V7E18: On the Outskirts of an Ancient Crater

This week, I cross into Quebec, Canada, where I travel down highway 398 from Labrador. I experience the shore of Lake Manicouagan, wander high into the the Uapishka Mountains, and then explore a lesser known route to the northern shore. I'm befuddled by unexpected art, enchanted by a new language, and a heavy snowfall gives way to a serene landscape.

Fall is my favorite time for camping, a little bite in the air maybe a trace of snow. The beautiful fall colors , you just have to be prepared for the weather. And the best part, a lot less bugs. I really like your adventurous spirit.

You nailed it, IF you prepare and bring the proper things to actually be comfortable in that environment it can be so enjoyable and even top summer camping. I for many years thought hiking and camping outside of summer was just crazy and unpleasant or something but then I realized the few times I or the people in my life had tried it, we hadn't truly brought the gear for it. It is great when you do

Really nice to see our backyard through your eyes Mr.Shontz. 👌🏻 On your way down you missed the Manic 2 dam. It’s really something to see, if you’re still in Baie Comeau take the drive you wont regret it. If you choose to still go down stop in Tadoussac to see a huge rock face fjord after stop in Charlevoix, try to find the Park des Hautes Gorges de la rivière Malbaie, the trail is named: Acropole des Draveurs. There’s an epic but challenging hike you can do there. The sightseeing on the top is just amazing. It’s a national park so it’s going to cost a little money but well worth it. Keep on, keeping on and venture forward. 🤙🏻 DM me if you swing by Montreal or the surroundings. I’ll be happy to show you around. Have a great one.

Amazing is really the only word that can describe the scenery in this weeks episode. Your photography and cinematography skills are really at a professional level. The fact that you photograph and edit it all by yourself makes the published work that much more impressive. I can understand when you say "bittersweet" about leaving the wilderness. The sheer natural beauty of that environment makes you want to just stay and immerse yourself in what no man can ever hope to duplicate. Safe travels and, as always, already looking forward to next week's episode.

Wow, hopefully you see this message because man, you are one hell of a human! You have been on this adventure for 2 years now to focus on yourself and your own ambitions. Seeing you grow over these years is fantastic. I live in the UK so we have mainland Europe on our doorstep to explore but my god, America and Canada is so damn beautiful! From working in small films, I can certainly appreciate the amount of effort it takes you to put together these videos considering you have a weeks worth of footage from multiple sources condensed into 30 minutes of video per week! Your cinematography is on point, having to set up cameras to walk and drive past (and then going back to retrieve it again!), no over the top music, not a lot of talking, just genuine chat. The right balance of eating and finding places to camp vs general walking and driving around, coverage of the iPad apps you use and finding trails. I really feel like you have taken us on the trip with you, you are not alone, we are right there with you to explore the wild outdoors and I wholly believe that you should have many more subscribers than you do right now. Ps, a quick question: On your very first video, you have just over 60k miles on the odometer.. I'm curious to know/ see what you have now? Also, what made you choose having a hole in the roof of your Jeep to access the tent rather than having a separate roof tent? Also, a few times now I have seen the Gaia Maps give incorrect information. Is this based on users reporting it wrong or not enough people are going up on these trails for the app to update and alert that a road is now closed? Like until you arrive, then you have to make the note that a road has now been blocked off/ deemed unsafe? Sorry I'm adding more questions as I go! All the best and I can't wait for more content!

I have to say that as a French speaking person, you do a very decent job pronouncing all of these French names while you’ve been in the Quebec Provenance of Canada. I’m not just saying that because of any bias reasons. For me personally I find the Quebec Provenance to be absolutely beautiful! Quebec City is so historical beautiful and one of the things that makes It so awesome is that it’s the only walled in City in North America. When they built Quebec they definitely took a cue from Medieval Europe and built a wall around the original historic section of the city and of course the center of that part of town sits the amazing Château Frontenac. Quebec is also the only place in North America that has a fully functional Castle. What’s so cool about the Château is that they converted it into an elegant boutique full service hotel. They retrofitted the basement dungeon into a line of shops and cafes. Unfortunately the hotel is quite expensive but it’s definitely worth checking out just for its historical value alone. When you’re in the Quebec Provenance, you definitely feel like you are in Europe. The French language and culture runs very deep in that part of Canada but the good news is that almost all of the locals speak English even though they would have you believe otherwise. The food is absolutely phenomenal there as well. Even though Chris was just recently there, I know he ate very well while he stayed in town. I think Chris should make another expanded expedition to Canada at some point during the new year. Outside of the Bullsh*t Politics, Canada is a super fun and very beautiful country!

Just finding this series now. I'm from Halifax and have travelled by motorcycle 5 times to NL and 3 of those times to Lab. Camping the whole time. My first Trans Labrador trip had 1000kms of dirt and it was amazing. Now it's mostly all paved. :( I didn't have time to do all the dirt roads you found but still managed to see some wonderful sights. The only French word you need to know is Tabernac! ;) Looking forward to the rest of the series.

We are small scale adventurers and take great pleasure in seeing all your roving. Keep it up and your endorsements actually do work for what I believe are some of your sponsors, I hope. There's no monthly fee for the data it provides. It has lots of trail data that one can utilize in the backcountry; with a super long battery life. It's marketed as a sport watch but whatever. Would seem useful for someone like yourself.
