This law is a enhancer. It's similar to hate crime laws. You get charged with the underlying offense, and on top of that you get charged with the the road rage, which increases the potential sentence. It also can create a chargeable offense, if the behavior falls short of the existing laws, but is still deemed a problem. Think about a driver who comes close to ramming you or forcing you off the road, but doesn't make any contact. They might not have violated any existing laws, but the behavior is still bad. This new law allows you to punish them too.
REALLY? You never saw me driving when I was 15-17, road rage was the norm, but I guess only people that commit road are adults. I like what the other guy said "how much of a saint you all claim to he. Everyone is just 1 bad day away from a prison sentence"

Yup, we never look at the CAUSES! Americans are stressed. One missed paycheck from financial disaster. The boss forces you to sign non-compete and binding arbitration agreements. List of assaults on workers is endless. No wonder America suffers so many side-effects of rapacious capitalism.
@@dudeonbike800 I might be a communist, but I don't agree with this assessment. Americans are just flat out entitled and immature, lacking in discipline and honour thanks to terrible parenting. As an OTR trucker I've certainly encountered plenty of road rage out here. I feel the only way to rectify the issue would be to completely overhaul our licensing and driver education system, and ramp up the penalties for bad driving behaviors. There are far too many drivers out here on the road that shouldn't be behind the wheel in the first place. Another issue is urban planners and developers in the government laying out out cities poorly. We need better availability for people to be able to walk or bicycle for home to a store or work. It doesn't cost anywhere near as much to build and maintain footpaths separate from roads and adequate sidewalks in areas that lack them.
I believe it won't really subside until the penalties include losing your vehicle. That's a big time hit on the wallet/budget, and pretty sure they won't do it again.
@@kevino4846 Don't need to take someones property, just revoke their license and make them attend a full safety and training class.(Verifiable with the state DOT/DMV) I'd say at bare minimum the course should be 4-6 weeks, and be fully comprehensive in class and on road or closed course. Pretty sure they'll either behave after, or they can go right back to the same safety course 'again' if they want to act out again. Pretty sure nickel and diming them and making them spend a period of time in a training course would be enough of a deterrent. Or they can just car pool, take public transit like a train or bus, a taxi, a bicycle, or walk. Public transport works better when there's more demand for it and it's self funded by those demanding customers. Plus hey then it cuts down on traffic congestion, reduces emissions, reduces wear and tear on roads, brings down insurance premiums, and improves overall safety on the road. Personally I like walking or riding my bicycle around. I keep a folding bicycle in my truck with me, in case I wanna explore or just go grab groceries. Keeps me in shape too. (No shortage of walking blimps at the truck stops 😅)

Because they take less crap from people in little cars LOL. A little car usually isn't going to pick a fight with a truck, the car will just be destroyed or under the truck while the truck will drive home so there isn't much a fight, but when it's a truck well it can take some abuse and if it's not against another truck then well unless the car causes the truck to roll over then it doesn't have much a chance. Your seeing alot of these pickups in these situations because there are MILLIONS of them sold, most men prefer a truck as we don't urinate sitting down so we don't want a little soft car LOL. Oh yeah I don't have a pickup truck crap. lol. Pickup trucks are too small for me, I prefer the medium duty stuff.
@@scruf153 ...gonna be honest, I've never seen an interstate or limited-access highway that allows bicyclists or pedestrians. And I live in a state where we share the surface streets & back roads with horse-drawn carriages.
It can't be. That's how you pull out someone who's stuck in snow. And how police officers take down speeders. That law could also be used against innocent people: If other drivers intentionally block your car, you wouldn't be able to legally push theirs out of the way.
@@rugbynimbus Displaced anger isn't something the road rager is thinking about when they act out in anger towards another person on the highway. Road ragers target the innocent victim with pent up rage to get revenge because most road ragers are selfish they don't want anyone else on the road but them. Until road ragers change their attitude through their hopefully learning of the stricter laws concerning road rage on our nations highways. When the road ragers know beforehand the consequences of their violent acts and if they commit any violent offense with intent towards another driver on the highway which ultimately causes emotional and/or physical harm to the Innocent victim - the road ragers will never stop their erratic behavior.
Brake checking itself is not a crime, but it is considered reckless driving, which is. It's up to the police to prosecute it as such, but it is difficult to prove in court. Prosecutors only try cases they know they will win, so it's up to legislatures to write better laws.
Why other states it’s illegal to sit in the passing lane and not pass. So other states do not have road rage problems. They are going after the wrong person. Make a law for the passing lane is for passing only and let traffic flow problems solved.
@@MrWiseinheart Should be, but common practice in smaller communities. Had a road trip (motorcycles) with a couple of guys who had never heard of counter-steering or how it worked. Fortunately, caught that in time.

