This event took place at St Pancras Church House on 13 January 2024. Keval Bharadia’s talk was followed by comments from panellists Daisy Pearson and Tyrone Scott and a Q&A with the audience, facilitated by Rob Callender.
Daisy Pearson is Campaigns and Activism Officer, Global Justice Now.
Tyrone Scott is Senior Movement Building and Activism Officer, War on Want.
Keval Bharadia is a political economist and activist with a 15-year career at the London Stock Exchange.
Rob Callender is from Extinction Rebellion.
Each day, around £12.6 trillion pounds worth of trading goes through the global financial and commodity markets. Just a 1% tax on this trading would raise £12.6 billion each day. This is enough to end poverty, hunger and destitution overnight. It is enough to build a loss and damage fund, finance a just transition and wipe out global south debts in a week.
For a more detailed account of the financial markets, what a financial transaction tax (FTT) could look like, and recent history of the FTT, see labourhub.org.uk/2023/05/25/h...

I agree. He needs to be. Incremental change will not suffice. Only revolution will do, and at that only continuous and ongoing non-violent disobedience that's a high cost to the kleptocrats.

Keval is so interesting. I'm 60 now. Worked on low pay for 44 years. I wish people would watch and learn what people like Keval have to say. Education is a funny thing. I'm not sure if I've been educated properly, at school and the people around me.

Keval Bharadia, what a guy! What a video! Great to hear from a financial insider with an actual conscience. Exposing the corporate, ruling class onslaught is so important.

Thanks all 4 of you especially Keval. Please can I remind you that the system cannot be changed from inside. It's essential to have an overview and not to be siloed. But corporate-political-financial-banking knows no boundaries and it and its key players form the Rules Based Order (not international law btw) and they use legal jurisdiction, national legislation and treaty law, accounting practice, banking practice and international fora of which there are many, together with payment-settlement systems, tax havens, which all out of necessity must be regulated, nationalised, or done away with. When we talk of system change, I think many don't comprehend what's being discussed. After more than 2 decades in institutional banking across the whole shebang internationally and seeing and being involved things not many would have the dubious privilege of seeing, I would emphasise this multi layered global system cannot be changed from the inside. It has to be the key countries that do the changing and it will I believe start with 10 or 20 thousand dedicated environment protectors on the street for a month or more non-stop with unbending demands in each of these key nations jurisdictions. I'm sorry to remind you the hyper-privileged will resort to mayhem and likely murder-killing of honest, caring and courageous environmental protectors around the globe, as they do in the global south at the present time. We see the early beginnings in the UK with the present so-called gov't (and what political opposition is there, none). Thanks

Can you help me see I see this being unexpected by a few but now if I can talk to Saudi Arabia about using what we got and where we are now giving new ways with solar cities minimal change jobs income future that's a win now look I got uses for waste with jobs business in plan also net zero houses too but not sure where or what to do now this will bring more change together without standing on the streets see how much to be done 👊

Great insight from Keval - he so gently, but clearly and powerfully, points to all of the places where wealth is being directed away from the poor and concentrated into the hands of a very few. Not just the concentration of wealth, but the methods of extraction and exploitation, that enables that. This is the knowledge that all of us fighting for life on earth need to possess. We have to be aware of all of the nodes where our futures are being decided. It is clear from the talk that there are far more emergencies than climate, and if we cannot tackle the financial institutions, the debt economy, and begin to plan for a post-growth (regrowth) economy, then there will be no way of preventing truly devastating consequences upon the atmosphere, biosphere, and the ability of humans to live in cooperative civilisations. Thanks for putting this on. I would love to explore these ideas further, particularly how reparations can be used for rapid and fundamental redistribution of the stolen wealth.

To tackle climate change, this MUST stop being an infinite growth 'system' and the only way to do that would be to make it financially worthwhile for people to SHARE the jobs we would democratically agree we do NEED to have done and work much less. All the time we have a system that demands growth in order to 'work' it's impossible.

Look so I got an idea for saving major paper as in the royal mail So if every house had a digital mailbox it would be as easy as setting up on your tv and all mail sent digitally if needed personal installation of said mailbox see this is long hard and tackling major issues but with everyone working same overall endgame but as individuals if we all know how we gonna play out our strategic plan we can achieve anything

Another comment please. What do the panel "imagine" Capitalism will morph into? A weak form of Capitalism like perhaps Keynesianism? Or techno-feudalism per Varoufakis? Or what about a unit of exchange based on the health of key ecosystem characteristics like water quality and air. Biome and soil health, the level of CO2 (e) species variability and health-numbers and so on. I have to ask what do the panel members imagine money is other than exchange? Does speculation have a role and what about labour? Where does deliberative democracy fit in? These are some of the concepts we have to grasp and fine-tune as we go. Business loves certainty it's where profits, what does that mean, are easy to key in. Thanks again

So ask me anything if you want to see we changing up and bringing in a new picture of a global warming being beaten back whilst we take hunger poverty then kick it in the sack but now here where we innovate and create our future no protests needed with us as 1 people with ultimate goal now we all make it happen

Sorry guys, but 400 years ago you had to wake up , work for your Lord without benefit of a paycheque. Things are not worse now.
@observerboutique
@observerboutique 5 месяцев назад
400 years ago we would work for a lord, have a house, work around 8 hours Monday/Tuesday to Saturday, 8 of those hours including like 2 hours of napping, and another 3-4 hours of seperated breaks. This is excluding winter months. food was provided which was a massive cost at the time. Money was paid at the end of the week and we didn't have much to spend on, other than leisure and repairs. Now we work with half an hour breaks, much less holidays, working way way harder, usually nothing external provided by the company, no say, no workplace culture other than what the company allows. I'm not excusing feudalism but you can't say that our current system is objectively better.

@christianzilla
@christianzilla 5 месяцев назад
@@bruceparker805 True. Can't argue with that. In real terms I think we collectively have had our chance. Nobody is ready for what is just around the corner. Grimdark, fascist bunker countries, huge shifts in the rainwater patterns and climate catastrophe, mass starvation and resultant migration on an unprecedented, global scale, possible resource-based nuclear conflicts, etc.

@@christianzilla That I am not at all bought into but sounds like you are very sure. I am a phycisist computer modeler (so what! haha) and I am very clear that computer models are great for generating hypotheses and bad at testing them and making accurate predictions. 10-20 years to 4 degrees and a tipping point reached? Yes on the planet in the model but no certainty at all of that on the planet in reality. We are doing the best we can as a collective all things considered and that may be enough. Positive change is coming too. We may have much more time to get it right and if so then we will.
