Using the Land to Build a Log Framed Firewood Shelter - Off Grid in Alaska┃EP5┃Just Gettin' Started

In this episode I begin collecting resources and building my first structure, a log framed woodshed, using timber from my land! We attempt the Yakisugi method for log preservation, discover wild blueberries, and battle public enemy #1....SEASONAL ALLERGIES 🤧😤
Special thank you to www.joepanella... for the awesome logo design! Go check out his website - if you hire him you won't be disappointed!
If you're new here, my name is Sean Paul!
I sold everything I owned and drove to Alaska. I came with my dog, my cat, and a dream to create an off grid sanctuary on 5 acres of Alaskan wilderness. The challenge is, I have zero experience and I’m just a dreamer with a RU-vid subscription! I can only imagine the journey ahead... I hope you stick around, and welcome, to Gettin' Off Grid!

@@Juliathi-hf7fw He is not the first RU-vidr to build a cabin in Alaska. For example, there is a channel Betting On Alaska by son of Girl In The Woods and Bushradikal. @Juliathi-hf7fw
@Juliathi-hf7fw Месяц назад
@@desk.jockey Firstly, the age difference is notable. Mick has exhibited a level of arrogance from the start, which contrasts with Sean Paul's more humble demeanor. While Sean Paul is still learning and often does his research, Mick's upbringing...having been raised by a father who built houses...should have provided him with a foundational understanding of construction. He could have easily sought advice from his father or utilized available resources to improve his knowledge. Moreover, Mick moved to Alaska late in the season and took breaks to have fun with friends, which raised questions about his commitment to his building project, especially with winter approaching at the time. While enjoying life is important, it seems imprudent to take extended breaks during such a critical time. Additionally, there have been instances where Mick's honesty has been called into question. Initially, he claimed he was moving to Alaska alone, relying solely on his own knowledge. However, it later became apparent that he received help from his parents and friends, which contradicts his earlier statements. In contrast, Sean Paul is genuine and relatable. He acknowledges his ups and downs, and his current pace allows him to work more steadily. Unlike Mick, he does not pretend to have all the answers, making it unfair to compare their situations directly. Ultimately, while both creators share the platform of RU-vid and a connection to Alaska, their circumstances, ages, and personalities are vastly different. Sean Paul's consistency in video uploads further distinguishes him from Mick, who has had a more erratic posting schedule and got bored easily (he said that). While Mick has potential, Sean Paul resonates more with his audience, and he continues to earn our support as long as he remains true to himself. Sorry for writing so much I just wanted to tell you why I think how I think.

I don't know about others, but what I appreciate about you-and what keeps me watching every second of your videos-is your determination to make your dream come true. You are funny and modest, and I love that you are genuine. You share both your successes and your mistakes, which makes you relatable. While many RU-vidrs in similar niches can come off as fake, showcasing fancy tools and elaborate setups without any real-life experience (from what they say), you stand out. You’re not afraid to Google how to do something (and show us you are doing it), and you actively read our comments to find solutions to problems. This authenticity allows many of us to connect with you and feel like we’re living through your journey. Please never change! You will achieve many things and face failures along the way. Your views may fluctuate, and you'll receive both kind words and criticism from those who may not understand you. However, the people who truly care about you will appreciate you for who you are, for what you do, and for how you do it. Never forget that!

Looks like you don’t have many rocks around so keep the ones you find because they will come in handy down the road. Also, your soil looks really good. There should be enough time left in the growing season to plant potatoes, carrots and onions. These will keep well during the winter. Build a cold storage box in the ground. Dig down about 4 feet approximately (or more if you want bigger storage). Line it with wood( get scraps from the lumber yard if one is close) apply garden/yard fabric so it can breathe. Put a good lid on it with a bear proof lock. Cover it with moss and it will keep your food cold. You can even put ice in and it will keep it. This what they used before refrigeration. Trust me…..you will be so happy to have those vegetables for a nice hot stew in the winter! Plus you will have food on hand in case you ever get snowed in. Be sure to fence in around your garden if you put one in as the deer and moose will eat everything. It should only take you a day to make the garden and a day to build the food storage. By taking just a bit of time it will be so beneficial to you down the road! PS……stew is really easy to make! If you want I can tell you how! Hot bowl of stew when it is -40 out warms the bones!!

