I filmed this of Flight Ops aboard USS Saratoga (CV-60) during a Workup Cruise in December 1991, in preparation for the Sara's 1992, and second-to-last Med Cruise (before being Decommissioned in 1994). I was with Carrier Air Wing 17 serving in HS-9 "Sea Griffins" at the time. This video brings back some great memories!

Hi Jake, "Airman" Cline here! Amazing to hear from you! I began the main HS-9 Sea Griffins veterans page on Facebook way back in 2009. Please look for us there under "Sea Griffins of HS-9 (Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Nine)" and please request to join. We would LOVE to invite you back into the Griff fold! Command Master Chief Kline and I are the Admins of the group. We have over 250 former Griff's with us, and we'd love for you to join us, Jake! Please find us! Thanks, Chris Cline

Brings back memories for me. I served in Ranger (CVA-61) from 1968-'70. A lot of different aircraft, except the Intruders and Hawkeyes, but all the same sights and sounds. Thanks. 🫡

I'll never forget that amazing Mediterranean blue color, so unique from pacific and Atlantic. I can almost smell the steam mixing with the eye tearing , hot jp5 fumes in the exhaust rushing past me still kneeling with my thumbs in the air as our tomcats roared in full after burners down the cat. Vf-14 tophatters, flight deck final checker, elite of the fleet. Med cruises, carribeaen work ups. MNP forces Lebanon, op urgent fury, Beirut marine barracks bombing/evac . The Indy,Cv-62 81-84.

13:54 Tomcats carrying an AMRAAM? Looking pretty Sparrow-ie. I see someone pointed it out in another comment- In your defense at a glance they do look very similar- though the AMRAAM fins are quite a bit smaller than the Sparrow- probably the only feature visible in that shot.
@shadowwolfone4898
@shadowwolfone4898 5 месяцев назад
I was not an AO and one missile looks very much like another to me and I obviously misidentified that Sparrow as an AMRAAM, but I'm not going to delete this video just to re-edit it again to fix that very MINOR point. I have been told several times that it wasn't an AMRAAM now...Yes, I know, THANKS.

Not sure what in this video prompted the question about cell phones in 1991, but YES, we had cell phones in 1991, in fact, we had cell phone well back into the 80's. If you had one of what we referred to as the "brick" phones, which were made by Motorola, big, gray with a big black external antenna, they had very good range, and, if you knew how, you could connect them to cell signals if you were close enough offshore to cities which had cell towers and could make calls home. Guys used to make bank selling airtime to other sailors. Cell phones aren't that new a technology. We had email, too!😉
