UV-Vis spectroscopy is a technique that complements the structural elucidation of molecules.
A sample in solution is irradiated in UV visible range (wavelengths between 200 and 800 nm). At certain wavelengths, energy changes are produced in molecules that when returning to a resting state emit energy that is detected by the spectrophotometer allowing to identify of a functional group of the compound.
IR spectroscopy is another very useful analytical tool for compounds characterization. When the sample is irradiated at wavelengths between 2.5 and 50 μm (4000 to 200 cm-1) energy absorption is generated from molecules producing some characteristic bands in the spectrum. The infrared spectrum of a compound provides the functional group characterization and a single track between 500 and 1600 cm-1. These “fingerprints” are used to establish the identity or no identity of a compound.
