What a team. They missed Kuznetsov in this final however. A key player for them, who was suspended because he was booked I think vs Italy in the semi final. Far from being outplayed by the Dutch, they actually had enough chances to score a few goals (including a missed penalty) in this game but it wasn't to be.

Another beautiful anthem was by the GDR, you may have disagreed with their systems, that's ok, but they were successful too in many things, such as classical music. I was the only fella as a 12 year old in 1988 on my Gaelic Football club bus going across the ferry to play two GAA matches in County Clare here in Ireland on exactly the very day of the the Final, that was supporting the Soviets. I was independent, different and proud as being the only one, out of 52 boys for doing so. To this day, it has stood to me. I loved this Soviet team, uniting Lithuanians, Byelrussians, Russians, Georgians and Ukrainians especially as all one. I loved their honesty and fair play.
The East German anthem was definitely a lot more emotive and hair-raising. The current German one (Deutschland über allies) sounds like it should be sung at a beer hall by a bunch of drunk men. 🍻
