Using the Sika Self-Leveling Pro Select Polyurethane Sealant to seal up a joint between a red brick masonry step/landing/sidewall and an exterior wall. Explaining the basics of the product, coverage, cure time, cutting, trimming, and cleanup.
All flashing already installed and this sealant is bridging a construction expansion joint to shed future rain water downslope. The sealant will not be visible on the final finished product because it will be covered by additional copper flashing. This stuff is very running and wants to travel downhill so beware of that because that's how it is designed to function. Cleanup is messy, there are probably other products that work better for cleanup than the one shown in the video - like xylene.
Use a smoothie straw to get caulk or sealant from the caulk tube as an extension into tight spots.

Official Product Description:
A Self Leveling sealant with an accelerated curing capacity for sealing horizontal expansion joints in concrete. No tooling required, levels itself; Able to bridge gaps up to 1.5 in. wide; Flexible and durable; Paintable, stainable and sandable; Water immersible & waterproof after cure. [Note: We're skeptical of the "sandable" part because it's so gummy.]

Nice work. It's nice to see someone who actually cares about the outcome of their work.

Pro tip, use blue painters tape to form a clean line, put on the sealer a little heavy, let it sit to see if more is needed due to settling etc. Drag a thin piece of aluminum flashing over the sealer to remove any excess, wait 15 mins and peel the tape off. Clean AF every time !

Can I paint over Sikaflex Construction Sealant? Posted April 24, 2023 by Sika Expert Sikaflex Construction Sealant and all of the Sikaflex polyurethane sealants are paintable after cure. Curing typically takes 5 to 7 days, depending on temperature and humidity. Sika has found that oil, water, and rubber based paints work best, however, we always recommend testing a small, inconspicuous area for compatibility. Avoid using paints that are silicone-based paints or have a high solvent content. Consult the paint manufacturer for compatibility recommendations.

So I overfilled cracks on my floor with the expectation it would self level and sink in completely, I was correct, because of this, in some areas, there are raised potions and the substance is rubbery almost, I was anticipating I could go through with a grinder and grind it level, but I am now questioning if I did this right, how do I level this stuff post-cure? Is the only way razoring it off?

Let's see if there are other suggestions but yes, a sharp razor would be the best way.

What was at the bottom of your joint?
@lewisvanalstyne703
@lewisvanalstyne703 Год назад
We added a foam backer rod and actually put some white sand on top of that because it was a deep joint. So the Sika is sitting on sand but is bonded to both sides.
@genecarden780
@genecarden780 Год назад
@@lewisvanalstyne703 You should have used the correct size backer rod. Or at the very least put the sand first and the backer rod directly under the sealant. Putting the sealant on top of sand will cause it to fail prematurely. The backer rod gives the sealant the proper profile to perform correctly. This is critical to long sealant life.If it is installed correctly Sika sealant should last 20+ years.

@@genecarden780 Sika actually says you can put it directly over sand
@genecarden780
@genecarden780 Год назад
@@ada-yw1bb really? I have installed sealant professionally for over forty years. Sealant will fail prematurely if installed over sand. And it will void the warranty.( totally useless for the homeowner because 99 out of 100 will install it wrong voiding the warranty anyway) I have removed and reinstalled miles of sealant that failed because it was installed over sand. Here is the simple answer for consumers. Directly from Sika “ SITE PREP & PROCEDURE 1. Make sure that all surfaces are clean, structurally sound, dry and free from grease. Remove all dirt, oil, moisture,and/or 2. Widen crack using a chisel and hammer to at least 1/4” and use wire brush to clean out debris. If crack depth exceeds 1/2” use Sika Backer Rod to control depth.” This is what their technical manual says : “ Always use bond breaker tape or closed cell backer rod for support on horizontal joints” When it comes right down to it this us what yheynuse to determine if the sealant was installed correctly. No matter what Hohhot think you have found. I frequently have Sika field techs on my job site. I have also testified in court as an expert witness. The backer rod not only provides depth control but also the proper joint configuration. Using sand is a stupid idea for many reasons Just a couple are 1 it is impossible to get the correct joint profile, it will always end up thicker in the middle of the joint. The exact opposite of correct joint configuration. 2 to properly install the sealant it has to be installed under slight pressure which pushes the sand ahead of the joint compromising he the bond surface 3 the sand wicks the solvent out of the sealant compromising it’s cure 4 the sand absorbs moisture keeping the bottom of the joint wet year round. Technically creating a submerged joint which will fail prematurely.( sika can be submerged but requires primer not readily available to consumers.)
