Take a lap around the exterior of USS Constitution to see how this 218-year-old warship looked shortly after entering Dry Dock 1 in Charlestown Navy Yard back in May 2015!
A good indication of how the copper sheathing goes green, if you wanted to paint a model accurately. Or did they use Muntz metal sheathing on the ship in the US?
Look at her size and ruminate on the fact that she is a heavy frigate and then think about the size of a 1st rate ship of the line. Unbelievable that they could make ships of these proportions out of wood that could sail the globe.
They're from hammering in the nails that hold on the copper plates. I'm not sure if they knew it but the dimples reducing drag might have been a happy accident
