Using thinset (Cement Based Adhesive) - Mosaic Tip

Using thinset can be very messy , I will show you an easy way to use it. - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ - When it comes to sealing some people choose not seal when using thinset, there preference is to wet the area down and the water absorbs into the substrate rather than zapping the moisture out of the thinset which works well. When using a sealant there is a chance it could fail which means your mosaic could fail as the thinset is sticking to the sealant. I use Laticrete thinset and in many cases Laticrete Hydroban which is a water proofing membrane/sealant. To seal or not to seal is a personal choice, you need to choose the best option to suit your needs and as always read the manufacturers data sheets so you can make an informed decision on whatever products you use.
**PLEASE NOTE** A respirator mask should be worn at all times even when grouting or mixing thinset outside and its breezy, I didnt in this video as I was filming.
Laticrete Thinset is available in Australia online from

Could you just mix the thinset IN the plastic baggie instead of mixing in a cup and then transferring it??
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 3 года назад
Thats a great question, I haven't tried that, I cant see a reason why you cant do that although I'm inclined to put the bag into the plastic or ceramic cup as I think it will be easier to mix and then after mixing turn it into a baggie. :)

@@TreasuryRoad i seem to remember a camping experience where we mixed biscuit dough in a baggie. So I tried it, and it was fun and easy to massage the thinset and water in the bag and then squirt it out the corner. If the slaking doesn't require expose to air...should work. Seemed to work!

I have one concern to mention here... When mixing anything with Silica, cutting tiles, stone, or glassware that just might contain silica, and especially using silica in powder form of any kind; a PS2 or N95 mask is required at the very least. For some work, a respirator mask may even be necessary. And for goodness sake; if there's even the slightest breeze, don't risk it, mask yourself, and wear gloves. The lung damage caused by inhaling even tiny amounts of silica can be severe and is irreversible. Safety First. Always.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 3 года назад
I agree you need to take the necessary safety precautions when dealing with silica dust especially the fine particles of it and I always mention it, I probably should have worn a mask at the same time and I do use a respirator mask when dealing with Epoxy grouts. Thankyou for mentioning it. :)

Thanks for this video, Peter! I'm preparing to install an outdoor mosaic on a cinder-block wall. At this point I'm waiting for the weather to warm up a bit a night, here in the Southwest of USA. It's a little intimidating to me as I've never made an outdoor mosaic but your videos sure are helpful...I just don't want to waste my art if I do something wrong! Thanks again for sharing your expertise! :)

Hi Marcia thankyou very much appreciate that. My suggestion would be to do something smaller for outside so you can become familiar with the products you use and how they will work together and handle. It will also be a lot less intimidating as well. I always read the manufactures technical data sheet and safety data sheet, they are very easy to read and generally available on the manufactures website. These will have all the things that the product can and cannot do and take out any guesswork. The only real difference to an indoor and an outdoor mosaic are the products, for outside they need to be waterproof and suited for outside in the harsh environment they are in. Indoor mosaics generally don't deal with harsh environments that the outdoors have. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

There are many different products out in the market place to suit many different environments, to ensure you receive the most accurate advice suited to your project always read the manufactures technical sheets before purchasing, they are very easy to read and available on the manufactures website, I do this before buying any products, they are there for that very reason, this ensures that that the product you buy is the right one. Some people dont need to take into account freeze thaw cycles, extreme temperatures, being underwater all these come into play so the technical sheets will sort through all those issues, you can always call the companies as well after you read them just to confirm your thoughts.

Great video, just what I needed! With your help, I've figured out how to install hanging hardware onto my backing - thanks! Now I'm ready for adhering my mosaic, that's glued to mesh, with thinset. What I've already bought for grout is Polyblend, which, I read, has been modified with polymer to improve flexibility, color and consistency. Can I mix this with Admix to make the thinset, do you think? Once I apply thinset, after setting, I'll then grout using just the grout mixture.