Along with not going 10+ under the posted speed limit or 10+ over. Most people today treat speed limit signs like an incurable fatal disease that instakills you if you drive within 10 mph of it.

I dislike road rage just as much as the next guy. The problem with the new law is that it gives the government too much freedom to punish people. If a cop is having a bad day, and a person driving safely that hates cops, gives the cop the bird. We'll now I can see the cop abusing this new law and claim the safe driver is now a road rage driver. We shouldn't be giving open ended power like this to the government. They will abuse it.
I totally agree here. I simply waved at a sheriff this week and he just gave me a smug look. Smhuh….i am not a fan of cops in general though either. They completely abuse their power.
This Ram driver , his ego is bigger then what he thinks he truck is. Never trust a Dodge Ram driver... Im dead serious It's like they are pissed off they bought one of the most expensive, trashily made American pickups on the road
It's about time a state cracks down on this mess. Especially with those who drive 80+ on the highways expecting the speed limit to be optional. Do you not value other lives on the road? You not only put yourself in danger but also the drivers around you.
Here's an idea. If you're are fined with road rage incident, allow auto insurance double the premium. That'll stop road rage almost instantly. Money talks...

They don't punish either. Just recently a woman in my town received her 13th DUI conviction. They just give them a fine and a slap on the wrist and they immediately go out and do it again. This will help if all the states participate in this. What will also help is people to prevent road rage in the first place too, like no camping in left lanes, not intentionally cutting other people off. If we all would respect each other’s space, all will be kosher.
I would personally prefer to see more enforcement of people using their indicators and or not cruising in the fast lane that could get rid of a lot of this
Left lane hogs cause most of the 'rage 'incidents I see. Follow someone in the left who isn't passing for miles, and a whole line of cars vie to move right and back again. Most states have laws to prevent camping in the left driving lane. Cracking down on left lane cruisers would stop a significant amount of 'rage'.
There is no such thing as a fast lane. There is only the speed limit, and a colloquial term that somehow made its way into law, despite its inaccuracy. But I do agree, more enforcement should be administered on the small things. Can't tell you how many times I've nearly been hit, because people run stop signs and say they were "stopping," when they were doing a California Maneuver.
@@takedown205productions6 “There is no such thing as a fast lane. “ We concur. Exactly the truth. I hope you realize how many bed wetters you will upset because you spoke the facts. After all, they have a “right” to speed. Excessive vehicle speed is one of the leading causes of accidents. But don't tell that to the passing lane bed wetters. As for traffic enforcement, it is nonexistent in Phoenix. Every day I travel down the same stretch of street with a posted limit of 40 mph. If you're not making 20 over, then you travel with life in hands. No turning/lane change signals. No stopping for red lights. Red light running, texting while driving. None of this seems to bother the “passing lane” bed wetters. Just get out of their way. After all, speeding is their god-given right......A god-given right to be the first at the next red light.

First offense of driving aggressively where you’re tailgating someone or brake checking them anything like that should be a mandatory one year suspension of your license. If you don’t learn your lesson after that, it should be mandatory jail time and if you don’t like that, then learn to control your emotions and keep your stuff together and be polite on the road.
I’m a truck driver in Utah (local now) and I’m telling you what, Utah has the WORST drivers on the globe. No blinkers no use of hazards no common courtesy…. NOTHING. People tailgate…. Just a "feel good" law, nothing is going to change... Very similar to any gun "laws", criminals don't pay attention to laws, hence them being criminals...
Yeah...that won't backfire at all. The problem with these people is they have no regard for the law in that moment, clearly. All you've done is increased the precident of risk vs reward. So now instead of a simple road rage incident(Not like in the video) just a honk, maybe a brake check. Well now that you are potentially risking the felony for that behaviour, the way their minds work, they're gonna go all in. If the punishment for brake checking you and flipping you off is the same as actually running you off the road, then they're always going to choose running you off the road.
"Penalties for speeding need to be quadrupled, at least." Doesn't matter what the penalty for speeding is since such a small fraction of speeders get pulled over.
Nobody enforces speed limits unless you're into triple digits, even then it's iffy to see a racer get stopped. It's so bad many drivers claim you're "impeding traffic" if you're doing 0-5 over and they want to blast by doing 100+.
@@arthurdavis1065 exactly but gives idiot people too much power. So no evidence not witnesses by law enforcement they could lie and try and have you charged
