Khan started his career by playing sarangi. He became popular after his debut concert in Kolkata.
Khan amalgamated the best of four traditions: his own Patiala-Kasur style, the Behram Khani elements of Dhrupad, the gyrations of Jaipur, and the behlavas (embellishments) of Gwalior. His voice had a wide range, spanning three octaves, effortless production, sweetness, flexibility and ease of movement in all tempi.[4]
After the partition of India in 1947, Khan returned to his home in Pakistan, but returned to India later to permanently reside there. He did not approve of the partition, stating: "If in every home one child was taught Hindustani classical music this country would never have been partitioned." In 1957, he acquired Indian citizenship and lived at various times in Lahore, Bombay, Calcutta, and Hyderabad.
He was reluctant to sing for films, but sang two songs based on ragas Sohni and Rageshree for the 1960 film Mughal-e-Azam, in which his voice was represented as Tansen's by the music director Naushad. To dissuade Naushad, he demanded a high price, reportedly Rs. 25,000/- per song, when the rate for popular playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi was below Rs. 500/- per song.
Khan was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1962.[5][6]
Khan was married to Ali Jiwai, who died in 1932. Khan's son, Munawar Ali Khan (1930--1989), was a classical singer. His grandson, Raza Ali Khan, is also a Hindustani classical singer.
Khan died in Hyderabad at Basheerbagh Palace in 1968, after a prolonged illness which left him partially paralyzed in his last years. He continued to sing and perform in public with the support of his son Munawar until his death.

How can we thank you Mr Uploader for this Masterpiece... In truth we can only thank those Great Singers who performed this and I sincerely thank Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Who I believe was the Tan'sen of his period!

I can't say he was the Tansen of his period, because i didn't listen to Tansen, so can't compare. the fact IS that the best of 20th century and up to now. absolutely no buddy rendered, beautifyed and upgraded swars as he did.

But you forget that he is indeed the Tansen of his period, a title K. Asif grandly gave to him in Mughal-E-Azam

Heard this khyal sung by BGA as part of a longer recording of Bihag. It was about forty years ago in a broadcast from AIR Vijayawada. Never found that recording again.

Sounds really great (these words are not enough to describe the greatness of his gaayaki). He is singing this as a bandish ki thumri. An unusual take on Bihag.
@gkdaeiaef
@gkdaeiaef 5 лет назад
What is so unusual, many thumris and expecially carved in bihag due to its pancham gandhar meendh. One such example is dekho sakhi.
@raqib56

@@gkdaeiaef ... dekho sakhi kanhaiyah roke ? (Am not quite convinced..).
@gkdaeiaef
@gkdaeiaef 5 лет назад
@rafay kashmiri No. In bihag. There are 2 versions one by devki pandit and one by ulhas kashalkar on youtube
@raqib56
@raqib56 5 лет назад
@@gkdaeiaef ...... Behag is Vilawal thaat raaga. Which versions were u referring to? Pandit /Kashalkar can't change or even modify the thaat. Only established Gharanah can interpret any raaga, It can only be Oudhava-Sampurna, 5 notes ascending & all 7 notes in descending. Vadi Ga, Arohi = Re & Dha are omitted in ascending notes, so Ni, Sa Ga, Ma, Pa------ ni, Sa, Re, sa

Ha ha...I can see Mr Joglekar being nice and polite. You have to be...it takes all sort of tastes to make this world...but Mr Mukherjee's opinion will not change what I once experienced in the presence of the Pakistani ghazal singer Ghulam Ali, who was singing at a friend's house in Colaba. The food for that small party was provided by the late Mr Pyrelal, the owner of Kwality Restaurant at Worli who was also one of the guests. Mr Pyarelal asked Ghulam Ali to sing Lat ulzi and the singer declined touching his ears saying Bade Ustadji had set such a unmatchable standard that it would be an affront (especially in front of people who had heard Bade Ghulam Ali Khansaheb in person). And this was a man who had learnt from the great Ustad's younger brother Barkat Alisaab. Likewise, Bhimsenji had the highest regard for Khansaheb's singing which, at its best, could not be compared to the music of other greats. In this respect the only other great who comes to mind is Ustad Abdul Karim Khan...Of course I loved Bhimsenji's music, too, and in fact, I even wrote his obituary for The Economic Times: here is the link: www.indianweekender.co.nz/Pages/ArticleDetails/35/2021/Personalities/Bhimsen-Joshi-Remembrance-of-melodies

It is blasphemy to the musically oriented to compare Two Greats. Only the uninitiated do it. What is needed is to sensitise them. My only request is not to expose your ignorance and lack of respect. Please keep out of these circles if it is your wont to put your foot in your mouth.
