Víkingur Ólafsson - Bach: Prelude & Fugue, BWV 855a: 1. Prelude No.10 in B Minor (Transcr. Siloti)
Víkingur Ólafsson is a musical free spirit with a mission. He first made the classical world sit up and listen in early 2017 with his recording of solo piano works by Philip Glass - a fascinating journey through the time and space of their minimalist structures. Glass is now followed by Bach. Ólafsson’s second Deutsche Grammophon album, the pithily entitled Bach, contains a mixture of original works and transcriptions, which the pianist has woven together in intriguing style.
“It would all mean nothing without Bach,” says Ólafsson. “If Glass’s music is minimal, then Bach’s is maximal!” Having studied his music intensively, he here casts new light on some of the composer’s many different faces.

As you mentioned, Mr Olafsson, Bach is a free country. What matters is how sincere, lyrical and skilful the execution of a score. In this respect you are mightily impressive. I see you as the spiritual child of both Glenn Gould and Sviatoslav Richter, although I am aware how cliché that sounds. You seem to connect with the intimate voices of Bach well beyond what other piano players have accustomed us to. Maybe Maria Joao Pires showed (too few times) she too, 'gets' Bach on the piano. I would love to hear you on the harpsichord; you have a touch that would suit it. When played like Gilbert, Pinnock, Ross, Leonhardt and Dantone (the latter on Handel), the same infinite expansion can be heard. I am grateful for your work and I do not believe the small amount I paid for your album on RU-vid is in any way a fair exchange for the emotion I gained from your playing. I can only thank you.

You are extremely gifted on your delivery of amazing melodies on top of melodies. Very romantic. The pianissimo the second time though took my breath away. An extremely soft sound would seem to be a difficult skill to pull off. You are right on the edge of not sounding the note at all. Bravo!

This dude definitely knows how to talk in Bach's! I admire all the pianists who dare Bach's but only few actually find themselves locked in Bach's demand for perfection. I am glad that I see Olafsson is one of those few.

I assume from the wording of your question that you suspect Ólafsson may be using a slightly different score than the usual Siloti score (Bach/Siloti BWV 855a: webzoom.freewebs.com/fjgajewski/Bach-S4-6-06.pdf ). For what my opinion is worth, it sounds (and looks) to me as if Ólafsson is NOT arpeggiating most of the chords and may indeed be using an alternative score. For instance, transcriber Doug Gould (douggould@hotmail.co.uk) offers three tasteful alternatives based on the oft-cited performance of Emil Gilels (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yu06WnXlPCY.html ), two of which do not demand an enormous span. As of April 2021 Doug was still offering his transcriptions for purchase (I purchased one for £8.00). They are nicely demonstrated and discussed by an expert (Paul Barton) here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oKxUyEzyS7M.html.

I love this, but did bach make several versions of this prelude since the melody is left out compared to this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lv3PFv9YCrg.html, or is it just creative freedom?

But the score does not say first chords and then arpeggios in left hand.
@peterchristiandr.med.schus2246
This is a complete rearrangement of the original version BWV 855.....the left-hand theme is transposed to the right, played way too fast for that, the presto part was almost preferred, this part was completely left out....
