I am convinced that 99.9% of the time when we use the word "lazy" we are not referring to things that are ACTUALLY lazy. You're being underpaid and treated badly by your boss, so you don't give 110%? You're lazy! The problem isn't your job or your boss, it's you! (Because if you're lazy, neither your boss nor society ever has to listen to your complaints and ask if they might be genuine problems.) And then there's the way we treat people with different neurotypes. I'm autistic, and that comes with a lot of executive function challenges that makes starting and finishing projects really hard, or changing from one task to another. But because of the way our society talks about "laziness" that's what I called it. For example, I'd be reading a book or something and not able to stop reading and get up at lunchtime and make lunch, and I would continue to read for a couple of hours even after I was starving and not enjoying the book. And I'd tell myself "wow, you're really lazy, what kind of lazy bum can't even bother to get up off the couch and feed herself?" Because as a kid, anytime I had problems starting something or finishing something or changing tasks, I got told I was being lazy and not working up to my full potential. But I wasn't not doing the task because I'd chosen to blow it off, I was not doing the task because I couldn't figure out how to get my brain and body to engage! There are so many reasons someone may have for not doing something, even something they want to do. Anxiety, or not being sure how to do it, or being tired, or something like autism or ADD, or any one of a hundred other reasons that aren't laziness!

Thank you for sharing this with me. I am now sorry I talked to and about myself that way. Though I have never been diagnosed I do believe I fall somewhere on the spectrum. Anxiety I’m learning shows itself in SO many ways and not just the ones we think of automatically. Sewing completely helps me with my anxiety but I think the RU-vid aspect might add to it. Not always but sometimes. Especially when I struggling through a project I’ve lost interest in or energy to complete. But I will say I have the kindest audience on the entire internet. I am certain of this. Thank you again ♥️Drew

I also struggle with the directions in some patterns. Totally agree that the more you sew, the more you realise how to do things and don't get flumoxed by instructions you can't understand. Its also just gaining confidence and knowing you can make it work. Well done. Your makes are always gorgeous.
@envisionfarm1923

Agreed! I just made a reproduction pattern and there were 2 steps that just weren't in the instructions at all. I read them over and over, couldn't find where they ever referenced finishing off an area, so I had to just wing it. Worked out in the end, but it did surprise me they weren't written thoroughly enough.

Love it! And your transparency is refreshing. I honestly spent months letting a skirt sit because two buttonholes got messed up and I was overwhelmed with the idea of possibly ruining the skirt on the very last step. 2 weeks is nothing, haha! And I’m a mom just like you. Some weeks are just too crazy and you can’t get focused time to sew. But you persevered. The ability to go back to it and keep moving is more important than the amount of time it took!

I am so honored that you liked my suggestion and used it! I love that dress with everything that you tried with it, proving that vintage and modern can really compliment each other quite well! I have two sweaters that are constructed with each piece knitted flat , as opposed to being knit in the round, for those who knit. I have all the pieces completed, but they still need to be knit together, but I have not had the motivation to complete them. A couple of weeks is just a respectable pause compared to my procrastination! I must admit that one sweater has been languishing uncompleted for 6 years, and the other one for 14 years! 😧 No, you are certainly not alone! 🤗 As a crafter, it is very important to be inspired while you work. If you are only going through the motions just to complete the task, you are a lot more susceptible to making mistakes that can ruin the entire project, or, at the very least, just result in an unnecessary waste of time correcting additional annoying mistakes that would not have otherwise been made, or even experience a complete loss of interest in the project. Setting a project aside until you can resolve a problem or just to regain your focus is often just a normal, even necessary, part of the creative process. I am fully on board with the comfort of pajamas, as I and my family mostly wear pajamas, or comfortable loungewear that can double as pajamas, while at home, too. It is hard to enjoy what you are doing if you are uncomfortable! Yours are so lovely, though, that they are even prettier than most average street clothes! You have lovely taste and ability that well complements your God-given beauty and endearing personality! 🥰

