My grandpa was the chief electrician on the Pensacola. He told me tons of stuff but you don't ever really hear that she was heading to the Aleutian Islands when Pearl Harbor was hit. They did a u-turn and headed back to Pearl. She was the first ship to sail into Pearl after the attack. They were involved in body retrieval. Gramps said they were pulling bodies out of flooded compartments and said that after 2 weeks underwater, that the eyes of those dead would turn pink from the seawater. I asked him if they went to Wake Island and he said "we passed by and warmed up the guns a bit". I sure miss him. I look forward to hanging out with him in the Kingdom Age!

The history of USS Pensacola is incomplete without mention of the Pensacola Convoy. In short, she was at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked while escorting a few merchantmen bound for Manila with materiel and men for the defense of the Philippines, and planes for the Flying Tigers. The sea route chosen before departing PH, indicates that war was expected to be imminent - worthwhile to check it out.
@WALTERBROADDUS
@WALTERBROADDUS 5 лет назад
Who says war was not exepected? That day or hour? No. But war warnings had been issued days before. And US forces in China had evacuated "mostly" by the Dec. 7th.

@@WALTERBROADDUS Indeed. Note that "PepsicolaCo" left PH 10 days before the attack, steamed due South for a couple of days to avoid going anywhere near Japanese possessions, and to pass through the Torres Strait, between Australia and New Guinea - adding several weeks to the voyage. If imminent danger was not expected, the convoy with its valuable reinforcements would have taken the direct route to Manila. At almost the same time, the British decided to send their "deterrent" Force Z and thousands of troops (Australian and Indian) to Malaya. How is is then possible that PH was found unprepared on 7 Dec, and MacArthur messing up so badly the next day!
@WALTERBROADDUS
@WALTERBROADDUS 5 лет назад
@@philipjooste9075 Joint operations have never been a strong suit of the US military. As for the convoy? This was just one part of a mass force build up. Sadly timed badly. Then orders changed and the convoy sent to Australia instead. As for the defense of the Philippines? The story is a bit more complicated than the anti MacArthur mob make it. www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/I/AAF-I-6.html

Liked the new start to the video One major problem with the US Treaty cruisers is that in order to save weight all the guns were mounted in single sleeve and could only elevate or depress as a complete unit whereas other Navies mounted the guns individually. As no two guns ae aver identical this was a weakness in the design which was also shared by some US BB's

My Grandfather served on the Pensacola at Iwo Jima and Okinawa (not mentioned in this video). I have his diary which is very thorough and accurate, and they went through hell doing battle with Japanese 8 inch guns captured from the British and used on those islands. They were hit by a Kamikaze and 6 - 8 eight inch shells. One beautiful thing I found out was that he was an electricians mate, as I am currently an electricians apprentice, and in the diary, just as on the job site today, others call us "Sparky".

My grandfather, Louis Deet Bonin was on the USS Pensacola. He received the Silver Star for his actions on the night they were hit by a torpedo. He ran straight into exploding artillery and fire because men were trapped....he told my dad about the men he couldnt save, very sad. That was on November 30th late and into December 1st. I believe over a 140 men lost their lives. They had a real tight crew, truly all were heros. 13 battle stars, and the USS Pensacola did not sink after the 1st Nuclear Bomb test, it survived that test, think it was the only ship that did...thats what i remember in my research and how awesome for it to survive. Just like after they were hit by a torpedo, they brought it in to dock while it was on fire. Miracle, after seeing the damage that was done, and it was still burning the entire time, wow, what a site that must have been to witness. The USS Pensacola got after it, battle after battle non stop, what an amazing group of men. My paw paw was the hardest working, toughest man, but a man who cared about helping others, and serving Jesus.

Great video and series! By the way - a question you might consider tackling - you mention much about how during WWII, especially for ships in the Pacific, AA guns went from single guns to rapid fire 5", 40 mm and 20 mm Bofors - and noted that the additional weight. How much of the extra weight was due to the guns and mounts and how much was due to fire control and ammunition. Those weapons consumed vast mounts of ammunition - the movie clips (maybe skewed and biased) show piles of cases, clips and such ...? tons and tons of ammo per ship? Again, great channel!

