Some gurdys are louder than others. You hear the keys on this one bc it’s not as loud of an instrument as others

Actually, I kinda like the loud keys. They add a sort of percussion accompaniment to the music.

That is a very nice hurdy gurdy. As a former violinist, I have a bit of an aesthetic bias, and finding a hurdy gurdy with that nice fiddle shape is a challenge. Truly a wonderful instrument.

Interestingly this instrament was invented during the medieval period but was originally made for two people to play, one for the keys and one for the wheel

It is a Hurdy Gurdy. A stringed instrument that originated in Europe early A.D. A sort of mechanized violin. It has a rosin wheel that is hand cranked and the wheel acts as a bow against the string(s). The keyboard is used to press wedges of wood against the string(s) at different intervals to make notes. There are also drone strings which gives it that bag pipe sound.

I like the "clack"-noises it makes. So you have automated percussion with your play :P Though it would be nice if one could also manipulate the bordun strings.

Yes, me too, and I was looking for it for years! this was used as about a 20 second introductory piece in the BBC documentary 'The story of Ireland' Part one. The one on the documentary sounds a bit more polished, and seems to have drums from a marching pipe band. Can you tell me where to find that recording??? @@cesariushervelazco8 Yes, its seems strange, but then again, this kind of European folkey stuff can sound similiar. There is something haunting, simple, and archaic in the older tunes.. and as many people say here, because if the drone, the hurdy gurdy sounds like a cross between a fiddle and a bagpipe. Perfect for Scots/Irish music! For example listen to this old irish tune from the 1600-1700s, its very similar to Uzh i ya..... jump to 4:20ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4MxFsk4sYM4.html (its called Liam O Reilly, or Liam O Raghallaigh in Gaelic. The clacking of the keys makes it feel more real to me, like hearing the ticking of an antique clock. It's as if the extraneous noise is proof a human built the instrument and another human played it. The surprise spark of the mortal is so life-affirming, especially from a musical instrument that sounds to me like any acoustic bug became a feature centuries ago.
