I listen to Shakti since I was 17, I am a guitarist and the first time I tried to play some of them it was impossible, but everything is practical (although it is almost impossible LOL) . In India the study of music is very different from the West, it is not only practice on the instrument but also reaching a very special state of concentration to reach such mastery. I congratulate you for the video, you reminded me of the feeling I had when I took Shakti's first album home. Greetings from Argentina!

The still perform, the band is now called Remember Shakti, with newer members like Shankar Mahadevan on vocals. I was lucky enough to attend one of the concerts in 2012. Mesmerizing time.

Vikku also opened Zakir to the percussion style used in Southern India...Carnatic based. Actually both learnt a lot from each other!

So Mclaughlin got his guitar improvised with the additional strings below his fret to give it the depth of a sitar. So those strings are tied to a certain scale to give it more scalability

The Pot instrument is called Ghatam. It is used in Carnatic music .The ghatam is the same shape as an ordinary Indian domestic clay pot, it is made specifically to be played as an instrument. The tone of the pot must be good and the walls should be of even thickness to produce an even tone. The artist who played it is Viku Vinayakaram. Thanks for the reaction.

My dad's uncle knew John Mclaughlin personally. He was a connoisseur of Carnatic Music and organized concerts for people like Mclaughlin, Mandolin Srinivas, Balamuralikrishna --> all three of these legends were personal friends of his and even played a friendly concert for a while at his son's wedding, which I attended as an 8 year old in 1997.

I'm glad you took my suggestion. Loved your reaction, just what I expected. Btw that's not an Indian Guitar, it's McLaughlin's own modification of a guitar to sound like a sitar, he called it the Gitar.

This was another otherworldly experience. I was same as you guys. The level of artistry Indian classical music has, damn!? This took me to another world. 4 masters just having fun together. I don't have any words.

It warmed this boomers heart to see your reaction to “Joy” by John McLaughlin & Shakti @ the (Montreux Live 1976). My cousin from Baltimore knew I liked John McLaughlin and his band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. All my cousin knew was John McLaughlin was going to be at a collage in Balt. He came to my house in Philly, told me to get in the car, and we proceeded back to Balt. The concert was in a basketball court, with the stands pushed back and plastic sheeting on the floor to shield it from scuff marks. Every one sat on the floor. I was close to the stage if you can call it that. I seen the clay pot (Ghatam) and was thinking WTF is he gonna do with that. Then seen the Tabla set and was wondering “where is the drum set” and started to worry about what to expect. Shakti opened with “Joy”. I was like the post boomer on the right with my mouth wide open, my heart was soaring and I had tears in my eyes at what I saw and heard. All intense/good music is like sex. Tension builds up and then there is a release. “Joy” is almost all ejaculation. Check out this tune from the Mahavishnu Orchestra. “One Word”

In 2003, John Mclaughlin was ranked 49th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". In 2010, Jeff Beck called McLaughlin "the best guitarist alive".
