Overclocked v12 solenoid engine running on 35 volts, instead of its normal 24 - this makes a big difference to its speed and power. More solenoid engines on my channel. Subscribe for future engine videos!
Technical details:
Type: 60 degree V12 electric piston engine
Maximum RPM: 3,200 RPM
Input voltage: 24 volts dc
Speed controller: Mechanical PWM
Cylinder bore diameter: 8mm
Piston stroke length: 10mm

Main bearing size: 4x9x4 mm (684zz)
Big end bearing size: 4x9x4 mm (684zz)
Flywheel mass: 900g
Switching transistors: 2N3055
Solenoid model: SOLEN 121E16530 (with built in flyback diode)
Total mass of engine: 6kg approximately
Exhaust emissions: zero
More information:
A solenoid engine uses the magnetic pull of solenoids to turn a crankshaft, and resembles the architecture of an internal combustion engine. The crankshaft on this engine is made up of one hundred and forty individual parts bolted together, and is fully counterweighted to balance the rotational mass. The flywheel is an old drill / lathe chuck of some sort (army surplus), the engine has a tachometer pulse generator on the rear of the timing / distributor shaft to run the red LED tachometer, it uses Meccano timing chain and sprockets, and has a key ignition switch for added style. This engine can run both as a four stroke or as a two stroke, and can switch while running. This engine does not develop much torque, certainly much less torque than a standard rotary electric motor can produce, for the equivalent power input - for this reason the solenoid engine is just a novelty and an educational model.
I built this engine for fun, from mainly scrap metal and wood, and using mostly hand tools, and a basic drill press, during autumn 2014. It is based on a single cylinder prototype I had previously made here: • FAST Solenoid Engine W...

how are those wires on the side increasing the speed?
@Mr11colek
@Mr11colek 7 лет назад
The rods you see driving the crank shaft are called solenoids, when current is passed through those boxes at the top which are coils of wire, the rods snap into position inside the coil due to magnetism. When there is no current the rods are not attracted to the coil so they can retract. I am only familiar with the solenoids he must have a complicated patern and all kinds of relays controlling it I have no idea how that works
@daemn42

Elit, Cole, Look at the spiral pattern of the copper trace on the shaft to the lower right. One brush per solenoid completes the circuit to activate the solenoid as the copper trace rotates underneath it. The spiral pattern ensures that only one solenoid is activated at a time (although there may be some overlap). It's the equivalent of firing the spark in an internal combustion engine. Sliding all the brushes to the right, advances the timing (triggering each solenoid a little sooner in the stroke) which causes it to speed up.

I think this is truly an amazing build, especially when you consider the basic components used for the crank - 'off the shelf' bolts are not exactly high tolerance parts, yet you still made it work. I've built a single solenoid and now I'm currently designing a V8 inspired, I have to admit, by your own V8. Having a lathe and mill I suppose my build is easy compared to your own. (Your speed control is novel and worthy of a Nobel prize by the way - I chickened out with my single and used PWM)
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 8 лет назад
Thanks for your comment, follytowers. I will admit that I didn't really know if the crankshaft in this engine would work until I tried it, and I'm still surprised that it works so well. The secret to the crankshaft is the serrated flanged nuts that hold the threaded bar sections absolutely perpendicular to the aluminium sections, and keep the whole assembly true. Your upcoming build sounds very interesting though - I'm not sure I would call it easy just because you've got a lathe and a mill, there must be a whole other set of considerations to think of, like, what kind of bearings to use on the crankshaft? Will you be publishing the finished engine on youtube?

A higher rpm could be attained if you gave the crank the correct throw sequence. Only a Inline 3,5,v6,or,v10 has a throw sequence of one eng to another. V12s V8s and V16s start from the middle and work their way out. V12s have a crank throw every 120 degrees. The middle four cylinders spin together. The next two on either side are 120 degrees behind and the last two are another 120 degrees. Thought this might help!

This is fantastic. Subscribed and liked man because you deserve this. My curiosity is, how did you make the "ignition timing" so-to-speak for this? Because if you have two solenoids firing against each other it will not work. And if you just dont fire two solenoids at once, how did you make the crankshaft work so well? Because Ive watched the construction video and I dont seem to see any kind of adjustments made to the crankshaft? They look random to me.
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 7 лет назад
Hi, thanks for subscribing. The design and geometry is 100% conventional for a 60 degree v12, the crankshaft has three geometrically aligned pairs of crankpins, set 120 degrees apart from each other, and the timing is set to fire a solenoid every 60 degrees of crank rotation when running as a four stroke. It can also be switched to run as a two stroke by combining the trigger circuits of the six geometrically aligned pairs of solenoids. Cheers.

