Awesome journey through the gnarliest bits of the UTBDR! Unfortunately that Utah weather will win if it wants to. No shame in calling it... the trails north would have been impassible in a 4x4 with all the mud. Still... the Lockhart Basin is no joke! Well done through there!!!

I was in Moab May 14/15 2019 on my Tiger 800, just touring on tarmac. I hit Monument Valley on the 16th and winds started picking up. Checked the weather and tore down my camp and bolted to the warmth of a hotel in Flagstaff for a couple days while it poured, clearly the storm that caught you guys. Well done for riding it out.

Thank you and thank you!! Had a dirt bike when I was young (20) and rode the woods, strip mine and coal fields of Tuscaloosa and Brookwood Counties (AL) with a dear friend. That was 49 years ago. Over the years, I've driven motorcycles of all types - all owned by friends. It's been a dream of mine to take a cross country motorcycle trip since I was 13. Unless something remarkable happens, videos like yours are as close as I''ll ever get. Vicarious though they are, your videos are a treasure and better than any production from the Film Factory. There is an unseen uncool group of us out here who value your work more than you know. P.S. I don't claim your riding skills for one second. Day after tomorrow, my butt will unscrinch from watching your descent from the top of that hill.

Thanks for the kind words. Its comments like that that make the video process worth it. The whole point of me making these videos isnt to make the tiny bit of money youtube offers but to allow those as you said live through the experience as if they were there too and hopefully one day get out and do trip like this. I hop you are wrong when you say you will most likely never get out on a trip across the country. One think Ive learned, When there is a will, there is always a way! Just go for it!

A lighter bike is usually a better choice but not a cool I guess. I've owned heavy and middle weights and survived these type of trips. Tiger 12, 8, KLR, XR etc. The KTM690ER is my bike now. 315lbs dry and under 380 loaded for a week trip with ultralight pack gear and an extra gallon. Never looking back.

Nothing really shows how difficult that southern approach to Moab is like this. Great job guys. I did this with the family in the Tacoma except we moved much..much slower. What was the cause of the low oil pressure on the GS 800? Also, how many years of riding experience you guys have under your belt, ONLY one in a THOUSAND GS riders can tackle such trails, amazing. Thanks for sharing this nightmare!
@backcountryadvmoto
@backcountryadvmoto 4 года назад
First off thanks for the compliment. We have been riding big bike together for about 15 years or so. We love the challenge of riding big bikes like smaller dual sports. Maybe we are just dumb or have a few screws loose, but we just like putting ourselves through the tough stuff. So oil pressure light ended up not being oil pressure related at all. My buddy Dan carries a GS911 tool and it indicated the fan was staying on and not switching off. (apparently the fan and oil pressure light share the same light) So after checking a few connections it was a loose connection at the fan relay. Thanks for watching!

That ratio sounds about right. I've known one. The pilot not only needs the skill and common sense to pick a good line far enough ahead, plus be able to react to the random forces knocking the bike around, while also being physically large and strong enough to be able to use the ground when necessary to correct trajectory.

We ran Lockhart over Hurrah Pass, same direction you did. We had a 950 Adventure with us, but the other 4 of us were on lighter DS bikes. The guy on the 950 was waxed when we finished! Had a Yamaha break the crank gear and lock up halfway through! Spend several hours at the intersection just after you come out of the hard shit in the canyon decent. Finally got back to the hostel about midnight...fun shit, I’d do it again! Maybe not on my Twin though, but maybe! Enjoying the vids brother!! 🤘🏼

Biker Sasquatch thanks for watching. I’ve ran this section the opposite direction 4 other times out of Moab, but never this way. This way was definitely easier than trying to ride up everything lol. I’m a bit psycho though, and love the challenge. Safe riding, and looks out for more videos to come 👍🏻

Haha.... Yeah, who ordered the weather? At 23:12 I thought you kept whispering.,"Shit.... Shit". Good stuff, had some good laughs. Stellar riding man. " If it ain't raining, it ain't........ Adventure riding?"

+lawrence martins haha I’m sure I did at some point, but going back and watching it, I think it was the background music at that point. I love riding that area. I’ve done it dozens of times and it’s addicting. Thanks for following along

i always enjoy your videos, you have great skills but why do you torture yourself? I get it...it must be the challenge. Are you ever going to do the TAT? I'd love to see that video.
@backcountryadvmoto
@backcountryadvmoto 4 года назад
East Coast I’m going to be honest, it is challenging, but it’s not torture. Maybe I have a screw or two loose 😂. Yes, I’d love to do the TAT one of these days. It’s not in the cards in the near future though. Hard part here is living in the west side of the country, there is just Soooo much good riding that it mushes rides like that down the list a little. I will do it for sure eventually though. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

The 1250gsa couldn’t even make it through some of those sections could it? Looks like the engine would get hung up. Great job! The trips that don’t go as planned are the ones you remember the most.

It totally can. Just got to be real picky on your lines. I’ve ridden this section multiple times with guys on the GS and we all make it through just fine. Running this section south to North is easier than going north to south. It can be done going north to south but there is one section that is really hairy and steep and loose that makes it usually a team effort to get big bikes up and threw it. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching

Nice! We were on the BDR in May also. Got into the snow by Bears Ears pass and decided to skip around to Monticello and into Indian Creek. Called it in Moab and stayed to ride there were the weather was good. Did Lockhart N to S. amazing!

Wow amazing, as a UK rider we have nothing remotely like that, sights and rides, we're lucky if you can do about 3-4 miles off road in one go. Its hopeless here for riding off road. If we want anything similar to you we have to cross over to France or Spain where they are a lot more biker friendly and have more open country where you can ride off road from prolonged periods. Great watch thanks for sharing

Great work in Lock Hart. As you said, it will test you. I broke my right collar bone riding my R1200GS about 15 miles in in Aug 2016. I won’t take that big of a bike in there ever again. You guys did great.

Thanks for watching. It is tough for sure. Some of the section can change drastically every year. Ive ridding the lockhart section both ways many times and its different nearly every time

Second Utah BDR video in a row that had to call it in the same area. I'm sitting in Sedona watching the temperatures North of me waiting to jump on the trail. I'm wondering if it's just cold fronts that blew through during your trips. I have a big window to get it done and wait for a good weather. It's April 3rd and Moab is getting around 70 degrees but it's the high mountains that will cause problems. Looks to me like summer is better though people complain about the heat.

This was VERY unusual weather for this time of year. I was in the Moab area literally 3 weeks prior and it was in the 80s. The temps just days before were in the high 70s so it just was a fluke front that came through. This area is 5000 to 9000 ft elevation so weird things can happen. Especially in the Spring
