Fun to finally take a look at a Nexus phone, this was one of the more requested reviews I've seen recently! 6P video coming soon, and hopefully we'll get through the other Nexus models as well :) Also, I've realized I may have one of the Nexus 5X models that had a yellow tint to the display, as in any shot beside the 6P you can see it's definitely not as white. There is a software setting to make the color cooler, and back in the day Google offered exchanges for a new device- I'm not at all concerned given I'm just using this phone for review. Kinda interesting though.

Do a mi mix 1 review with a 4.4 kernal custom rom (found on the mi mix 1 telegram group). This legendary phone still gave me 5-6 hours of sot on a 5 year old battery with a custom pixel rom. And you're not gonna find a better, more premium phone than this other than the essential phone.

This time for Android, 2015/Marshmallow era and the surrounding times were among my favorite experiences with Android. It was so fun and experimental with stuff like Skrillex's live case where it showed you different constellation images for your wallpaper all the time. Stuff like that made Android so much fun to use and mess around with. I miss it 😢

Yeah so many features Google added to vanilla Android came from custom ROMs. I was a flashaholic back then 😂🤣😅

I was a big fan of Android phones for that reason. Even in the early days, it was great nerd fun to install custom roms on my Android phones etc. The only reason I moved to iPhone is that Android got too good so the experimental stuff started to go away and there was no sense installing custom roms etc because the stock roms ran fine. I still think about switching back but I am pretty heavily in the Apple ecosystem.

I used a Nexus 5X from release year to 2020. In 2017 I had it replaced by LG bc it went into bootloop. The bootloop on these and some LG phones is not actually software related. What happens is under heavy use or use in pressurized environments (like a plane) the phone will overheat to the point you can no longer hold it. This heat is often enough to weaken the GPU to the point it can become close enough where a tiny bump well break the GPU in half. If you leave the phone in the freezer overnight there is a chance you can get a few minutes with it before it loops again to get any data you want to save.

I used to own a Nexus 5X, because of how simple it is to use as well as affordable, given a choice to get either this phone or the Oneplus One. I've used this phone for years throughout high school until sadly, mines suffered the bootloop death, like with other LG-made phones at the time. It can only boot up as far as the Google logo before abruptly shutting down, never to be turn back on again, even when charging. It is considered one of the best phones I've had of all time. Also, the notification LED is located on the bottom grille, where the speaker is.

I don't believe in the existence of any original Nexus 5X'es that haven't developed the bootloop issue... it's a design defect, so it should be present in 100% of these smartphones. Unless the user lives in Siberia, Alaska or Greenland and the phone never overheats. I'm still using an original 5X but with most of the CPU cores disabled. It's terribly slow and has low RAM. But the camera is so good! Edit: it's rumored that LG released a late batch of fixed motherboards but I don't believe it because mine has no RPMB (removed by LG to prevent... unlocking the bootloader).

1st phone was the OG Samsung Galaxy. Nice phone but the software experience was a huge letdown. Switched to a Nexus 5 (exceptional phone for the price), then moved onto a Nexus 5X (again, exceptional phone for the price) and am now on a Pixel 3. Stock vanilla Android is the best version of Android. It's a real shame the Nexus and Pixel lines don't do better sales. The Nexus 5X is still seeing action. Lent it to the GFs cousin while he was in country and gave it away to a neighbour for their senior father in law.

Ok I know I may get some backlash for this but hear me out. Yes the phone is running Android 8.1.0 but with android it's not just the version that matters its the app support. Yes it is out of date but like 90-95% of apps (if not more) still support android 8. Meaning despite everything else this phone can still technically be used. Android 4.4.4 is now only just getting the boot from app developers so 8.1.0 has a long way to go yet
@91Tech
@91Tech 3 года назад
So I agree and disagree- on one hand, yes, Android is very good with having app support for a wide array of phones on so many versions, but it's more out of necessity than anything else. Many even brand new devices (typically budget oriented) are coming out on extremely old versions, many tablets are stuck on Android 6, and if they required newer versions they'd be isolating a huge portion of the potential userbase. The Nexus 5X hasn't gotten security updates since 2018, which isn't good, and if Androids as a whole got the kind of updates iPhones did you wouldn't need to have app support all the way back to Android 5 and whatnot. That being said, even with an old version Android can still be pretty usable in a modern setting, just often with an older UI and lacking features we have today. I certainly prefer the Apple route but it's fair to feel Android isn't as bad as I might make it seem when talking about updates.