I have a question, have you determined the time it takes to a solenoid for a full dispacement from the moment you apply current to it? Because that is theoretically speaking the maximun length of pulse you should use. Right? Pulses longer than this to a solenoid should cause resistance to the rotation at least for a very very short time.

The solenoids switch off before the armature returns outwards so there is no resistance. The position of each solenoid is mechanically tied to the switch mechanism.

Hi Devid, it's a great thing that you can create it, I want to create something like that, but I don't have the equipment to do it, I need it for an experiment you can sell. is it back for me?

how much power can that thing produce and if you upscale that do you think you could power a can and run a large alternator off of it so it powers itself. be a fueless car amd it would charge and run itself

Sadly it's very inefficient compared to a conventional electric motor.

I have a question. I am a electronics dummy. do you have the same circuitry as the upgraded single cylinder in this one? and are you running a 35v supply into the 1k resistor and then to the 2n3055 transistor then to solenoid? and if so, how many amps at 35v are coming from power supply? do you use any heat sink?
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 7 лет назад
Hi, yes this v12 uses exactly the same circuitry as my single solenoid engine, apart from I used a ceramic resistor of a higher value (can't remember the value) to supply the base current for 12x 2n3055. Running this engine on 35 volts is a risk, as it is designed to run on no more than 24 volts. No heatsink is needed when running on the proper voltage. I think it pulls about 5 or 6 amps from the psu when running full throttle on 35v.

OK, I have been trying to build single cylinder using your way of speed control but I had everything wired straight from power source(no resistor or transistor) and using a 12v solenoid. I take it your circuitry will also work with a 12v source? I was having problems with arcing and inconsistency of speed controller. I also have problem of tape bleeding over into contact area after a few runs. So maybe your circuitry will help that. However I don't come near your rpms...lol. I noticed also that friction plays big part as far as pressure of the wire riding the copper pipe....I wonder if there is a way to use some kind of laser switch for timing that would eliminate those problems
@davidrobert2007

If you use a 2n3055 (for instance) transistor, then you only have to switch the base current, and this will prevent the sparking and heating up of the rotary switch and make it much more reliable. There are many ways to switch these (reed switch, hall sensor, LED / LDR etc), or you can use Arduino - but I prefer a mechanical switch as it gives a pretty simple and effective speed control.

Out of curiosity, what kind of power supply do you use as far as max voltage and amps? Especially with the 35v 12 cylinder?
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 7 лет назад
I use either an old laptop power supply, that outputs about 21v and 4A, or a small sealed lead acid battery. To get the voltage up to 35v I used an ebay dc-dc boost converter.

Anyone thought about building one of these based on a motorcycle engine? One side of the crank shaft spins the stator which connects to the rectifier and battery to potentially run itself then the other end of the crank shaft have some gears and fly wheel connected to a generator. Would that work?

damn, this is cool! does it have any practical output? like could it be used as a real engine(if scaled)
@davidrobert2007

Sadly this engine produces very little torque so wouldn't be suitable in place of a real, internal combustion engine. The biggest benefit that IC engines have is the sheer amount of energy that is stored in a relatively small fuel tank. Thanks for commenting.

Is it imitating a 4 stroke or is it just the camera making it look like the cam is turning half speed?
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 8 лет назад
The "camshaft" is turning at half crank speed which allows 4 stroke operation, but there is a switch to connect the trigger circuits of the six geometrically aligned pairs, which allows it to run as a 2 stroke, as it is here. Thanks for commenting.

If I make such an engine, only instead of being V12, but a W24 can I move a car? (Car of 1 person only, having the lowest possible weight)
@shapshooter7769
@shapshooter7769 7 лет назад
This engine is only rated for 175 W. Using a conventional rotary motor would give you more torque than this engine for the same amount of power.
@fillipibarros7624
@fillipibarros7624 7 лет назад
dagambler999 Actually an engine of that size would be too big. Easier a combustion even.
@davidrobert2007
@davidrobert2007 7 лет назад
It would move a car, but you would have to gear it down so much it would barely move. A conventional electric motor would produce far more torque for the same power input.
