If only Curly and Larry would have stood up to Moe just as Laurel had always stood up to Hardy. I've always found it hilarious when Hardy would often try to bully Laurel. But Laurel wasn't having any part of it. The way he would give him a double dose of his own medicine was slap stick comedy at its finest. May the greatest duo in comedy ever forever be resting in peace.

Great point! Once in a while Curly (or Shemp) & Larry would gang up on Moe. Usually it was Moe & Larry against Curly or Shemp, usually when a toothache was involved or Curly had to climb to the top of the three high bunk beds. Oddly they never used that 3 high bunk bed routine with any other third stooges after Curly.

That ideal should never be shamed. It's usually from younger people who don't like being reminded of what's coming no matter what. But we will all want people to support us to keep going for as long as possible, so we all need to pay it forward and do our part and give praise to any older folk who are still fighting the good fight.

Stan is only 60 here, but looks quite frail and much older 'In 1950, Laurel and Hardy were invited to France to make a feature film. The film was a disaster, a Franco-Italian co-production titled Atoll K. (The film was entitled Utopia in the US and Robinson Crusoeland in the UK.) Both stars were noticeably ill during the filming. Upon returning to the United States, they spent most of their time recovering. In 1952, Laurel and Hardy toured Europe successfully , and they returned in 1953 for another tour of the continent. During this tour, Laurel fell ill and was unable to perform for several weeks.' from Wikipedia, so it makes sense.

Stan was 59 here and Ollie 57. For comparison purposes, Tom Cruise is now 61 and Brad Pitt is 60. It's a fact that people who were born before about 1935 aged a lot faster. What slowed the process down is unclear, but you can see it with your own eyes.

@@teastrainer3604 Interesting observation. I thought Stan was sick making this - he seems extra "thin" in this film. It's a little disconcerting watching a classic Rod Serling "TWILIGHT ZONE" episode when Rod does his narration and states the character's age as 26 years old and the actor playing the role looks like he's in his mid 40s.

Both Laurel and Hardy were seriously ill during the making of this movie. It is perfectly obvious that Laurel was in much more serious condition, based on his physical appearance in this movie. However, ultimately he managed to fully recover and lived for 15 more years. On the other hand, Hardy who was in not such a bad condition at the time his health quickly deteriorated after the making of this movie and he died in 1957.

BTW, I happened to play WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE on the computer. After Regis Philbin asked "Final answer?" I hit the "n" button on a keyboard, which is no. Then it's who said this in a row: Alright, well, I'll give u ten more seconds to think about. Alright, that's fine. Take ten more seconds to think it over. Okay, I'll give u ten more seconds to modded over. Okay, I'll give u ten seconds to reconsider. U didn't seem a little hesitant, I'll give u ten more seconds to think about. I said, "Whatever." I'm going to say it again, this movie March of the wooden soldiers was released black & white in '34. The idea is I always like to watch this video of a wonderful movie with the two boys Dee Plays by Oliver Hardy & Dum plays by Stan Laurel in called, "March of the wooden soldiers 1954." I'd rather say that a movie played again in '54, remastered color on VHS with Samuel Goldwyn in '91, & a DVD remastered colorized one in 2006. Do they have the same birth year???? My Father's birth year is 1954, & Uncle 1955. My Mama's birth year, & Aunt is 1957. Well, the other Aunt is 1961. Best wishes, this is Michael Meneses.

@johno4521
@johno4521 Год назад
During the production, the two were battling serious health issues. Laurel's pre-existing diabetes was aggravated and he developed colitis, dysentery and a prostate ulcer while on the French locations for the film. He eventually required hospitalization, and his widow would later fault the quality of the French medical care, claiming that at one point, she had to substitute for an absent nurse by changing her husband's bandages. Laurel's weight dropped to 114 pounds, and for most of the production he was able to work for only 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Due to this and many other production problems, the movie took a year to complete, instead of the scheduled 1 month. They were also very unhappy making movies in the post Hal Roach years. They resented their treatment by subsequent studios, especially MGM, who treated them as jobbing actors, allowed them no creative input and even dictated what they had to wear; formerly always the responsibility of Stan Laurel.

Agree I see why it didnt go down well at the time. They changed to fox different writers, they were allowed no improvisations like they usually do. The story was far more serious and complicated than their other movies. Some jokes were funny but some were over the top even more so than the past and didnt hit the spot. Its not Stan and Ollies fault. Ollie was also ill making this but yiu dont see it on his face like Sran. He is just very much larger. They wrote out Ollies shy whimsical self with his wave and tie fudgeting and sorry look. I read in one scene it looks like Stan aged 10 years but he looked it throughout to me. It was rather sad to see. Only Stan and Ollie didnt seem to be dubbed. Im sure the other actors were speaking another language. It was so different to their usual films. Roach Hall sould not have been so greedy. 2 yrs after this Ollie was half the size if not less. It was also sad to see him this obese. I laughed but nowhere near as much as usual. Same with toy soldiers.