I never understood why the Navy simply did not cut off that huge, heavy tripod foremast and replace it with a lighter pole mast such as were installed on the Astoria and the Indianapolis. That would have saved a great deal of top-weight and improved the ship's stability, especially while they were adding additional anti-aircraft guns and electronics. It clearly occurred to the Navy to remove the much smaller main mast, but why didn't they also take the opportunity to remove the massive foremast as well? It is difficult to believe that there was anything up there that the ship could not have lived without, or simply replaced lower down.

The Rodney (Prince George) was such an unusual looking design..9 min guns forward and slim superstructure.. can you explore the building and design decisions that created this unusual looking but most impressive three turrets forward 16 in guns.. quite a sight .!! The ship that could !! Thanks !!

Ironic how many countries violated the treaties and Britain with this design attempted to keep to the treaty specs with a 16-in battleship they're funny looking but still awesome!

Q&A: I've always wondered how a ship's beam was increased during refits or modernizations. Did they pry them wider? Or was it just a matter of adding bulges on the sides?

So my initial reaction was "Figures, like my home town it's named after the cruiser is a cluster frag. However as I watch more of these videos where treaty stipulations figure prominently, I realize this isn't entirely fair. These poor designers had one arm tied behind their back and they probably did the best they could with what they had to work with.
@Drachinifel
@Drachinifel 5 лет назад
Yep, the treaty limits were basically written to allow decent ships of WW1 design. The minute you had to start adding AA guns, radar, sonar, more armour to deal with better guns etc, you ended up having to make compromises.

Drach I some times doubt the speeds declared. At 585 ft with a 65 ft beam and 107k shp, I'd bet the true top speed to be closer to 38/40 kts. Of course, she'd be out of fuel in a few hours... sustained 32 kts cruising speed (weather dependent of course) seems far more likely.

could you please do one on the USS Niagara I she has a great story to tell and was of critical importance in winning the battle of lake Erie in the war of 1812, raking 2 Royal brigs caught in their own sails and forcing both to surrender winning the battle as the first and only time in the war (US side of it atleast, idk about in europe) the British surrendered an entire fleet. I just bought Naval action and i'm really enjoying it so far, i plan to get her soon and just rig her with full 32pndr carronades for maximum but sex.

Great video as always! Just a quick question though, will you in the future branch out to more modern warships later on? Not saying the ww1 to ww2 time period is bad i very much enjoy it and have learnt heaps about it, but could be interesting to watch you use you're knowledge and expertise on more modern warships and how they have developed since ww2.
@Drachinifel
@Drachinifel 5 лет назад
I'm willing to talk about more modern ships, but prefer to avoid ships that are still in service due to: 1) operational details and capability is still classified and speculation leads to arguments. 2) ships in service generally leads to modern politics, which I want to avoid. So for example I'd happily cover the Perry class frigates, but if want to avoid the Burke class destroyers.

@@Drachinifel Ah ok now that makes a lot of sense about still commissioned ships, want to keep this part of youtube a nicer place compared to the rest of it! And it still gives you room to explore some cold war ships as well, a very good stance.

I'd like to see videos about the ships built in the period between WW2 and what we consider modern current ships. Up to say the Perry and Spruance era and comparable non US ships. The early guided missile boats would be particularly interesting as it marks a worldwide shift in armament and technology for naval warfare.

Suboptimal design by any standards. They should have tried to move the turrets more towards the center of the ship to make use of the broader hull there.
@zackakai5173

I've looked at various photos, models, blueprints, and as far as I can tell the barbettes for both the dual and triple mounts are the exact same diameter, so I don't think that was the reason for the somewhat unusual arrangement. If I had to speculate, I'd guess it was something to do with the space needed for the magazines deeper in the ship. A mount with three guns is obviously going to go through power and shells faster than a mount with two, so I wonder if that was the reasoning for the gun layout.

Like the new intros for this series and the Drydock (yes - it is still possible for non-patrons to view it earlier than the scheduled Sunday release), but I'm not sure there is such a word as "histriographer". A historiographer studies history writing, which is not what you do. I'm sure you deserve the appellation of historian.

#Q&A did the Pensacola have torpedoes? I can’t find the torpedos on the blueprint you posted. Or were they removed later in modifications to stay within weight limits? Additionally the WOW version of the ship does not offer torpedo tubes.

I'm at a loss from your rapid presentation in understanding why, on a narrow beam the triple turrets had to be the superfiring ones. Only thing I can figure is that the forward and aft turrets are at the narrowest points on the hull.
