Shear is definitely an underused and useful tool to learn. But a more flexible way to do this exact task is to duplicate the window frame, convert to curve, make a profile curve for the moulding, and then use it in the Geometry / Bevel section of the window frame curve as the object. It does all the lining up and shearing, and even better, it's totally non-destructive; you can still change both curves, which also means this is super useful when you have a bunch of windows in a similar style but want some variation in their shapes and size. That's really why I liked working with curves -- I can keep changing things as long as I can keep them live. Good tutorial though! Different workflows are always interesting, never know when one might come in handy. I've subscribed; I like your way of explaining things; all the necessary explanations, not a lot of faffing about, and some interesting and unusual stuff.

I generally agree for complex shapes and curves but I'm not sure how user friendly it is. And I would say takes more time for say a quick 90 degree turn. Thanks so much for subbing and I hope there will be other things you find helpful. We do play around with Geometry Nodes as well which I get the feeling you will like 👍🏻

Nice, was very helpful...although: whats really giving me the sheer (hehe) nervous breakdown everytime, is figuring out on which axis I want to shear. This gizmo made it a bit easier to understand an maybe it's just me, but it looked to easy to me on those particular parts of the video.
@ArtisansofVaul

Without the gizmo it feels very challenging to use it as a tool. You can use the shortcut to activate the tool but it doesnt show the gizmo so I just never use it that way.

This would have save me some headaches in the past would I had known about it... Thanks for the video! (and just in case you want to save a few steps for extruding: extrude -> escape -> g -> x = extrude -> x, maybe you already know, and it was for teaching purposes, but just in case)

Great comment. I am aware and wanted to make the teaching point about if you press escape (its an issue I have seen a couple of times in the last few weeks when people have asked me for help on a mesh). But at the same time when I did it the second time I should have said this as a different learning point 👍
@robertwells4729
@robertwells4729 2 года назад
Edge constrained transform also is good for this in the paid version of machine tools it allow you to shear using degrees. Using mirror can also help if you create a plane the same size as the window and mirror across this you can eliminate modelling the other side and mirror can merge the mesh at the join.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
Yeah the paid version adds such an amazing tool set if you know where all the little bits are hidden. Like using the edge constraint tool to allow you too match a surface face to another object is amazing.

@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
@@Hurtone I haven't. At the moment from what I have seen the limit of only working on one object at a time and nothing too complex is a little frustrating for the price. Also I want to control where the damage occurs to make it easier to merge together. But for something quick Im sure the tool is great.
@robertwells4729
@robertwells4729 2 года назад
One good thing regarding the OCD tool is being able to quickly add minor damage on secondary objects. You can spend as long as you like manually adding detail to the elements that matter. As far as I can see the OCD tool now supports multiple objects.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
@@robertwells4729 I have actually bought and tried OCD since making this. I havent made a video on it because to be honest I wasn't that impressed. I mean it works... but its slow and the results I've had with it aren't great as you don't have enough control over the scaling. I prefer doing it manually or the similar tool I have made myself using Geometry Nodes that you have much more control of (you can find the video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lSrG6mYgk5Q.html ). It only creates damage on the edges of the objects but it's faster and free. If OCD gets the ability to control a bit more I'll come back to it at some point but until then it has.... issues....

@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Год назад
Hi there. You need to then move your mouse away or towards the object. If this isn't working once you have confirmed the bevel but before anything else has been clicked just go to the information box in the bottom left corner and change the "shape" value.

I have a weird question and this video provides a good example of what I am trying to describe. Every time I print out one of my projects I get a hairline extrusion across the model at the layer where a boolean ended and I have no idea what to search to even learn about this. I know it is something I am doing wrong because other people's models print out without the line. Using your model as an example, when I cut out the window using a cube/boolean the wireframe looks perfect in Blender. When printed I get a layer line across the bottom and top of the window edge that wraps around the whole model, it looks like a bad Z-hop but it is only where the boolean stopped and started. There are no errors in the 3D toolkit, so not like a thin face trying to print. Putting a border around the cutout like this video did not help. Any tips on where to search or what would be appreciated but if not, no worries.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 года назад
Hmm... That is weird. I don't think that's an issue with what you're doing in Blender but instead it sounds like an issue with its positioning for printing. I'm guessing are you printing it either the window frame parallel to the printer bed? It could be caused by a big change in the suction as its lifted from the FEP suddenly changing. You might want to try angling the part so that the window frame has one of its corners towards the bed. I'm not sure if I've described that clearly. But that should only happen on a big change so I'm curious if it happens for everything. If you're on Instagram feel free to find me there and drop me a message so you can share some photos.
@RoseKindred
@RoseKindred 2 года назад
@@ArtisansofVaul YT didn't notify me. If I get back on socials I may take you up on that. I am using an FDM right now, so no suction force (although that is good advice you gave for resin) It is the weirdest problem, the cutouts are creating a hairline across the whole layer. I thought it would be the Z-screw messing up but when I compared all the models and projects I have printed it is at different heights. Even simple things like a remote holder (basically a rectangle with cutouts) it occurs yet a statue someone else modeled printed perfectly to roughly 150mm high. Oh well. Joys of 3D modeling/printing I guess. Thanks for the help anyways.