It is well known fact that both Laurel and Hardy hated this movie and neither of them ever watched the finished movie. This came from Stan Laurel's daughter Lois, who said that her father refused to see the finished movie, even though he lived for another 15 years. This, along with Hardy's death in 1957, contributed to Laurel's decision to never make another movie, which made this one his and Hardy's final movie appearance both together and separately. Lois Laurel also said that her father hoped that this movie would be a total flop and that nobody would care about it. While this movie indeed was a total flop when it was released, it has not been forgotten. There is one very simple explanation for this. This is the only movie Laurel and Hardy ever made that eventually fell into public domain. Therefore, it is the easiest to obtain out of all the movies they ever made, as they all are still copyright by studios that made them.

These two men are historic in comedy film and to this day are legendary it is a shame they was treated like has been, when they came over to England they was put in a b&b as if life was done for them they went home and it more or less went down hill for them with depression and I'll health , and yet we still watch them to this day if only they knew.

The biggest problem with this movie was that Laurel and Hardy were the only two people speaking English in the entire cast and crew. All others were French who had their lines dubbed in English in post-production. Hardy said in his rare interviews about this movie that this made the already troubled production even more of a Hell. This is in contrast to about 20 years earlier when the pair made foreign-language versions of their shorts and read their lines phonetically off cue cards - when sound was in its infancy and dubbing was not yet done.

I had no problems with watching this film by my favorite Laurel and Hardy. Why be so picky or go learn another language. I’m American and speak several languages and lived in China 20 years. I speak Chinese ( Mandarin and Cantonese) and several Spanish, French, Italian. I’m enjoying the film. I admit Laurel looks sick but he still has the comedic genius 😅Take and enjoy the film for what it is and quite dated.

@@GeneRogers-xl9um Totally agree. If it was dubbed, it was very well done (compared to today). So, what problem? Also, why should everybody speak English, or at least, not only some other languages. I could watch this in French, Italian, Spanish and then some.

I have watched all of Laurel and Hardys Films up and down, dozens if not a hundred of times. This is the only exception. I even have snippets from the "original voice overs" where the two of them mimic a foreign language by speaking in the words of french or german by simply saying the words as they were taught and learned to, this was to save money on dubbing, the original actors trained with a linguistics expert to "speak" the foreign language. But this is the only one I will never watch. I have seen stills, and Stanleys terrible health is so upsetting in this. The two of them were basically constantly sick during the filming of the movie, Stanley had lost a lot of weight and Babe could hardly film and stand at most days, the climate and weather wore them down. I am sure Babes strokes were aggravated by the stress he was under during normal filming but this movie took some years off of their life clocks for sure, as sad as it sounds. I cannot watch this movie, partially because the script was terrible and Stan actually reworked about 90% of the script himself, because it was so poorly written, but still, it could not save the movie, it has a bad reputation, always had even on release day. But seeing the two of them sick, and knowing that the producers literally whipped them into still performing, albeit a blind man seeing that the two of them are really sickly, is just terrible. I hope that this movie brings great joy to some people, since it is the last movie with those two amazing artists and performers, but I just cannot bear to watch it.

Of course it's sad to see Stan particularly so unwell, but he recovered. Ollie did start having some heart issues at this time but the two were still robust enough to embark on 2 European tours in the years following this. The film wasn't the happiest experience for them - but Stans work on the script paid off - it's far better than their Fox films, and it has some substance as a satire too. Plus the film has a number of enjoyable scenes with the boys. Would it have been easier to watch if they were in better health? certainly. Would it have been funnier if they'd had a better director than Leo Johannon, damn straight it would've been. Personally I wish they had Preston Sturges - that could have worked wonderfully. But all in all I'm glad they made one more film together after the Twentieth Century Fox years, and especially a film which treats them as the beloved clowns they always were, young or old.

This is pretty funny; unfortunately its 1950 and Abbott and Costello and Jerry Lewis are en vogue. George Burns, The Marx Brothers, Jimmy Durante, Groucho Marx is a solo act, Bob Hope, Sid Ceasar. . . 1950 was too crowded for Laurel and Hardy and both actors had been stars since 1920.

As a lifelong Laurel & Hardy fan I am perplexed why they consented to make this movie at all. Sometimes called Atoll K along with Robinson Crusoeland these movies were not worthy of the title of a Laurel & Hardy movie. Especially Robinson Crusoeland - a sad failure that also happened to be the final film of the duo's incredible career. Utopia was in my opinion not only a mistake but a costly blunder to their reputation, as those fans that went to see this movie witnessed a rather melancholy duo rather than the comedic genius they had come to expect. Both men were in ill health making this movie which was clearly obvious during much of their scenes. Especially Stan Laurell who looks dreadfully ill at times and looked "like death warmed up" as one UK critic remarked at the time. Again it pains me as a lifelong Laurel & Hardy fan to say perhaps it would have been better if the movie Utopia had never been made.

@@robfriedrich2822 Sadly towards the end of their career the movies had dried up, although they were still popular in the UK. My father was a great fan and that's where I got bitten. My father saw them in 1954 not long before they retired they were performing at the Empire Theatre Glasgow. I remember him telling me how unwell the pair looked then, especially poor Olie.
