V6E12: There's Something About Big Bend

This week kicks off with a day-trip to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, where I explore New Mexico's stunning subterranean landscape. Then, I venture south into Texas to experience Big Bend Ranch State Park, both by Jeep and on foot. After experimenting with various foods at camp, I make my way Terlingua for a proper burrito.

Yes, there is something special about BB. There is a quiet elegant beauty about it. It feels special and you don't know why. It's different from the enchanting feeling of the NM desert. Big Bend has then zen like peaceful energy. Thanks for sharing your adventures!

One of the most likable Jeepers on RU-vid, no doubt. I just took mine out to Big Bend during spring break (had a little better luck with weather) and there's so much to see and explore. A quick note, though, from this Texas History teacher: It's just called the "Rio Grande". "Rio Grande River" essentially translates to "Big River River".

Thaks for the wonderful video. I grew up in SW N.M. and have been to Carelsbad Caverns six times in my life. I have never been to Big Bend yet but its on my list. I have been all over New Mexico and there is so much to see. I have a 2007 jeep jku and it has 263,000 miles. My son and I did a loop in SW New Mexico. We hit the Gila Wilderness, Valley of Fires, Three Rivers petrogliffs White Sands NM, City of the Rocks and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I tyr to never miss an adventure.

We just got back from Big Bend National Park and spent 3 nights primitive camping in the backcountry. We drove 50+ miles on 4WD roads from east to west on the River Road in the southern part of the park. It was great scenery and fun driving. Lots of things to explore - old mines, old ranches, hiking. You can camp for up to 14 days by getting a $12 backcountry permit, no other fees. Sites are assigned when you get your permit at the backcountry office at the Ranger Station.

Also, since you have a boat, consider a “boomerang” trip into Santa Elena Canyon. Paddle upriver about 5 miles, check out Fern Canyon on the Mexican side, and then return back to the mouth. It’s an awesome place. As long as the flow is not too high, it’s an easy paddle up stream. No rapids to speak of.

Years ago I’d planed a trip to the Big Bend region. Plans changed in route, wound up in Palo Duro Canyon, Las Vegas NM, Santa Fe NM, and a night at Earth Ship (100% off grid housing) north of Taos NM. 2000 miles of unplanned traveling in ten days before heading back to Dallas where I’d lived at the time. I love traveling.

I love the video, but I was hoping that you showed your viewers the amazing Guadalupe Mountains National Park. You drove through it in your video. It is not to be missed. The highest peaks in Texas are there, and it is a wilderness park, meaning that it has minimal intrusion by humans. I have been just about everywhere out west, and I put the Chihuahuan Desert portion of the United States (and northern Mexico)to be one of,if not the most, spectacular region on the continent.

Chris, excellent video! Your episodes bring this calm feeling over me every time I watch them. The production value is on par with a major motion picture. The video shots also remind of an old CBS News anchor by the name of Charles Kuralt. He had a soothing similar format for his Sunday Morning show. Big Bend, Texas is beautiful. You didn't mention all the stars you could see at night. Anyway, keep up the good work. Let me know when you're in San Antonio, Texas. I'll take ya out to some good pizza. :)

We have explored much of the southwest and some of the same places you have gone to. Love the fact that you don't use some crappy music that only you like and instead capture the sounds of nature and quiet. Here's a tip on staying cool while desert hiking; WHITE long sleeve cotton shirt, canvas wide brimmed hat, at least 1 bandanna around your neck. dunk or splash water on all of these BEFORE you head out and if there are pot holes of water or seeps you can re-soak said items during your hike. Check out my vids on using a simple fire pan to leave no trace.

hey Chris, have you considered setting up an Amazon store? It would be an easy way for people to find the stuff you use that has worked well in a full-time travel environment, and make you a little extra money in the process without costing people anything. Things like the BihlerFlex Bungees, RAM Mounts, the much-lauded multi-purpose toilet/table, camera equipment, computer accessories/drives, and cooking equipment would all be candidates for a store. I personally plan to purchase the BihlerFlex Bungees based off of seeing them on your channel, and would gladly use a link that helped support the creation of more content if one was available.

Loved your video. You do a great job editing them. I have not been to Big Bend, Texas but I need to go there since I live here in Texas. This is a good time of the year to go because it sure would be hot during the summer. The shots of the rams coming out of the cave were very interesting. You didn't let us know what the story was with the rider less horses. So how many miles do you have on your Jeep now 130,000? What is your long term plan for your next vehicle? Thanks for taking us with you

LOL Seriously though, you really should try to eat better food than spam spaghetti...he didn't even heat up the sauce...OH ! If you buy a pack of chicken breasts and cook it all you will have cooked chicken ready for a cold chicken sandwich or quick fajitas on the scottle with some sliced red and yellow peppers or add some to soup or noodles etc...I buy Kraft sandwich spread for sandwiches and burgers. It's mayo with relish, mustard, minced garlic, onion, pimento and seasonings in it. Good stuff. And the plastic jar it comes in doesn't take up much room either. Take Care Chris !
