They say “never start with an apology”, so we won’t. Not everyone loves vintage guitars - in fact many people think it’s all a load of pish. Dan and I are not such people and so we took this opportunity to visit ATB Guitars in Cheltenham, UK and fill our boots with an afternoon of complete and utter kids-in-a-sweetshop indulgence.
There is no real point to this video, other than to remind ourselves that it’s only this very moment that ever matters; simply to do and to experience.
MASSIVE thanks to Mike and David at ATB for making us so welcome and letting us have the run of the store! www.atbguitars.com/ Instagram @atbguitars
Questions arising…
Q: Are vintage guitars really ‘better’?
A: No. Modern guitars aren’t better either.
Q: You couldn’t tell in a blind test though, could you?
A: Maybe, but if your brain is trying to tell, you’re not doing anything relating to actual music.
Q: That’s every guitar gear video ever, isn’t it?
A: Touché. Probably! The bit after the video in the venue or studio is
Q: Did Mick buy that Strat?
A: Not today. But one day when the day is right I will.
Q: Why didn’t you play the //insert any guitar we didn’t play here//?
A: We chose the ones that interested us the most.
We’ll answer everything else we can in Monday’s VCQ.
Enjoy the episode!

19:40-19:47 - Dan is overcome with “the tone” 20:00-20:05 - A sudden urge of irresponsibility overtakes Dan. “I could probably buy this…” he ponders to himself 20:06-20:07- Dan begins to regain his mental faculties. “Well, it wouldn’t hurt to check the price.” 20:08 - Dan reads the price tag. 20:10 - Dan reads the price tag again. 20:12 - Dan reads the price tag again, hopelessly wishing the price has somehow lost a digit. 20:14 - Dan begins to work out what he would have to sell in order to afford “the tone”. 20:19 - “I don’t _need_ a car… I could bicycle to work.” 20:35 - “I bet I could fit my whole family into one of those tiny houses. They’re all the rage nowadays…” 20:46 - Mick stops playing. Dan is suddenly snapped out of his tone coma. 20:53 - “I’m not crying, you’re crying.”

I sat down to watch this with my 8 year old daughter in one of those “father/daughter/let’s learn about the joy of things in life” way. I expected her boredom threshold to be up at the 2 minute mark, but she lasted all the way to Mick’s exclamation of, “Sh*t!” after playing the ‘62. She looked up at me with her divine, soft blue eyes and said simply, “Daddy. I love That Pedal Show”. There was nothing for it, I looked back at her and said, “Yup, sweets. So do I”. What a great episode.

My first semi-religious experience with a guitar was in 1990, when my father took me to a guitar store for the first time, thrilled that I'd finally taken up his instrument. I was 21 years old, and playing in my first band, as a keyboardist picking up guitar. I happened upon a Paul Reed Smith Artist model, which as I recall sold at that time for about $1500 USD, and I, beginning guitarist that I was, felt like the guitar could play itself. It just felt so *comfortable* , and to this day, I've never played a guitar that felt that *easy* to me. My father (who was a physician) offered to buy it for me, but I just couldn't let him spend so much money on me when I was a rank beginner. Instead, I ended up borrowing (eventually permanently borrowing) his 1980-ish Matsumoku-made Epiphone Emperor F, and he bought me an Ampeg VH-140C 2x12 stereo chorus combo amplifier for $650. I was scared of tube amps back then, having heard horror stories of their fragility. When I think of what a 1990 Paul Reed Smith Artist Model would be worth today, I kick myself. My father could have easily afforded it, and it would have given him pride to buy it for me. Although the Ampeg is no longer my main amp, I still have it, and the following year, I purchased myself a new 1990 Rickenbacker 330 for $940 (minus $140 trade-in for the Bundy clarinet my mother gave me because my younger sister no longer played it) which is still my main guitar. My father passed away in 2002, and I ended up selling the Emperor F in 2012 for $650. Over the next few years, the market for Matsumoku Epiphones skyrocketed, much to my dismay. I've seen them listed for $2500 USD.

David and Mike, thank you for allowing me into your fantastic world of guitar and amp heaven with this privileged back stage pass! I learned a lot this morning....so much so, it is brain overload! Thankfully, I can watch this episode over and over(which I surely will do)so my brain can harvest all the gold nuggets of information that was shared both verbally and visually. You Braddahs did an awesome job and Hey Simon! ....THANKS FOR THE EXPERT VIDEOGRAPHY! Mahalo nui loa for sharing your time with us TPS! (not like this one was drudgery to keep up with the next episode, hahahaha) ALOHA BRADDAHS!

