Bedroom Volumes, Searching for an Amplifier that can Give 'Valve Crunch' Tones at low Volume - Enter The Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 Combo. A Pretty Little Amp That Packs a Punch!
In this Video 7 - I am on the search to find a valve amplifier that can give that classic valve crunch overdrive sound at bedroom volumes and at the time of my search I found this was not that easy to find. After much searching... I came across The Blackstar Studio 10 Series 6L6 model which appears to fit perfectly for both practising and recording at manageable volumes. As a guitar player from the 1970's having to play through Marshall stacks at high volume to get that creamy overdrive tone, the challenge is trying to find a small amplifier that can replicate that without blowing your eardrums off!
There have been many advances in technology and there is an never ending supply of product claiming to give those sought-after overdrive tones whether via amplifiers, pedals and even software but as with most 'guitar' related journey's - it's very much down to personal tastes. In future videos I will continue my hunt for tone and another amplifier that will get my attention will be the American Bad Cat series II range. Check-out my 'Unboxing' video playlist... Enjoy!

I have this amp. Got it before the name change when it was the Blackstar 10th Anniversary line. It's my main amp at home and I gig it in small pubs several times per year. To date, (5 years) no problems at all. The digital reverb is pretty good but like Stu, I don't use the built in distortion. I finally got the emulated output to perform to my liking by running it thru a DI box then into our PA mixer. May pick up the EL84 version for comparison and to keep at our rehearsal space. Very happy with it's performance and value.

Hi Jerry - Thanks for chipping in and really helpful to hear from someone who has had the amp for a good amount of time and uses it for live work. I sold off a number of Fender amps recently but kept the little Blackstar because it's just such a great little combo to hold onto and I also have had no issues with it to date. If you get a moment Jerry, check-out my review on the Bad Cat Black Cat which has EL84 Tubes. A good deal more expensive, weighs a ton but what a beautiful tone - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sF_IjK0kmto.html - Regards: Stu

Thanks for this! Your sound demos and your comments were equally clear and useful. I really appreciate the range and detail of your comment; this is exactly the sort of info I have been looking for in order to decide whether to hit the "buy" button. And I'm with you on the problem with the aggressive volume pot tapers on all these small combos. I've heard that Fender has improved the master volume on the latest Fender Hot Rod Deluxe; hopefully this starts a trend. Cheers.

Hi SuddenSoundStudios - Thank you for chipping in and the kind comments, much appreciated. Always good to hear if a video review has been helpful or not. In my other reviews (as I searched for that elusive tone we all seek) I did do another review putting the little Blackstar alongside a Fender Junior (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UDUTHV0Fn6U.html) which in turn was traded-in for a Bad Cat Black Cat (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sF_IjK0kmto.html). I have now settled on the Bad Cat and the Blackstar for my studio recording needs. To date, I have had no issues with the Blackstar and enjoy its ability to make all the guitars I have sound good. All the best with whatever you end up getting, and please do let me (others) in on what you get and your own thoughts. Regards: Stu

Thanks for the comment. Like yourself, I'm really pleased with this little combo, very versatile and controllable at lower volumes. Do you use this within a performing band...? it would be good to hear how it manages in a live setting. Regards: Stu

@@StuGuitarChannel I haven't used it in a live setting. I have had it turned up full volume and it's quite loud for a 10 watt amp.

I have the exact same model. Cons: It came with a broken out chassis, cracked cabinet and broken power tube due to insufficient protection packaging. Very pure cabinet design - definitely not made for gigging (as the name suggests). The chassis broke out with the glued chipboard part from the cabinet. The amp was beside the broken tube unharmed. It was an easy repair and I got a compensation payback, so it costed 100 euros at the end. 😊. The Preamp section is nothing to write about. Too much treble for most guitars. Interestingly the effects loop only works if you plug a jack into the front end. The integrated celestion seventy80 is probably the worst speaker celestion ever made. I swapped mine out for a celestion g12h30 anniversary and plan to test it with a vintage g12-65 as it has less treble. Pros: very good powerend for multieffect pedals. It sounds way better with any amp model from my old digitech rp360 through the loop return as with the analog preamp on board. I just plugged an unsoldered jack plug into the input to turn the amp on. The reverb on the amp still works in this scenario. The biggest pro is that the analog speaker simulation sounds pretty good and dynamic as this is AFTER the power tube.

Thanks for your comments laszlobota9626, much appreciated. That's a real shame about the condition your amp arrived in... good you were able to fix it and get a good deal on it. I can't say I have any issues with the tone (regarding too much treble) regardless of what guitar types I use... could there be something amiss with the circuitry considering the damage done to your amp? (just a thought) Not sure if I've picked you up correctly regarding the effects loop, mine works okay - jack in / out on rear panel... not that I actually use it but I did test it to make sure it worked. I think for the money it's a nice little amp to use in a studio type environment for a particular tone but not something I would personally use to gig with. It would be interesting to hear how you get on with the vintage g12-65... I suppose for me, the amp is not worth tinkering with but it's always interesting to hear what others get up to.... regards: Stu

@@StuGuitarChannel The loop works in the traditional way as it supposed to. But if you want to use a preamp pedal or multieffect pedal hooked up to the power stage =into loop return, with the blackstar preamp bypassed, the amp will be muted. There must be a bypass switch integrated into the amp input. Regarding to treble: I tried two different 6l6 and multiple 12ax7 tubes, all my guitars and also two different 212 cabs with the same results. My main guitar with lace alumitone humbucker has very little trebel and still I had to back off the tone to almost nothing on the amp. The power amp alone with multieffect pedals sounds good balanced, I assume it's the preamp design. Interestingly the power end works even without a preamp tube in the circuit. Is that another blackstar solidstate-vacuum tube hybrid thing? I'll definitely report back on the vintage g12-65 in the open cab. Already tried them in a closed back 212 with the blackstar and I have never heard a better speaker in my life. I have a new g12 65 as well, but it needs some hours on it to loose some top end.

@@Lack0 Ahh... As I don't use the effects loop I was unaware of that. Interesting about the treble, can't say I have any issue with that although just out of interest, I have lost a fair bit of high end frequencies in my hearing... too many years standing close to Marshall Stacks full blast... ;-) When I worked in TV/Film production I would use meters in the edit studio to check frequencies as I could not trust my hearing. Back when I played in the 70s we occasionally tried different speakers in the cabinets and it was interesting to hear the differences that could make. It would be good to hear a side-by-side comparison with what you are doing. As I've just come back to playing and recording again, I'm still to find the amplifier set-up that I feel at one with.... part of the fun of the journey... regards: Stu

Thanks for the comment... I don't think you would be disappointed, the Tone control gives a good amount of variation to suit all types of pick-ups. The Gain control goes from total clean right through various stages of valve like crunch. For those that li9ke a lot of distortion there is the booster switch. Should you get one do post your thoughts on using it. PS: I did a more recent look at this combo up against a Fender Blues Jnr, and I am reviewing a number of Stratocasters using this combo amp in recent videos. Regards: Stu

Hi Alex - I see that Blackstar are still making them and I saw a few used ones on eBay and Reverb. To my ears, the tone adjustment control (apparently has some digital trickery going on) does give the amp a more mellow tone if desired. Regards: Stu

I have one and it is great. Not really designed as a two channel amp for live but gives those tone options for the studio where switching sounds on the fly is not usually required. Don't know how you managed to talk so long next to yours without playing; mine gives me a little psychic nudge in such situations.