In my opinion (if it survived until today) the 2GB of RAM is the biggest issue today. Multitasking is simply not happening and it even struggles a lot with larger apps. The very similar LG G4 with the same chip is much faster in day to day.
@bernielomax4702
@bernielomax4702 Год назад
The snapdragon 808 wasn’t a budget or midrange chip. It was a flagship chip it just was a year older than the 810 used in the 6P. The 5x was a cheaper option due to using previous year hardware. Also they’re expensive in resale because they’re the last Nexus phones and nexus phones have a huge cult following in the android community. Since the creation of the Pixel line there doesn’t really exist a “stock android” anymore as android is built around the Pixel and it’s incredibly custom launcher.

I loved my Nexus 5 and custom ROMed the hell out of it. Back when Google was Dev friendly and had unlocked bootloaders. Sadly those days are over and pixels are much harder to customise. The latest Android version made twrp much harder to run on the phones but those clever Devs got around that. Then root would break Google pay so magisk had to fix that too. It's really disappointing given Google stole many custom ROM features for vanilla Android so they should just let people experiment with custom ROMs on THEIR phones. Whose it harming?

15:17 People always mention how phones should get more Android version updates, but I disagree. As someone who just downgraded their phone from Android 11 to Android 9 because of 11 bringing my phone to its' knees, newer =/= better. I also have a lot of friends who outright refuse to update and, compared to their phones WITH the updates, the update-less ones run way better, maybe with like a couple exceptions at most. Not to mention the increase of RAM and storage requirements. Personally, I would take a stable Oreo over a Pie or 10 any day of the week.(this is Google however, they'd probably do a decent enough update, but I'm talking about phones in general)

Still running this as my only phone, works fine although I got the free BLOD repair a few years ago. Running LineageOS 17.1 (Android 10) and it's faster and smoother than Android 8. Google should be ashamed at how they stop updating their phones and leave the security vulnerabilities. It's not in their interest seeing they just want to sell more phones, but I refuse to landfill a perfectly decent phone. Yeah it's not the fastest, and yes the camera is just about OK, but I don't play games on my phone and I'm not a pro photographer or care to be. How many times could I have upgraded since 2015? Several. But what would I get, mostly just another phone to landfill and replace. I'm no Luddite, I work in tech, but the short lived nature of phones drives me nuts, it's so wasteful. This phone has been great for me, I'll drag its life out til it goes no longer.

I really hated the fact that Google took away a feature the phone had at launch and was advertised in the material sheet ( Night mode ). It was decided to make night mode a Pixel exclusive. When people came up with workarounds to turn on a feature the phone had at launch and was part of the OS. Google then made a series of security patches that patched out all the workarounds. Overall it was an ok experience and the phone lasted 4 and a half years in my use. I now use a Samsung A72 that cost almost the same as my nexus did and man has phone technology come forward a lot

I used the nexus 5x back in 2019 and it was an ok phone but died on me after 6 months. Reason, is that I bought it for 100 bucks on ebay, they sold me a refurbished one that died soon. But overall It was neat, it had the colorful leds that I really miss for notifications. Arguably one of the better phones i've ever owned. that was my first vanilla android phone and even if it was plastic, my friends were always telling me that the phone looked really cool, compared to samsung or lg back in 2019. I own a motorola one now, and it's a nice phone, but I still miss the feeling of the 5x and the leds for the notifications.

Nexus 4 was the 4th Nexus after Nexus 1, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus.. nothing confusing.

I had this phone when it came out. I had it for one year untill it got the bootloop issue and stopped working. It was an amazing phone back then and really loved it. LG really ruined their brand by making faulty phones.

I had this phone for 3 days before I dropped it in a puddle in concrete while getting in my car. I drove away before noticing and went back and found it. It turned on but didn't work.
