Utility Sink Installation - The Drain

Check out this video to see the conclusion of the utility sink installation. In this video I am using an old garden hose section to complete the drain for this project for under $5. Whenever I try to do projects like this I always like to use up things I have laying around before I go out and buy new parts. I would love to have done a full 1 1/2" drain pipe all the way over to the sump but had this broken garden hose laying around and could not resist trying to use it as the drain.
I picked up a couple of fittings to transition from the 1 1/2" PVC male adapter on the bottom of the utility tub to a 3/4" threaded male hose connection. Total cost was under $5 for those parts and the rest was made with a piece of hose.
The connection was simple, glue the pvc fittings together, hook up the hose, and run it over to the sump about 8 feet away. I then tested the drain rate by filling the tub up and letting it drain and running water continuously for about 5 minutes. The hose seems to keep up and drain the tub just fine so I am going to clal this a success for now.
The only concern I have is that the smaller diameter hose may get clogged easily if anything gets flushed down the drain like small pebbles, dirt, etc. I will keep you updated if this turns into a pain in the long term.

Great idea. I set up a toilet like this in the attic I just drilled a hole in my roof and the garden hose drains into my neighbors back yard

Honestly I did a very similar thing, I found an old galvanized wash tub on the side of the road but the drains were 3/4inch, so instead of messing around with all the fittings I bought a water mixing hose and a utility drain pipe for a air conditioner drain and led it to the floor drain in my basement! Good enough for me

I did something similar in my basement. We needed a utility sink between the washer and dryer. I put a 5 gallon bucket under the drain, and placed a sump pump in it draining tot he washer drain, the floor crock sump, wasn't easily accessible. Works like a charm. I looked into have a U. sink installed with the pump, and it was around $1,000. Unbelievable. I did the whole setup, purchasing everything new, for under $200. I like your idea better (Free) but I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time...LOL> Great vid, love the channel. Thanks for sharing this, Dave.

@@oldtimerlee8820 looool apparently jacks plumbing videos does stalk this video since he replies to EVERY comment saying “it’s not code”. Clearly he doesn’t have much business if he has that much time to always be commenting. I did a similar set up in a previous house with a galvanized wash tub where I put a Y mixing hose with a ac utility drain hose and it drained into a empty opening into my plumbing stack in the basement… when I had a home inspection done at the house buyers request he never said a word about it in the report and also in my sales contract they wanted the main water shut off valve replaced (it was dripping) so the local plumber had to place a permit to turn the water off at the curb stop and the inspector from the city looked around at other plumbing stuff, and also never said a word about how it was drained. Who cares if it’s “code” or not for a freaking utility sink… I did the same drain set up as I mentioned above just into my flood drain.

Great video. Question, I'm removing my sink to a few feet over and the adapter connected to the drain won't budge. I'm going to assume it's glued down as you did to ensure no leaks ... Any ideas on how to remove it without damaging the 1 1/2 drainage from the sink

Great video. Is there any risk that the remnant pigment of water-based paints would damage the sump pump motor if I were to choose to use this method of draining directly into the sump?

I don't wanna be difficult here, but as a home inspector, I'd be extremely opposed to a utility sink just draining outside onto the ground. That's a no-no.

just had the house inspected, no issues with that. In Michigan it is extremely common to have a utility sink in the basement near a laundry area that drains into a sump crock. Not sure where you are but the rules might be a bit different.

SSLFamilyDad. My water softener drain is next to my utility sink, so that is where i tapped into for my sink drain. Same goes for my water source. I installed a T-joint from the water softener.

You don’t need a p trap if you are draining to a floor drain or dump crock. You can drain a utility sink however you want in most cases. If you are connecting to a sewer or septic drain you need the right size pipe and a p trap

can we also drain the garden hose up into the washer drain? it is above the level of the sink though but would suction push it UP and out that way or will that not work?

Why after all these years have they not designed a utility sink with leveling lets?????? Many people put these in their basements, and not all basements are new and perfectly level.

+Sean McCafferty You can legally dump drain water into a sump. It is really not much different than our septic which basically dumps into the dirt in our backyard in a way. It is up to you what you put down the drain I suppose. It would be a bad idea to put a bunch of chemicals down there if it just is going to contaminant your yard.

You can use this sink/drain set up, but only if you plan to not use soap or anything you are washing in it is completely organic materials. Many areas in Michigan have sump pumps drain into storm drains, unless if you know your sump is drained into a sewage line, do NOT do this.

This is in no way illegal in Michigan at least. This goes to a sump crock and pumps out into our yard not into a storm drain

Even Flow, there are many places where this is legal. I appreciate the video, as it is useful to me. I don't live anywhere near a "storm drain" either. The water would go into my backyard. The same place where grey water from my car washing goes. Far enough from my well and septic system not to cause any problem with either.

would probably need to drill a hole through the wall and just drain outside, that is probably the easiest way to go

Insulate the garage if you plan on having water pipes in it, install garage heater etc..or the pipes will burst due to cold

Cant help but think your going to ruin your sump pump if you put anything other than water down that drain.

This is a major code violation you need to use the proper pvc pipe not a garden hose and not drain into the sump pump. you must drain it into the drain stack. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s correct

Yes you’re a professional plumber (apparently) but sometimes people don’t care about what’s up to code and whatever. Sometimes we just need a quick fix to get a job done, and worry about the inspector when and if the time comes and fix it then. No body cares about your opinion, worry about your own plumbing jobs.
