A rocky road is ahead for the Utah Railway, as they now must adapt without pulling coal trains for the first time in their history. After losing their coal contract in December of 2016, they now only pull a few road trains from Provo, UT to Helper, UT a week. In addition, the extremely rare Utah Railway SD50S's and MK5000's (MK50-3's) are losing their red and yellow colors as Genesee & Wyoming is continuing to repaint them into the well known black and orange colors. With all this taken into consideration, seeing a large consist of a Utah painted SD50S leading MK5000's with a large train of tankers over Soldier Summit is becoming more unusual today. On February 16th, 2017, train HUTAHJ-16, lead by UTAH 6063, took a large string of tankers and hoppers to the railroad's home base in Helper, UT. This video shows the full chase of the train battling Soldier Summit and beyond. Enjoy!

Thanks Matt!!! I agree that it will. I would have never dreamed that I'd be able to see them run in their red & yellow scheme. It was a great experience

12:24 5004 is parked on the ready track with the rest of the locomotives a week from the day that the video was made Utah rail sold 5004 to Kyle Railroad the two units on the train 5003 and 5005 are kept at Utah Rail for the time being the other units that are coupled to 5004,5001,5002, and 5006 are being ready to take the loaded oil train back to Salt Lake they will be serviced at Midville and will return to Provo where BNSF will pick them up and take them to Denver.

Great video! Just a few corrections; the location you call Spanish Fork is not Spanish Fork. That's the beginning of the Red Narrows, what the railroad called Castilla; Spanish Fork is the town 15 miles to the west near the mouth of the canyon. The location "east of Lynn" is the site of the town of Castle Gate. The Utah Railway facilities are in Martin, not Helper.

Thanks for the corrections Josh. Not as easy to tell location wise, unlike here lol

The Spanish Fork label is actually at Rio. Technically it is the begging of Narrows but every railroader I've talked with says that spot is considers as being Rio. Also fun fact. Rio Grande Called it Red Narrows and UP just calls it Narrows. The Up/ Utah Railway Interchange spot is called Utah Railway Junction.

Update as of April 6, 2017 all MK's have been sold to Kyle Railway the only locomotive left on the railroad are the BHP SD 50s plus the SD60 owned by Savage and Garfield.
@Mkai2000
@Mkai2000 7 лет назад
Savage is a whole different railroad and Utah Railway will not touch them, Utah Railway owns the SD50S series units, their GP38-3's and GP40-2's. Also the MK50-3's were NOT sold, they were transfered from one G&W subsidiary (Utah Railway) to another (Kyle) due to Utah Railway losing their coal contract to UP and supposedly "not needing the bigger mainline power" so they just transfered railroads. In other words G&W didn't give a shit about Utah Railway and their coal contract so they didn't bother giving a higher bid than UP.

Aaron Peavler/Geomodelrailroader Railroad Photography Thanks for your corrections, I just kept the info on what other local railfans gave me. I guess being in the middle of nowhere gives people conflicting locations

Great video. Do you know how often this job runs, or do you know any good online sources for info on the Utah Railway? Thanks very much.
@FrasierMedia
@FrasierMedia 7 лет назад
Sadly, this job runs very sporadically anymore. The MK50-3's were all just shipped to another railroad, so only the SD50S's are pulling this train (when it runs). Crew time and it's job frequency varies, sometimes once or twice a week. Gotta go down to Provo or Martin in the morning and get lucky!

The units on this train will be kept in Utah for time being all but two of the MKs have been sold to Kyle two of the SD fifties are having mechanical problems so they need the MKs until Utah rail can sell those and there will only be four SD fifties on the Utah Railway the last two MKs will be sold to Kyle when Utah Rail get it's new engines this year. Utah Rail still has SD 40s but they sold most of them.

Gotta say the video is great except for the microphone making everything sound like streetcars. Noise of the train Keeps overloading it.

I agree with ya! I focus on photography and didn't really put much effort in filming on this trip, which I do regret not bringing my microphone along for. Sorry about that
