1/240 Scale. Made in the USA! This kit comes from the original and updated Varney tooling. Perhaps the first plastic model kit made in the USA! Goes back to the late 1940's. Build a piece of history. Molded in gray with retro box art. Features detailed propellers and diving planes, deck cannons and updated decals for the entire class of GATO Ships. Nice display stand.
The United States Navy Gato class submarine was the forerunner of all US World War II submarine designs. The Gato-class boats were considered to be "Fleet Submarines". They were to scout out ahead of the fleet and report on the enemy fleet's composition, speed, and course, then they were to attack and whittle down the enemy in preparation for the main fleet action.
USS Gato (SS-212) was the lead ship of her class of submarine in the US Navy. She was the first Navy ship named for the Gato, a species of small Catshark. The Gatos and their successors formed the core of the submarine service that was largely responsible for the destruction of the Japanese merchant marine and a large portion of the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II.
The Gato-class could hold a maximum of twenty-four torpedoes which could be launched from ten torpedo tubes. They were also armed with one 3 inch deck gun and a variety of smaller anti-aircraft weapons. Measuring 307 feet by 27 feet by 14 feet, Gato-class submarines had a typical displacement of 1,525 tons. General Motors Diesel engines and electric motors provided 6,500 brake horsepower, resulting in a speed of 21 knots.
Seventy-seven of these boats were commissioned from November 1941 (Drum) through April 1944 (Croaker). Twenty ships of the class were lost during World War II.
Museum boats
Six Gato-class submarines are open to public viewing. They primarily depend on revenue generated by visitors to keep them operational and up to U.S. Navy standards; each boat gets a yearly inspection and a "report card". Some boats, such as Cod and Silversides, have been used in film production.
Surviving ships
The following is a complete list of Gato-class museum boats:
USS Cavalla SS-244 is at Seawolf Park near Galveston, Texas
USS Cobia SS-245 is at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
USS Cod SS-224 is on display in Cleveland, Ohio. The submarine retains its historical structural integrity from its World War II configuration, as it does not have doors cut through its pressure hull nor stairwells added. (The other surviving Gato-class submarines have been modified for public access.) Cod was used in the filming of the Smithsonian Channel war documentary Hell Below and the subject of a two-part documentary in the World of Warships RU-vid channel named Naval Legends: USS Cod.
USS Croaker SS-246 is on display in Buffalo, New York.
USS Drum SS-228 is on display on shore at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama.
USS Silversides SS-236 is on display in Muskegon, Michigan.
1/300 Scale. Measures over 12 inches long. Molded in Dark black gray and clear. Updated decal sheet and new artwork. Skill level 2. This kit also comes with a STEM booklet explaining the history of early submarine development. A great learning tool for all. Atlantis acquired this tooling last year from Round 2.
USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on 3 August 1958. Her initial commanding officer was Eugene Parks "Dennis" Wilkinson, a widely respected naval officer who set the stage for many of the protocols of today's Nuclear Navy of the US, and who had a storied career during military service and afterwards.
Sharing a name with Captain Nemo's fictional submarine in Jules Verne's classic 1870 science fiction novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea[8] and the USS Nautilus (SS-168) that served with distinction in World War II,[9] the new nuclear-powered Nautilus was authorized in 1951. Construction began in 1952, and the boat was launched in January 1954, attended by Mamie Eisenhower, First Lady of the United States, wife of 34th President Dwight D. Eisenhower; it was commissioned the following September into the United States Navy. Nautilus was delivered to the Navy in 1955.

The gato kit was originally made by Varney in 1947! It is the first plastic model kit created in the USA. However the world was not ready for all plastic kits at the time. Glad we now own the tooling. Great Job Chris!

This was great! I built the USS Nautilus as a kid and it was very easy to build. I like the weathering as it adds a lot of interest to a simple black color scheme and all the photos of submarines I have seen show a mottled appearance to them like you did. Thanks for sharing this tutorial.

I built the Nautilus as a kid. Neat build. The missile for it is, I believe, a Regulus cruise missile. These boats build really nice. There had been a different model showing the interior. Thanks.

I'm a car guy and build a lot of late 60's to early 70's cars. Your channel has been really good for this taste. But I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I forgot how much fun and how easy building kits like these are. Great job on the builds. I'm going to have to pick these kits up when I see them. Great weekend unwinders. As you say in some of your vids, "If it's not your cup of tea. . ." But I think you made me want to try a different flavor of tea. Keep up the good work, what I like is how you go from a very detailed build, to a just put it together out of the box, I'm hoping this style will possibly bring people into this hobby. Or maybe bring them back if they have been out of the hobby the awhile.

Very nice. My Wife's grandfather served on all but Cobia's first war Patrol. My wife inherited a painting of the sub which hung on board Cobia before it was decommissioned. and his personal copy of Cobia's WW2 Battle flag. Cobia, In a mostly unknown to the public story was involved in the rescue of 7 members of a bomber crew that had to ditch where they had no hope of rescue other than to swim to shore where they would become POW's as a best case scenario. But Cobia who was only in the area at all, because they had to return to port to repair battle damage delaying their patrol for a couple of weeks, after which they returned to the area to complete the patrol that would have been over by then. Cobia saw the ditching and contacted the PBY that they saw fleeing the area before they could have rescued the whole crew, The floatplane told them enemy fighters were inbound and they were only a rescue plane with no defenses.

Chris, you did a great job detailing the "toy" kits. Atlantic did a wonderful job putting these out for folks who do not get into the more detailed kits. Seriously considering buying the kits. I had a cousin that was on the Nautilus back in the early 70's. He was a Nuclear a physicist. And my brother was on the Nautilus when they took it to New London Connecticut and turned it into a Museum back in the early 80's. He was a fireman / tour guide for his six years when he was in the Navy. I live in Manitowoc and seen the USS Cobia. I didn't get the chance to take a tour of it.

Fantastic to watch the Gato build, definitely gives the brand credit compared to others. As a note, the Nautilus did not have the deck gun or missile (I think those were to make it more appealing to kids from the old Lindberg kit)

I've been on the Cobia 2 times. Once with my English Wife. She was very impressed. As we toured the boat behind us was an ex-mariner that served on the diesel boats. He was more interesting than the guide. The only problem was there just wasn't enough time inside to look at everything thoroughly. Manitowoc was a sub building port which I found interesting being so far from the oceans. I like your build thanks for always saying, "It's your build so do it your way". 👍

The bathrooms (head) was crazy to me. I could easily live in a sub, but not with a bathroom like that! Crossing the Great Lakes to reach the ocean is/was a great way to prep the crew for operations, etc. They still build Navy ships in the general area.
