In the fifties when I was a kid my neighbor who was a pro auto mechanic had one of these in pretty rough shape which he gifted to me and I soon learned to turn a wrench and get it going with a little help from my benefactor and I ran it up and down the gravel road in front of our house ...great fun !
I had a model 54 with the 2 speed transmission in 1959. I traded my 1957 Western Auto Deluxe bike for it and $20. It was a great tough little scooter. I sold it to a friend when I bought my first car in 1963.
A classmate in high school had one. He and I were going to fly model airplanes, but first he had to deliver the afternoon newspapers. I rode on the back of a series 50 while he drove and tossed folded papers on Saint Simons Island in the late 1950's. Another classmate had one of those also. They were very cool, dependable, and probably economical to own. But I would never take one on an Atlanta highway. Probably would be illegal to do so anyway. Even major streets are not safe.
