I struggle with this but, how many instruments should be on these type of songs? Cause you just used a guitar here and its fire man
@bl6628
@bl6628 3 года назад
Most, but not all, of hip-hop is more simple than you would think. If you put the same exact notes across several instruments you're layering, which makes things sound full, can give texture and movement depending on what you add. If you use the same notes, but only a few, you're accenting the already used notes. If you use different instruments and put different notes then you're adding counter melodies. You don't always need layers, depending on the sound, but if it sounds "dry, robotic, boring, predictable" then it would probably benefit from another instrument playing the same thing, and is similar to the original sound in that that it doesn't stand out on it's own, and makes the two sound like one single, more interesting sound. Counter melodies and accents are just additional flair... they aren't necessary all the time, but they do add movement and can emphasize different parts to enhance the groove and feel. Guitar tracks in hip-hop generally are just the guitar, with some accent notes, and maybe some synths in certain sections so it's not just the guitar looping forever. 21 Savage - Bank Account is a good example of just a looping guitar part, extremely simple and repetitive, and it has some bell-like sound come in with a counter melody at times to change it up. The best approach is to start simple, and build your song around it, then experiment with adding accents and counter melodies. Don't fill up space just because it's there, and if you're filling a space, make sure it's working to either accent or counter something, and that it "sits" with what you already had. I think the idea of a beat is that there's eventually going to be a rapper/singer and their vocals are going to add their own melodies, counter melodies, accents (ad-libs) and having a ton of stuff going doesn't leave as much space for it. If you study a lot of hip-hop you'll see there are very simple patterns going on. If there's a huge variety of sounds, they're usually space out, played at different times and in different sections... so the beat isn't full of the same stuff looped across the entire thing. This video just showed you exactly everything I'm talking about. He didn't do anything crazy melodically, or add a ton of shit, and you liked it. Follow the formula... and then you can start to break it once you understand why simple works.

@@bl6628 Really detailed response, I appreciate this, my beats have been a bit too complex arrangement wise. Taking this into conside immediately, thank you 🙏🏼