Thanks Peter, good video. I have a few questions. I'm doing smalti work and am using Laticrete Platinum 254 as the thinset adhesive. The primary reason you use grout with admix is so your grout color will match your adhesive, correct? Are there any other reasons why you do this? I've found 254 to be a superior adhesive and it can be used inside & out. Have you ever used 254? If so, any comments? I'm sure you've covered this in a past video but what is your recommended colorant for grout & thinset? Do you use Tints-All? Others? And are there any easy methods to help get consistent color when tinting? I guess you could weigh the amount of grout or thinset, water & colorant used and mix to the same ratios each time you mix. Are there any easier (quicker) ways to do this? I'll check your past videos to see if you have one on tinting. Lastly, are there any mixes available that will allow a mixed powdered grout or thinset to stay moist when covered (similar to how pre-mixed thinset keeps over time as long as you keep the lid closed). Appreciate any answers you can provide. Thanks.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad Год назад
Thanks so much Christopher. Yes the main reasons I use Laticrete Permacolour grout and the Laticrete Admix is the same thinset/grout colour and the consistent colour as well. I haven't used Laticrete Platinum 254 although it is popular. I believe you can purchase Laticrete Permacolour Select which is like a base grout and there are pigment type additives comes in different colours that you add but I haven't used that either. If you are going to use colourants you will need to keep notes on what you are using and how much to ensure colour consistency. I don't know of any thinset or grouts that are like a premixed and stay moist, although I have heard good reports about Spectralock 1 grout in a tub. My suggestion is to call Laticrete and speak to their tech department, new products are always being added to their range and they know their products best. They will best advise you on the project you are doing. :)

Thanks so much Elizabeth appreciate that. I cant give you advice on the product you bought because I don't use premix or know what product you bought. I would have thought the directions would be on the container or you can ring the company that makes it just to verify. From my understanding I thought premixed means its good to go out of the container. When you mix thinset from powder that's when you generally have to let it slake for the chemical reaction to occur. I have chronic asthma and use the thinset I mix up I just do it outside and wear a P2 or N95 mask until its all mixed, I haven't had any issues. Love the Scottish accent my accent tends to destroy the English language. lol Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

Is there anything else you reccomend beside laticrete? I'm allergic to latex. I'm trying to make an outside mosiac piece. Water proof
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 3 года назад
Grout doesn't have any adhesive properties so trying to adhere something with grout will fail. You can buy standalone thinset rather than use the method in this video, just choose a well known brand and make sure its suitable for the tessera you are using generally standalone thinsets are white or grey but you can colour them with coloured oxides. The standalone thinset is how the majority of people buy thinset, there are different ones that adhere to different tess so choosing the correct one is important. No matter what product you buy always read the manufacturers technical data sheets to ensure the product is suitable for the tess, substrate and the environment its going into they also tell you what the product contains, they are very easy to read and available on the manufactures website its a good habit to get into as it tells you what it can and cannot do, you can also call the manufacturer who can advise you on a product that suits your needs especially if you are allergic to something, also good to read the MSDS so you take take the necessary safety precautions. :)

Hi Peter, thanks for this clarification about how thinset is used. (I've never used it.) My question is an "aside". Where do you find ceramic objects, like the flowers in this video, for use with mosaic pieces? I know they might sometimes be found on dishes, if one is lucky in their search. Any other suggestions where I might look for pre-made objects that would work this way? Thanks.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 5 лет назад
Hi Susan, the two larger ceramic flowers I made those, the other three came from a candle holder which I bought from an Op Shop or Thrift store, I tend to buy cheap things to break up for the flowers specifically if they are vintage ones as the flowers are a lot easier to get off. I took ceramic classes so as I could make my own flowers, if you go to my Facebook page you will see all the others I made. I thought making them would be a fairly quick process but its actually quite time consuming and labor intensive, if you want to make some take ceramic classes there may be one in your area. :)

@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 4 года назад
You are correct when adding Laticrete Admix to Laticrete Permacolour grout thinset is created. Thinset is not intended to be used as a grout but I have used it for that very purpose if the mosaic edge is not a defined edge for instance if the tess has not created an actual edge to grout too, then I will grout with the thinset as the edge is exposed. Grout doesn't have any adhesive properties and if I use grout it would chip off easily so in this instance I use thinset. BUT be aware grouting with thinset is quite different to normal sanded grout as its an adhesive and requires quick work otherwise you can end up in a terrible mess. If your grout lines are quite large thinset can still crack so its not a miracle fix, I have only grouted with thinset on small projects. Grout these days has come a long way if you are using Laticrete Permacolour sanded grout that should be fine. You can also try Laticrete Spectralock Epoxy grout which I love and use for my outside projects, its a three part system, more expensive but is not as gritty as sanded grout, has mold and mildew inhibitors in and doesn't require sealing. :)