The gallery-like presentation of the store and the sums of money involved legitimise this on the surface but underneath it all, it's just a couple of 5 year old boys walking into a toy shop and gawping, isn't it? (I say that as a fellow gawper who immensely enjoyed the vicarious experience of watching it. You guys did a wonderful job of conveying the joy of being there and the pleasure of playing and hearing the instruments - thanks!)

Guys, what an enjoyable show. I always enjoy the TPS field trips! When you both were playing the Les Paul gold tops, the owner was grinning proudly and profusely. What a great collection obviously in great hands. He looks like the Peter Jackson of vintage guitars!

The coolest thing about those teles with that weird wiring is that if you notch the selector between the back and middle positions, you actually do get both pickups.

Before you even mentioned the Magnatone I knew that vibrato right off the bat. Delicious I have a new one and it’s UNBELIEVABLE

Me too! I have it as my wet amp alongside a Supro Thunderbolt as my dry. True Stereo Vibrato is just unforgettable. I played one of the Panoramics and couldnt forget it and went back to purchase after two months of dreaming.

Where and how did I miss this!! Stunning stunning stunning guitar the man said and I repeat. For Dan man its a close call for you between the LP gold-plated, but the jag man is your thing brother. Mic the very first strat you picked the 61 was it or 59, mate it melted in your hands! Price tag I know but what a lolly shop, take me there please by appointment. Damn good show old B and you both played exquisitely well, thank you

The moment Mick hits the "it might be even flutier" notes on the 355 you can understand why blues players used to howl. If my guitar made those sounds I'd howl too. And it sounds great through microphones, compression, the internet, my headphones. What it sounded like in the room must have been angels weeping.

Thank you. Just thank you. What a wonderful video. So much Insight, and beautifully delivered with Mr ATB. What a lesson in Vintage instruments. Your combined silence between playing was the biggest “tell” as to how much you were enjoying the process. Simply the best way to spend close to two hours without a guitar in my hands. Well done you legends. Best regards. A fan. 👌🏼

incredible show and knowledge passed onto all of us. Thank you guys. This shop brings back many wonderful memories of being in the original Guitar Trader, in Red Bank, New Jersey back in the 70's. My close friend Paul Unkert worked there doing the maintainence or identifying the guitars originality. Korina is definitely softer, but beautiful tone none the less. EJ's former owned guitar is so alive. Dilemmas, dilemmas, dilemmas

Fantastic episode, guys. I've watched it three times already. I've seen that Fiesta red on reverb awhile ago. That exact one! I was in awe... Fiestas like that always remind me of Gary Moore and his amazing hendrix tribute performance... Loved this. Thanks for sharing such an experience and thanks to Mike and David too. This was definitely a treat. Cheers

Quite literally a holy grail amongst vintage guitar videos. Thank you Mike and David for letting us experience your collection and to TPS for sensational playing. Your playing sounded grander from what I'm used to and that's not just the guitars. That '63 Korina Strat had me picking my jaw up off the floor..!

Absolutely engrossing video guys probably could have watched a further 2 hours! Inspiration shines through in some of the tastiest playing I've seen from you both... all leading to that pivotal moment for Mick with the '62! What a sound - especially with the fuzz. Please tell me you found the money from somewhere. ;-) Great to hear a bit of 'All Of Me' at the front - such a great track. We need more original material from the two of you in the future. As always - a massive thank you for the quality and informative nature of your shows. Keep up the great content!

Thanks for a great episode. Re through neck construction and the Gibson Firebird. Rickebacker introduced this on the 400 Combo (forerunner of the 600 - 625 & 660 series of Petty /Campbell fame) already in 1956. The 4000 and later 4001 basses famously carries the same through neck, from 1957 and onwards.

Hi guys, I'm so happy for you getting to enjoy all these amazing guitars and thankful for sharing it with us. Thanks also for putting all the energy into making such a spectacular show, it's a true joy to follow your natural conversations without the over-editing or constant cutting most other channels tend to prefer (for reasons I don't get at all). Makes it so much more pleasant and relaxing to watch you and your fine guests. Congrats on 200k subs! Dan, please invite Mike Vennart on the show🙏