You did a great job, and u look beautiful in the dress! Serena is right, wearing the proper under garments makes all the difference in fit. My favorite accessories are the gold and the nude (altho the others work as well.) I've been sewing for years & still have those projects that fluster me. I figure my brain needs to reset so i take a few days off. When Im ready to go back to it, it all works out. 😊 You are very talented and I love seeing how you've come along. I'm a sew-aholic and I enjoy watching others that share my passion ❤

Hey Drew! Lovely to see you pop up in my feed❤ this looks SO good!! Ain’t nothin wrong with neutrals-you could style this a million different ways, and it’s awesome to figure out what you truly love. I really like the idea of bringing the fam in to help you cover the buttons! I just finished a really similar vintage skirt with pleats and pockets! The pleats were inset into the pockets and there were also flaps and…yeah it took some time! Such a cool look though. Patience is key with sewing vintage! The details really look nice on your dress-so proud of you! Don’t feel bad about putting it down for a while-it just means you are a human being challenging herself to try new things❤

Not being able to part with that dining table because of its memories despite its imperfections is so me - I still have the tiny round table my grandmother bought for my first apartment back in 2002! I should really refinish the top of it, but I just try to keep a pretty tablecloth on it and carry on lol I’m so glad to hear you’re starting to see the growth in your sewing now! Why is it we’re always the last to see it? Gotta be something about that creative artist mindset! I was just talking to my 9 year old about that today when he got frustrated to tears when he “ruined” his air dry clay sculpture by adding a detail that didn’t work out and couldn’t come off without messing up other parts of it. I said baby, I know this feels like a big frustrating failure, but I PROMISE that so many people would consider that amazing just as it is! You’re just heartbroken right now because it didn’t match your vision and that’s just part of being an artist. You put that aside in time out just like I put my sewing projects in time out sometimes! It will be there when *you* are ready! When he was ready, he did go back to it, figured out what he could do with that “ruined” sculpture and made a new better version of it, too! Let’s celebrate all the personal growth and not worry so much on how much time (or time outs) it might take!!! 💜💜💜 Thanks so much for sharing this amazing project with us, Drew, and your journey with it, too!

Love it!! I have to walk away from sewing projects for a while because I've been frustrated with how it was going. Something about time, rest, food & clearing your head makes it work out better. I have a dress that I was making as a wearable toile that I haven't picked up (except to move off the sewing pile 😅) in a year & a half. It's very much Christmas themed. Maybe I'll pull it out after I finish my mending pile 🤦🏼‍♀️ I do love this dress! It looks like a perfect fit and it is so versatile! I don't think you can wrong with any way you style it!

So cute! Good job! Yeah I absolutely hit that demotivation wall on projects all the time. Small hiccups can be big derailments, but a lot of the time small wins also get me back on track. That and I've been doing buddy sews over video calls to help get me in the zone. But ugh yup takes a lot of conscious effort to get around blocks. It's tough! ❤

Hi Drew! Your video just came up on my feed & I'm so glad it did. I love vintage as well & will soon try my hand at sewing some vintage patterns. I'm pretty new to sewing clothes. I did take a fashion design class in high school but have not sewn clothes over the recent years. I am getting into making clothes & some of the things I learned way back when are coming back to mind. I have subscribed to your channel as I like that you sew vintage patterns & don't edit out the mistakes or that you lost your focus. I look forward to viewing your past videos along with your current videos. OH! I love the dress with everything you tried on :)

Hello Drew ~ love the work you and Sew Rena make. I noticed you always lift your pressure foot with the lever in the back of the machine. Did you receive a knee lift with your machine? That will eliminate you reaching back behind the machine to lift the pressure foot. Just my observation. Love the dress….you did a fantabulous job!

My singer finally stopped working properly, after 13 years. Purchased a new brother... this was about a year ago... i still haven't used the brother once. It has a drop in bobbin... I'm not used to that. I have projects building, in wait... still haven't started any of them; unless by hand. I really think I'm afraid of this brother sewing machine... 🫣🙄😒

Try getting out the manual and starting from step one to get the basics down pat? From my 1902 machine to any modern machine, they all use the same lock stitch technology. It’s amazing really how little it’s really changed. I ditched modern machines when I realized I still only use like four stitches.
