Using VHD files and Native Boot in Windows 7. Creating, managing and imaging VHD (virtual hard drive) files with "Disk management" and the command-line tool "diskpart". Transfering bootable images to VHD files via ImageX.exe. Booting from VHD files using Windows 7's Native Boot capability.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I didn't know you could start Windows from a vhd. I was at the max partitions for my harddrive and now I find out you don't need partitions for dual booting. I'm actually sending this comment to you from the Windows 8.1 Pro I installed to the VHD. Btw you just got another subscriber! :D Keep up the great tutorials!

for those who are following along with Windows 10, you're not required to use ImageX.exe. You can use Dism /apply-image /imagefile:i:\sources\install.wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:x:\ (Windows 10 BIOS) Beside the ImageX.exe part, I was able to get everything working with everything else. I hope this helps.

If you crate one of these virtual hard disks, can you use this to add an XP VHD to your existing Win7 machine? Do you know if you can set up the VHD and then install WinXP on it like a regular partition?

Pretty Amazing video! All I wanted to know is how did you install hackintosh to the vdh?The main reason I was watching it was to install and dual boot hackintosh and windows without needing to format my HDD.

Thanks, helpful... i have one question, can i make a windows 7 image (from win7 backup image) and make it bootable. that would be a conversion ( i have a few licenced software on that pc) Thanks

Yes, sysprep it and use imagex (if you're using Windows 7 medium or PE 3.1) or DISM (if you're using Windows 8\10 medium or PE 4 or 10) to image your OS. Create an image With Windows 7 ImageX /capture C: W:\myimage.wim “My Capture Image” Create an image with Windows 8\10 Dism /Capture-Image /ImageFile:c:\data\myData.wim /CaptureDir:C:\data\dataFiles /Name:MyData

The element data type specified is not recognized, or does not apply to the specified entry. Run "bcdedit /?" for command line assistance. Element not found. In case you get this error, run this command: bcdmgmt /delete {} Then do the commands again (starting here): bcdedit /copy {default} /d "Label of os"

Very helpful in my case.. BTW, can you do this concept using vmware products? I'm kinda new to the virtual world so it'll be a great help.. I like vmware a lot also.. thanks

@cgermany77 also how did you install hackintosh on your vhd? am not asking witch program [eg emprie efi , chameleon etc etc] am asking how coudl you install all these on the vhd..

I don't suppose it's possible to do anything like native vhd boot to windows 7... but into a neighbouring virtual-disk that's contains an OSX? Been trawling, but all articles point to multi-boot or VBOX etc. I'd LOVE to house a mac in a virtual disk and boot natively

possible but would have to read some documentation for vbox settings to be set so right to work effectively and lots of ram and video mem..

wouldn't shrink hdd to certain size about 100gb then create vhd to that new partitioned shrunk hdd and select at bios menu new vhd as first boot device or drive also install the virtual drive from dvdfab or from dvd clone for mounting the win 10 image in the new virtual vhd new hdd partitioned going to try it myself