Peter, throughout this video you use the word 'grout' yet at one point you do clarify that you are using thinset - not grout. I know that you can't be adhering with grout, yet the wording used is confusing. Am I missing something? Thanks!
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 5 лет назад
Hi Joann, it can be a little confusing but its great that you ask the question as someone else could be wondering as well. :) I am using Laticrete Permacolour grout and Laticrete Admix to create the thinset (cement based adhesive). Although you can buy thinset off the shelf, the advantage to using these products is you are able to use the same colour grout that you will be grouting with so theres less cleaning up when it gets into your grout lines as its the same colour. The Laticrete Admix gives the grout the adhesiveness and turns it into thinset. If you buy off the shelf thinset its usually white so if you get a lot in your grout lines you have to get it out if you are going to be grouting in any other colour other than white, using the above products saves you having to do that. When it comes to grouting you just use the same grout that you used for the thinset but instead of adding the admix you use water instead so essentially one product does two jobs, I hope this helps to make it clearer. :)
@joannlassell9406
@joannlassell9406 5 лет назад
@@TreasuryRoad I just saw your message! It was lost in the nether-lands of email! Peter, thanks for that clarification. I hadn't realized that the Admix had adhesive qualities, I thought it just increased working time. I use it with regular thinset to increase working time but also so that I have the added benefit of being able to embed tesserae deep enough in the thinset bed I've laid down so that grouting becomes unnecessary. I have dry colorant I add to achieve the color I want so I don't need to work in the white or grey that are the usual for thinset colors. Thanks again! Love watching your videos....

Hello, and thank you so much for your videos. I'm about to begin my first project using thinset. I've ordered a Mapei product with an admix (Adesilex, suggested on Mosaic Mentoring site). I'll be preparing wediboard with a white thinset undercoat, also suggested on MM site for the purpose of reflecting the color of stained glass tesserae. It is an outdoor project, so thinset will also be the adhesive. I plan to use charcoal colored grout. So I'm trying to understand, based on your comments at the end of this video, will be problematic to grout dark over a light colored thinset as adhesive? Do i need to add pigment to the thinset adhesive? I hope my question is clear. Thank you so much.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 7 месяцев назад
Hi Karen thankyou very much. Thinset is a great product and there can be a learning curve because its very sticky but stay with it, its a great product. If you are using opaque stained glass you probably wont need to apply a white thinset undercoat because the light wont be able to go through the glass. Just do a test on this before you coat the board. Also if you are using white thinset to adhere the glass tessera down then why precoat the board at all? Regarding the end comment in the video, if you are applying white thinset to adhere the glass tesserae down, you need to make sure that you do not fill the grout lines up with white adhesive if your grout is going to be a different colour, because there wont be enough room for the grey grout. You will need to ensure you clean out the grout lines of the white thinset as you go to allow for the grey grout, its not difficult but a step you will need to do IF you happen to get to much thinset in some of the grout lines. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)

Hi Cheryl, I cannot see why that wouldn't work, I haven't used thinset in that way however it is an adhesive and many others use it as a background and texture it in their mosaics. Give it a try and see how you go, if anything it should be a fun project. You may need to dampen the pot down a bit with water and a sponge or rag so the terracotta doesn't suck the moisture out of the thinset. :) Thanks for commenting. :)

Thank you for your quick reply. I was going to paint the pot the same colour as the thickset first to seal it. Would the thickset still adhere to the pot if painted?@@TreasuryRoad

I have no idea you would need to contact Laticrete in your country, I know they have stopped producing the 5 litres here which is a pain but the larger containers apparently outsell the smaller size by far. :)

I plan to use Thinset as a background and then as a glue to set the tesserae in. Does it matter if the thinset from the background dries before you use thinset to place your tesserae. I plan to do a piece using old jewelry and not to grout Thankyou

I think I understand the question and you can go over already cured thinset, however if you are using thinset to adhere the jewellery I would probably rethink that as thinset is very alkaline and may effect the jewellery I would be using an Apoxie Clay to adhere the jewellery and this will be a lot easier to work with especially for jewellery. I have created a video on using Apoxie Clay. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1CHAykoiNZY.html

