The red desert landscape of MONUMENT VALLEY is one of the symboles of the American Southwest. The red color is due to a ground rich in iron oxide.
When visiting Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, make sure to enjoy the main viewpoint on the sandstone buttes, to drive the unpaved scenic drive, and to stop by the main gift shop. For a more in-depth experience, book a guided tour (by horse or by Jeep) with the locals.
Outside of the Tribal Park, you can head North to the tiny village of Mexican Hat, known for an intriguing sombrero-like rock formation. You can stop by GOOSENECKS State Park, which consists in a gray canyon with many curves, and drive through the unpaved roads of Moki Dugway and the Valley of the Gods. There are some free camping spots in these areas.
