Is the Nikon D40X a 10 megapixel camera from 2007 still capable of producing usable images in 2019? Find out in my latest video exploring the capabilities of cheap retro digital cameras in today's world of high ISO and high mega pixel beasts.

I'm still using mine in 2023. I bought it in 2010. CCD sensor cameras are all the rage now. I use it alongside my original Ricoh digital camera from 2005. It has 8.1 megapixels in it's CCD sensor.

I bought one a few days ago for EUR 100, including two objectives, and it is in perfect condition. When I made the first pics, I noticed that it is very easy to handle, and the auto focus works really good. With the 50-200 objective, I got some really nice close-up shots of leaves and flowers, although I never used a DSLR before. This camera is a good choice if you do not need to print your pictures as large posters.

Glad you found it helpful - just take care if you buy lenses as without the built-in AF motor in the cam, non-G lenses that say they're AF (like the older AF-D) won't autofocus on the entry level Nikons (after the D50 at least).

Got one as a hand me down, it gets the job done nicely, especially with a non-kit lens.

Yeah, as I said in another reply, the 35mm f/1.8 DX Nikkor lens is great on this cam. And yeah, no video until the D3300 (which has fairly good video actually), but few cameras this age had that and wasn't great quality when they did.

My only gripe with the camera is the lack of video recording, but I can't really complain, can I?

Ironically enough I took one of these out on a cloudy day in 2019 and came home with nearly four hundred photos taken with the help of the 55-250mm lens.

Whilst they're not the most solidly built cam compared to something like a D3, I'd still expect them to work so long as you have kept them outside in a leaking shed :D

Hi I got a question. When you showed the awesome photos, there were always two of them. The 2nd is better than the first. What were the two photos?

The first one is the out of camera raw and the second is the out of Lightroom processed raw file. So same photo, just with a little polish :)

@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 3 года назад
For free absolute - stick the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G lens on it and you'll get some nice results. Is it as good as the modern new releases like the Z6/Z7, no of course not - use it within the limits and don't expect that same kind ISO and dynamic range performance and you'll still get some cracking shots with it.

Do you have a recommendation for a compatible portrait lens?
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 2 года назад
You will need a lens wih a built in motor, so for classic headshot portraits, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G will work great (the older D lenses won't autofocus, so avoid those).

Hi, mostly using Sony Vegas as I'm used to the quirks and UI (ver 13 I think it is off the top of my head), but some titling is done in Pinnacle Studio 23 and the 3D titles I rendered in Blender.

While putting this on youtube(videos)Is the camera quality any good?
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 2 года назад
Not quite sure what you're asking - if you're asking about whether the Nikon D40X video quality is any good, well no it isn't, it doesn't have any. If you're talking about build quality, it's plastic, but durable but you wouldn't want to use it in bad weather. If you're talking about image quality, then it will depend on your use case and the price you pay for it - it's still a perfectly capable camera, but new cameras will have better DR and noise control - you'll just pay more for that.

Do you know how to transfer the photos to your computer?
@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 3 года назад
The connector on the camera is a USB Mini - so a USB cable to whatever you have available on your computer, likely USB Type-A or Type-C if more recent. Plug it in and turn the camera on. Or just take the memory card out and put it in an SD card reader.

@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 3 года назад
If you're looking for camera tutorials, I'd take a look at Tony & Chelsea Northrup's RU-vid channel, whilst he hasn't specifically covered this camera, the basics are very similar to the D3200/3300 and all DSLRs (all cameras really) work around the concept of an "Exposure Triangle", Tony has plenty of other interesting camera tutorials too ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fmWBW8aZSS0.html

I've taken mine out of mothballs recently I was my first DSLR camera and I totally disagree with you about it being 'Plasticy ' I've now coupled it with a 35mm f1.8 lens and hope to do a project with it I've moved on to more advanced cameras of course However it's in mint condition and I still have the kit 18-55 lens which didn't have VR and I won't sell it, I'd get f..... all price wise anyhow 📷👍 Ps: the best thing about it is, it doesn't do video, which we're all paying through the nose for, even though we as photographers do need on our cameras 😱

@MartyGreenwell
@MartyGreenwell 2 года назад
On the D40X cam you mean? You can't it doesn't have video. First Nikon cam with video was the D90. The first Nikon with this form factor with video was the D3100 - so if that's the feature you're after, this cam isn't for you.