If I am using a thinset powder, is it possible to colour it? I bought a large bag of white but I want to use charcoal grout. What would happen if I use dark grout over white thinset?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
You can colour thinset using coloured oxides, generally available at hardware stores, do not use acrylic paint, some people do but it’s not designed as a colourant. Also when using oxides be aware that there is a ratio that you can add to the thinset so you don’t compromise it. Generally speaking If you have used white thinset to adhere your Tess and you are going to grout a piece with dark grout it should be fine providing that the grout lines are deep enough to take the grout and not filled with white thinset. 😊

Hi Debra, Im good thankyou. :) I dont think I used the mesh in this video but if you mean using it in general as in the sides of Wedi or Marmox board its main purpose is to reinforce and add strength and at the same time it also helps hold the thinset. :)

Can you use thinset to adhere glass to wedi-board or hardee backer board?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 3 года назад
You can use thin set to adhere to Wedi board and Hardibacker board if that is cement sheet. Just make sure you choose the right thin set for the application and the tess you are using as there are different ones. As always read the manufacture technical sheets to ensure it’s suitable.

@@PABragg Ahh so we aren’t talking about pieces of Tess but rather a big sheet of glass adhering to the backer board l can’t advise you on that one but definitely would require researching, you could post it in the Facebook mosaic groups and see if someone has made one similar and use their info as a starting point. 😊

What is ad mix? What are you mixing with the grout?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
Grout on its own doesn't have any adhesive properties. Using the Laticrete Permacolour grout with the Laticrete Admix turns the ordinary sanded grout into a cement based adhesive (thinset), I use the admix in place of water. :)

Hi, I thought you said you were gonna show us how to use thinset , but then at the end you say that you used grout as thinset mixed with the liquid additive ( is it Bonding Liquid?). As grout could be used for both purposes ,( both thinset & grouting) So I'm confused as to what exactly it is . I'll appreciate if you could please explain. Thank you .
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
Hi Faaiza. In the video you can create coloured thinset by using Laticrete Permacolour grout of your choice of colour and Laticrete Latex admix in place of water, the admix turns the grout into thinset. The same grout can also be used to grout your piece you just need to add water and not the Latex admix. What most people do is they just buy of the shelf thinset which is fine but it generally comes in white or grey, this video shows you another way if you want to create coloured thinset using the two Laticrete products. You can also buy off the shelf thinset and just used oxides to colour it as well. :)

Hi. Here in South Africa we don't get laterite latex , what we do get is Bonding Liquid, is it the same, and also here we get tile cement , that what it's referred to, is it the same as thinset. Thanking you

@@faaizasayed149 Im not familiar with that product, I would suggest reading the technical data sheet on it, that what they are there for, they are easy to read and generally available from the companies website to view. The easiest way and what most people do is just buy thinset from a store, just make sure its suitable for your job and the tessera as there are different ones, reading the technical data sheets will help you in this instance as well. :)

@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
There are other grout manufactures that also make the additives, I would only use the same company that manufactures the additive and their grout as they are designed to work together. Always read the manufactures technical data sheets as with any product to ensure its compatible with the environment its going into, the tess and the substrate you're using. :)

I have a lot of thinnest from a big bag I bought anticipating doing crockery mosaics. I did a tray with glass baubles and I don't remember using any additive, I think I just used water??? Can you answer with the name of the product you added to liquefy the thinsett? Mine set up really nicely for indoor use. I didn't like some of the shiny areas that showed up, I sanded them but still not that attractive.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 года назад
I used Laticrete Latex Additive 4237 for the Laticrete product. Not all thinsets are the same so you need to make sure that the product you are using is in accordance with the directions and technical data sheet. Don't add anything without checking first. I generally use the same products and never mix and match different manufactures products, that way you can be sure they work together. :)

@@ooohlaa13 I don't know what product you used. By using the Laticrete Latex Additive with the Laticrete Permacolour grout it turned the normal sanded grout into thinset. Most people will just buy thinset and it generally comes in grey or white, this is just a different way to create coloured thinset using Laticrete sanded Permacolour grout as it comes in 40 colours. Ordinary sanded grout doesn't have any adhesive properties adding the Latex additive changes that. Here's a RU-vid video that I created which will explain things further. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sEALrLP4WZ8.html
