks for watching, Nigel🖖

Shooting with an old DSLR is still good even in 2022 and even with a cheap 50 mm These old DSLR cameras have been built like Tanks to last many years Me my self I still shoot sometimes with an old Canon 30D and 1000D on the Streets And recently I bought an old Nikon D70S with a cheap Tamron zoom lens to minimal my self more and more I mean it’s only 6 megapixel but i love it Yes why not It has been always and still about the photographer not the gear he is using It will be nice if you can use this Canon 40D on the Streets … Cheers Brother Keep shooting….

I use canon lenses on Sony camera! I've got the 40d, it is a nice and solid camera but in 2022 it doesn't have a good dynamic range. It is good only with easy light situations.

Yeah it's not up to Sony standards with dynamic range but it's actually average for Canon apsc. It's got just about the same DR as the 7d mark ii. In tricky light I bracket everything anyway so I get as much DR as I'll ever need. Thanks for watching 🖖

@@DavidFlowerOfficial They are pretty much the same The 50d has 15 mpx, instead of 10mpx, and a few other changes in firmware, I don't see the 40d much anymore, my Youngest daughter took it to Uni with her, along with my 50mm, She loves it so I think I've lost it😂🥰

I have a 50D the twin of the 40D, with 15 megapixels more between each other. Both cameras are the crop version of the classic Canon 5D full frame cameras. They produce good color resolution and especially beautiful skin tones. They also share the same ficus points on the viewfinder. Made with a magnesium body frame, hence built like a tank. All crop sensor cameras produced by Canon after the 50D were made of a polycarbonate bodies, that were lightweight but not as durable and robust as the previous two mentioned. These are simple and yet very good camera bodies. You will love these classic cameras once you use them.

Hi! Lovedd your review, but, in any way, could you please explain how to export photos from this camera through eos utility? There were no links for me to get the older version of the eos utility for me to even see my photos on my computer/ The 3.0 version is not even compatable for the 40d. Need help ASAP

I don't use the Eos utility. I just have a card reader for both SD and CF and so remove the card and export into my laptop. I've found in the case of canon, Nikon and Sony that it's a much faster transfer via the card reader rather than their respective software. Thanks for watching 🖖

Hello! Great review! I have some questions. So this camera has "Live View" does that mean that if you were gonna use this camera for astrophotography you could see the star live and focus live like viewing a video? Also can it do long exposure for astrophotography? Can it also shoot raw photos? Thanks!

Yeah, live view on this camera is a focusing aid like the live view found on the 20Da, which was designed to help astrophotography. You get the real time image on the screen, but you lose auto focus so you have to dial it in manually. It can do long exposures and yes it shoots Raw and the files look great. Thanks for watching 🖖

I’ve looked into that a little and while it’s said that there are some minor improvements to the sensor, I don’t see any discernible difference between the 40d and 400d images which is why I sold my 40d. My dad gave me his 400d and of course that’s a keeper 🖖

I just picked up a 40D body on Ebay for $80 shipped and literally got it today and I can't put it down. I think the biggest down fall, and something I didn't realize is it takes a CF card and not SD. But, of course they have CF to SD adaptor really cheap so that solves that oversight.

Yeah that’s an unfortunate downside of some of these older cameras. I recently picked up an old Fujifilm that uses XD picture cards and had to Google what that even was since I’ve never seen one 😂 Thanks for watching 🖖

The 40d doesn't have great iso performance so if you're gonna need to go higher than about 800iso, it might not be the best option. You'll get the shots, no doubt, especially with a fast lens, but if you need higher iso than this, it's probably a good idea to look for something else. Thanks for watching 🖖

If it’s your first camera I’d look at a good range zoom to begin with. Canon have the 18-135 STM which is relatively inexpensive on the used market and it’s stabilised. It’s not going to give you the best of the best image quality, but it will give you a wide enough range to find your feet in photography and figure what and how you like to shoot. I hope that helps. Nikon D70 was my first Nikon ever and I really did like it. I owned 2 of them both ended up with broken shutters so I moved on, but Nikon remained my system for about 10 years until I went mirrorless 🖖

Only thing I'd say regarding these older cameras is that while they perform great, many of them use the older CF cards and they're pretty pricey compared to SD cards. The 150-500 is great, but soft wide open at 500mm. Last I looked they were going for between £400-500 used👍 Thanks for watching, mate 🖖

@@amagnier Yeah this is what I have. These adapters are sooo good. I bought a 256gb SD card on sale for $25 and put it in the adapter and it works flawlessly. A 256 CF card would have probably been $100 or more.

Quite possibly. A lot of the older canon dslrs only have a few focus points and in many cases only the centre one is accurate 🖖

Another oldie but goldie camera. Nothing wrong with them as long as they're looked after - the same as any tech. Stuff was built to last decades ago, not like today where manufacturers purposefully make batteries terrible so you buy the newer model, eh Apple?

As a beginner it doesn't really matter since both are awesome tools to get into photography. Both systems have a huge lens line-up that will provide everything you're going to need. The d3000 is tiny and lightweight whereas the 40d is built like a pro full frame camera with some rudimentary weather sealing. I think this is probably the only area that will matter as the Nikon is about 480g Vs the canon at 750g. I've owned both and thought they were great so I'd just say go with your gut, both will produce great images

If you mean the Nikon D200, I couldn’t say because I’ve never used one. I went straight from the d70 and d3000 to the d600 when it came to upgrading. I’m wondering if it might be time to add a couple of Nikon dslrs to the collection 🤔

I used Nikon for about a decade and when I switched to mirrorless I went all in so I currently have no Nikon dslrs. Absolutely agree with you about the 5d, I have the mark one and it’s quite a tank lol

And as every day camera it is way to tanky. I want a simple enjoyable old DSLR.. so would you agree if I say I better change the 5d for a 400d (perfect condition) and have my Tamron 17-50 2.8? I think it's much easier to have a FF in an A7 body:) I take every advice!

@@FlorenciaE Well I always shoot raw if the camera allows it so the files are unaffected by colour science and I still haven't gotten myself a 5d classic (it's on the list😁) so I can't compare the jpegs. One comparison I can make though is between Sony and Canon colours in videos. Canon is warmer and much more pleasing straight from the camera whereas Sony tends to be a bit green and I have to tweak it in post.