Hey from Australia dude! Tip for your next log building - Measure/mark your notches on the horizontal roof beams on the floor, next to the bottom of the charred vertical beams first, this way you'll save a few needless lifts to them mark it overhead (your back will thank you) It will also force the vertical beams to be level from bottom to top! When you drill in your fasteners (10 inch screws) don't go 100% vertical, try both on opposing angles, like a slight X shape that will lock the beam in Loving the videos mate! I'll also caveat this with the fact that IV never built a log firewood storage, so feel free to discount the tips, your doing awsome.

*Sean, Shawn James just dropped a video on his channel My Self Reliance titled How To Preserve Wood With Fire (I'm sure you know of him) goes into detail about the char method used on wood for building, he even uses it on his roof its gorgeous, it will help you A LOT (and all of us) the proper way to do it & why, I definitely recommend watching it (only a few minutes long) as soon as you can & before you build more as you may want to make some changes, depending on how long you want your structures to stand when using the char method. I know.. why didn't he make the video weeks ago..😖 You're really doing great especially for this being your first time!! Glad you found your orange work helmet that fell off your quad into the fern!! 😅 Excellent job so far on your wood shed!! One thing most people don’t think about or know but with sthil and husqavarna in the carburetor cover there is a tab that has a sun or snowflake you flip it around depending on season if you bout that saw used or possible new in Alaska they could have it set for winter mode and your carb is starving for cooler air. In winter mode the heat of the engine will make it run better in the cold winter months… also when it does get cold may want to use a thick engine oil instead of bar oil cause bar oil turns into molasses in the winter and will not lubricate your bar and chain properly…

Good start! I was kind of confused by a wood shed but when you think of the cold and snow to come it makes sense. Just hurry up so you can finish before the snow flies. PS, My Daughter and former husband was stationed at Fort Campbell when they were in the Army. You will make it!

AYE Shawn Paul, loving your progress and antics . Congratulations on the growth of your channel, you deserve it . Buddy , with the amount of chainsaw work and tree felling ahead of you , I can think of 5 or more reasons why you have to study up on controlled tree felling , knotches, hinges , plunge cuts will put trees on ground where you want them to go. And always always have 2 exits planned ahead before you drop the tree . There are hundreds of RU-vid vids covering this , and my comment comes from the need to keep you safe , sorry for the ramble but your good people , very entertaining and honest . Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 . Much ❤ to puddy n puppy .

I come away from these videos with an ache in my hands to do something myself. Thank you for showing it's possible to learn as you go - it's something I really need to take to heart more. Please be careful not to hurt yourself! That ladder gives me major angst 😂

Get a log cart for your fourwheeler to move the logs, not sure of the technical name of it but you shouldn't have a problem finding one up there, just ask some of the people that work at the lumber yard

I hope you have good friends to stay with over the winter. It is harsh in Alaska. Just a regular tent will not suffice.

I was thinking that as well, I mean, he could build the shed And then, if there’s room, relocate his tent and platform in the shed, stack logs up around the inside walls and build a lean too on the outside walls for more logs, I would imagine that would keep him quite insulated, but he’d have to be super careful if he’s going to have a log burner in the tent, or, just go hell for leather, build the shed into a tiny cabin, put a floor in, insulate the hell out of it and winter in there,if that’s even possible🤷🏻‍♀️. I love his channel and his energy, but I’m already worrying about the dog and cat in the run up to winter with bears and then the sheer savagery of winter itself!

For the stuck tree, you can use the strap at the bottom and drag it with your ATV. It will make it fall easier.
