It is not necessary to visit China in order to try Uyghur cuisine. What is fantastic about Kazakhstan is that you can find all sorts of exotic cuisines, such as Uyghur, Korean, Dunghan, Georgian, Armenian, Russian, Tatar, Balkar, Chechen cuisine in Almaty

In reality, being above the tree line is being anywhere where the temperatures in mid July doesn't reach 10C. So in areas where that condition isn't met, the answer is simply firewood (The Saami, the Nenetes, among many other indiginous, arctic/circumpolar populations). It coincides often with reindeer herding as a main source of sustenance, and is generally on the Eurasian side of the Arctic circle. The tree line is often further into the Arctic. In areas where that condition is met and there are no trees,, the answer was usually animal fat. Tends to often coincide with populations also hunting/fishing and consuming whale and seal, as opposed ot herding reindeer. Whale blubber is both a valuable food source, as well as a valuable fuel source historically. The SHEER enormity of the animal alone ensured that communities are well supplied through winter without the need for overfishing at all. That's more on the North American side of the Arctic, and that includes Greenland. Geography and climate play a role, but all in all, humans there have done the same that humans have done anywhere. Looked around, and found a way to survive.

Not Chinese here, but I have lived in China and even dated a Uyghur girl. Only the extremist religious muslim Uyghurs get taken away to "re-education" camps for "opinion adjustment" that's direct translation BTW. Also, they can't get passports unless it's for education purposes (university abroad). 30 years ago Xinjiang only had a population of 5 million, nowadays it is closer to 25 million, and these people are all ethnic Uyghurs. Once you understand why the people who call what China is doing to Xinjiang a genocide, you will understand why they turn a blind eye to Gaza.

What an odd video. To put it in context this would be like if I went to China and spoke to some guy whose parents were born in Minnesota so I could make a video about the culture of the American Midwest. Very strange... It makes no sense to seek out second+ gen immigrants in Kazakhstan when travel to Xinjiang is freely permitted. Anyone can go there and have a chat with some of the 11 million Uyghurs who still live there. Anyway, you should have asked these Kazakh "Uyghurs" for their opinions on armed separatists, radical Islam, and carving up civilians with machetes. Also, saying you can't go to film people in Xinjiang is undermined by the many hundreds of various travel vloggers from all walks of life on RU-vid who regularly do just that. Not to mention that Uyghurs in China speak Chinese in addition to their language. They pay taxes, they abide by laws. Their education system is dictated by China. They are integrated. There were disputes about the land when China started facilitating migration of Han Chinese people to historically Uyghur province. This led to political protests and tensions. Being a political protester in some countries lands you a title of an extremist. So rn it’s hard to figure out who was actually an extremist and who was simply a protestor with legit concerns.

If he goes to China, and if an Uyghur speaks out anything remotely negative about the Chinese government policies, then that person will be end up in Jail. Therefore, even if Sonny could go to Xinjiang and talk to locals, he would not hear how Uyghur people truly feel, because there is no safe environment to speak freely. In other words, no freedom of speech in China.

The largest Uyghur community is in China. If you wanted to talk to them and see how they live you can just... go there. Plenty of RU-vid travel vloggers do. Pretty weird to try and understand the Uyghur experience from a tiny community of expats...

Uyghur cuisine is one of the most popular in Kazakhstan😋 In general, your co-host is a wonderful and very educated person. I have been following Denis Keen for several years. And he tells and shows in his tours not only the sights that everyone knows about. But he shows how multicultural Kazakhstan is. He has tours of Uyghur regions, Slavic, Dungan and even Afghan and Jewish diasporas in Kazakhstan. He shows architecture, murals, but most importantly, the stories of people, buildings that you just won’t find on the Internet.
Only issue I have with this episode is them calling Dapanji Uyghur Cuisine instead of Chinese Cuisine. It first appeared in Xinjian in the 1980 by a Han chinese chef: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dapanji
From the video, Kurvanjan is a native Kazakh of Uyghur descent that is detached from the Uyghurs of China. He was a Uyghur "activist in his younger years", ie. well before 2018, meaning he was a foreigner advocating for independent Uyghur ethno-state. I assume from the time his parents migrated that they were also separatists that fled after a short lived independence movement during China's civil war. Look up the Urumqi "Riots", judge for yourself whether it's terrorism or not. The history in the video is factually incorrect. Xinjiang was the western frontier of the Silk Road in China that was part of Ancient China since 200 BC. Uyghurs are at most neo-indigenous (half their ancestors migrated) to a tiny part Xinjiang, the Tarim Basim as shown on the map. In the Qing Dynasty, the Uyghurs thrived from being the local allies to genocide the Dzungars.

More recently the Qing Dynasty recaptured Xinjiang in 1758 after eliminating the Dzungars with the help of the Uyghurs. The Uyghurs are only part Turkic and "indigenous" to the Tarim Basim, a small part of S Xinjiang as shown on the map in the video-which makes the notion that they're entitled to Xinjiang more ridiculous. Massive indiscriminate attacks killing mass civilians (including Uyghurs) for political purposes is terrorism. Religion has not been removed, extremists have killed lmams in Xinjiang for not adhering/promoting their extreme interpretation of Islam. Islam has state recognition and protection in China and has been in China since Ancient times.
I am American Chinese. I came to America since I was 24 years old. I was educated in one of best boarding school in Shanghai. I had 2 roommates which were 2 sisters came from xinjiang. These two sisters were Uyghurs and they got all the special treatment from school. It is like black people in America, got all the benefits and still not happy. Because they are the minority. I am not saying China were perfect. They have same problem as all the countries in the world. Recently, one Uyghur friend told me, they don’t like Chinese government, because they were told if they don’t learn mandarin, they can’t get good job . I was wondering, if native Indian in American doesn’t speak English, can he get good job? Why these so call intelligent people only listen to one side story? All they doesn’t care the real truth for their own reasons!

If you are a American Chinese, I'm also from China, then you should know that at least America let the Indians keep pieces of their land and their own nations within the US, along with the special treatments and beneift. No, it's still not right, but American government has repeatedly apologized for the wrong of taking over Indians and killing Indians. That's the main difference I see between China and US. Both were once imperial powers that dominate and colonized, but the US is at least acknowledging the wrongs and is teaching American children why it was wrong, but our Chinese government still to this day insist on justifying why it did no wrong.
